My tree goes back to circa 1580 with Robert and Florence Wotton, they were in Modbury. Other places were Ilsington, Alphington, Newton St Cyres, Down St Mary, and Exeter. I would love to here from any one connected or possibly connected.
Regards, Fred

The name and place suggests that their must be a connection. My Hampden had a son Hampden but his birth is 1826 and the other details don't fit. The rest of Hampden's male children were born around the time of the Hampden you are looking at. It is possible that he was the son of one of my Hampden's brothers, either John or Algernon. This would make the birth date appropriate. I don't have information on their families but will look in more detail at some information. I will keep looking.
Peter

Do you think this is any relation to your Hampden? any info would be appreciated

That is excellent news. I came across a web page written by Robert O'Connor from Christchurch NZ. He detailed Frederick Cyril Heald Unwin and his wife. I picked up on this becuase I have Fred in my family tree and new that his father had moved to Devon. The really interesting thing is that Hannah Schofield, as mentioned in the last message, had an older brother Henry that had emmigrated in 1873. I am in contact with that family, also living in Christchurch, but not until today did I know that another branch of the tree had emigrated. You should check out the Robert O'Conner stuff.

Thanks, Matt

Hi,
I am trying to connect a Ethel Mary Symms who it is thought was the daughter of Thomas Edward Wotton of Devon. Ethel Mary married a Frederick Cyril Heald Unwin and around 1930 emmigrated to New Zealand. Once there they had at least one duaghter called Kathleen Mary Unwin. Fred Unwin was born in 1900 in Sheffield. His grand mother was Hannah Schofield, also born in Sheffield.

The SA connection is a valid one; my second great grandfather James John Wotton [b 23 April 1874] and his father James John Wootton (name was shortened) [b 23 December 1848] were both born in SA. James John Jnr was born in Currency Creek, SA. This is where they originally emigrated to – their ship [Resource] arrived 1839.

I have JJ Snr’s parents as John Wootton and Susan Giles.

Now to NSW – JJ Jnr married Annie Jane Cochrane (my second great grandmother) 1898 at Walgett, NSW. They later moved to Toowoomba, QLD, & actually all over the place. More detail at my website, including their kids names.

Is there a link? Our Woottons/Wottons could be cousins if not from same line.

Visit our family history website at http://www.whiba.com

I see from your reply to Sandra, that you must have quite a few Wottons in your database. My interest is John Wotton (b1822 Poughill). As far as I know he married a Sally Hookway in early 1850, they subsequently had 4 children (that I know about), Edward, Henery, John & William. My question is this, is this a family that appears in your database? If so I would love to hear from you, otherwise good luck with your own research and I hope you find the link you are looking for.
Regards, Karen

Hello Sandra,
I do have lots of info on the Wotton family but unfortunately no Anna, nor do I have any George Potter. I would suggest you attempt to get the marriage certificate of George and Anna, this would give you the name of her father.

It is worth you noting that there were several Wotton families in Devon with no obvious connections. I shall have a look through my mountain of papers on this family to see if by any chance I have missed the names you are looking for, but I am not hopeful of success. will let you know of any finds.

Regards

Fred

With the risk of digging myself deeper into a confusing hole, do you have any information on her family? She married George Potter in Newton Abbot in 1866. Thanks in advance.
