John Franklynnn Carnahan is not the son of Andrew Carnahan--this is the confusion, John and Sarah Dickey Carnahan belong to James Carnahan who drown in the river- will find material and send copy if you would like one. Bob Carnahan

Hi Bob and Norman,
I descend from Andrew through his son Hugh. I have sort of stayed away from working on John because it was always so confusing. Do you suppose if everyone puts what they have together we could figure out these two John Carnahans???

I have seen a report of a 1857 document of the estate of Andrew where it lists these folks:
John W. Conley, executor of Andrew Carnahan vs James Carnahan, Sarah Carnahan, Elizabeth Carnahan, Abraham Carnahan, John Carnahan, J. Carnahan, Nancy Carnahan, James Carnahan Jr. Hiram Carnahan, Mary Carnahan, John carnahan, William Yourie, Francis Yourie, andrew Yourie, Adeline Yourie, James Yourie, David Yourie, William Yourie Jr., Joseph Yourie, Thomas Yourie, Isabella Yourie, Philander Alexander Yourie, Martha Yourie, P. Yourie, Finis Yourie, Ewen Yourie, and Thomas Carnahan.

Taken in order these folks are possibly:
James Carnahan - son of Andrew
Sarah Carnahan - 2nd wife of Andrew
Elizabeth Carnahan - wd of Hugh Carnahan, s/o Andrew
Abraham Carnahan - not sure who this is
John Carnahan - son of Andrew
J. Carnahan - not sure who this is
Nancy Carnahan, James Carnahan Jr. Hiram Carnahan, Mary Carnahan, John Carnahan - These folks appear to be children of Hugh Carnahan but some are missing.
William Yourie, Francis Yourie, andrew Yourie, Adeline Yourie, James Yourie, David Yourie, William Yourie Jr., Joseph Yourie, Thomas Yourie, Isabella Yourie, Philander Alexander Yourie, Martha Yourie, P. Yourie, Finis Yourie, Ewen Yourie - Andrew's daug. Mary md William Youree. This list would appear to be her husband and children although the list of names doesn't exactly match the list that Youree researchers have
Thomas Carnahan - son of Andrew

Another way to look at this list is:
James Carnahan - son of Andrew
Sarah Carnahan - 2nd wife of Andrew
Elizabeth Carnahan, Abraham Carnahan, John Carnahan, J. Carnahan, Nancy Carnahan, James Carnahan Jr. Hiram Carnahan, Mary Carnahan - If this section of the list represents descendants of Hugh then... it would represent a more complete listing of Hugh's children. Abraham could be the male listed in the 1820 census but missing in the 1830 census and the J. Carnahan could be Jane.
John carnahan - son of Andrew
William Yourie, Francis Yourie, andrew Yourie, Adeline Yourie, James Yourie, David Yourie, William Yourie Jr., Joseph Yourie, Thomas Yourie, Isabella Yourie, Philander Alexander Yourie, Martha Yourie, P. Yourie, Finis Yourie, Ewen Yourie - Descendants of Mary Carnahan & William Youree
Thomas Carnahan - s/o Andrew

I guess one of my first questions would be - what links one of the John Carnahan's with Andrew?

And... is anyone besides me interested in moving this discussion to the Carnahan mail list???

Thanks and take care - Emma

I certainly do not plan to get into another discussion of which John is which. I've been through that for 35 years. Some very good researchers have come to the same conclusion but I will say that as far as I am personally am concerned, the John Carnahan buried in Mt. Zion cemetery in Warrick county, In., has a middle name of Franklin, and he is the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Billingsley and a grandson of Hugh.
Hugh Carnahan md. Mary Finley. the had four children.Andrew,Sarah,John and Mary. The son John was the Rev. John Carnahan who moved to Arkansas. He married Janet Billingsley.(-Elizabeth Billingsley's sister.)
Some years ago, Mel Murry, a Carnahan researcher, while researching the Rev. John Carnahan, discovered some data in No. Alalbama showing this John Carnahan and using Franklin as his middle name. He had a son named James Porter Carnahan and later this James Porter Carnahan moved to Warrick county Indiana and later moved his father and mother John and Sarah there also.

Yes, I have the same information, sad but true, Andrews military papers are missing from the archives and his first wife died, he remarried and the tree got all messed up, even in the history books--does your John have a son David? I have read about your John, have papers on him, each Carnahan generation had at least one preacher in it. What ship /port did your Hugh Carnahan arrive in? From Antrim Ireland possibable? How far back do you go? Bob C.

Yes, I would like to discuss this confusion from a point of view that two Johns could not live so far apart as to be confused in the history books, they did not have rapid transportation but they did migrate. So lets look at the naming point-First son after the father , first daughter after the mother, on and on and on, naming there children after there ancesters--my point is my branch has unusual names, like Ferguson, Aaron, I,m talking about the late 1700,s early 1800,s I,ve traced down some very unusual stories and I have one for the John Carnahan in Indiana. While we are at it has anyone located a Albert Carnahan, b 1798 in MacDonough Co. lived in Galesburg untill 1800 then vanished with his mother, Edwina Gilworth Carnahan? I,ll dig out my notes. Andrew Carnahan died at his daughters, Mary Carnahan Youree--buryed on the farm, only grave there. Bob Carnahan

No, I,m not from Tenn. I represent the Illinois branch of Carnahan,s --Aaron Carnahan settled in Ohio and his son James Harvey Carnahan moved to Illinois to farm, my middle name was given to me by my father after his fathers grandfather--Robert Harvey Carnahan. So Bob Carnahan, Benjamine Carnahan, Charles Walter Carnahan, Benjamine Carnahan, James Harvey Carnahan, John Aaron Carnahan. Illinois to Ohio! Bob C.

There is a Bob Carnahan in Mt. Juliot, Tn. that knows more about Carnahans than anyone--Salt Lake included. I worked with him for several years and about a year ago my computor crashed and I lost all my contacts. I had some of my data on floppys and have had some problems getting it back up so I just gave up. Two years ago I compliled my data into a book for my family, and I just quit looking. There is also a lady in Georgia that searches Carnahan lines--Sandi Benham.
I did do some stuff on your John Aaron Carnahan some years ago when I was trying to prove that he was not my guy. As far as I was ever able to find out--John Aaron never spent anytime in Indiana. Most of his life was in Ohio as I remember.

Yes, I agree, I got side tracked trying to prove my John Aaron Carnahan and when I did, no one wanted to change there research even though it did not work for a tree-they/them/she said it was so long ago, who can tell--very discouraging if your serious about your research. Port of entry is very important as to who came over when and from where. Does your Bob Carnahan have that information? Bob C.
