Lee -- Your e-mail did not work. I am starting to research the Asa Works family so I can use him as a supplement for the Daughters of the American Revolution. I descend from Miriam Angeline Works who was married to Brigham Young. His first daughter, Elizabeth, married Edmund Lovell Ellsworth.

I would appreciate any help in finding some concrete information tying Miriam to Asa & Abigail. I can also use Abigail’s father, Joseph Marks, as one of my supplements.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Jill
jrayscott(at)cox.net
Work families of Washington Co, PA

I'm looking for information on the Work families of Washington Co, PA. I've read through the history books but can't seem to find anything of what I am looking for.

Patrick Lindsey came from Co Down, IR with his son Samuel.

Samuel Lindsey married Martha Work c. 1815 I believe in Washington Co, PA. Their first 3 children (Robert, John, William) were all born there. They moved to Guernsey Co, OH c 1821 where the rest of their children were born.

Martha Work was born 10 May 1794 and died 02 Jul 1877. In the 1870 census, she does not say that her parents were of foreign birth.

George Work (Rev War), even though he seems to be of the right age, did not have a child named Martha. He was also born in Ireland, so there are two factors that rule him out.

The person I would like to find information on is John Work who lived in Chartiers, Washington, Pennsylvania in 1800. He had 3 daughters under ten years of age so this seems more like a match at this time. John Work lived to be 90-100 per the 1830 census and is still in Chartiers. At this time, I have no further information about him or any of his children.

WORK, McKINNEY

Washington J McKINNEY and Mary Barnard CAUDLE were both born in South Carolina and were married in Bibb County, Alabama in 1847. They had seven children: Martha Lucinda, Mary Bethina, William Robert, John H, James, Nancy Ann, and Sarah Ann. By 1855 the family had moved to Anderson County, Texas and lived in the Elkhart and Salmon areas of Anderson County. Some family members later moved to Crockett in Houston County and some to Jacksonville in Cherokee County. The daughters married prominent members of the KERSH, TRIGG, WORK, and ASHLEY families. Granddaughters married into the HUDDLESTON family of Elkhart. I am seeking any and all info available on these lines. Please visit my web site at Tharpgenealogy.com to confirm, correct or continue the info I currently have.

Thank you,
David Tharp
Dallas, Texas

Memorial card for J. Myrtle Work, daughter of Moses T. Work and Tabitha L (Van Horn) Work, Indiana Co. PA

The following is a remembrance card for Jennie Myrtle Work (1862 - Dec 24, 1882), daughter of Moses T. and Tabitha L.(Van Horn)Work. We found this among the belongings of Samuel McCreey Work who was J. Myrtle Works' first cousin.

The front side of the card has printed in decorative letters;

AN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF J. MYRTLE WORK
Youngest daughter of M.T. and T.L. Work, departed this life Christmas night, 1882, aged 19 years and 23 days.

The back side has printed:
Almost suddenly the summons came to her, so bright, so full of hope for years to come. Tuesday evening preceding she met with a company of young people to practice Christmas songs for our festival and make ready the presents to decorate the Christmas tree. The organ pealed its loudest, sweetest sounds as her fingers ran over the keys, and all went "merry as a marriage bell." Christmas came, but the organist lay dying. No response came as her name was called out, and the gifts lay untouched on the organ that would never again vibrate at her touch. At midnight the Bridegroom came and she entered into the "marriage supper of the lamb." The sombre tone, the hushed music on that festival night told of the deep grief felt by her friends. The draped and silent organ, with its vase of white flowers, emblems of her life, today speak of the kind remembrance in which she is held and teaches a lesson of the shortness of life in tones tender, touching and irresistible.

"Oh,we dream not of love's might
'Till death has robed with soft and solemn light,
The image we enshrine.
There is a world, aye let us seek it, where no blight
Falls on the beautiful rose of youth, and there
We shall be with her soon."

Feel free to respond if you have any questions.
J. Work

There is a book titled the Work Family History at the Indiana County Historical Society that traces the family of
William Work born in 1760 up to his decendents in the 1980's. If the people you want to find were from Indiana County, PA originally they will probably be in that book. It is very accurate. That family started really documenting there line in 1894 when a book was published in Marion Center for a family reunion. My husband's Grandma, Emma Gertrude Work Ashbaugh, was 8 year old at the time and had a copy. Good Luck!

Thanks for responding
I live in Ohio, but on some of the Lancaster, Pa websites, there are individuals who are retired clerks for genealogists who can search for you (for a price). I have asked and paid several people to conduct courthouse document searches and very satisfied with their results. It helps if you provide specific information to eliminate alot of wasteful time. Drop an e-mail to the courthouse on which searcher does the best work and the most trustworthy, then possibly setting up a "job contract" with this person.
Hope that helps
John W.
Hi Karen, I'm researching Ann McCoy/McCay, who is an older sister of my great-great grandfather. Ann married a Henry Work (both were from Turbot Twp, Northumberland County) and appears in the 1830 census next door to her mother, Margaret McCoy. From what I can gather, Henry, Ann and their children moved to Stephenson County, Illinois, probably around 1849. Does any of this sound familiar? I have a lot more info, and would be happy to share! - Billie Smith Culler

Hi there,
I am Randy Work which Henry Work was my great great grandfather, Henry was in the Civil War when he and Melinda was married, I am not sure about what year she died, there is no head stone for her in Liberty chapel cemetery. I am would almost think she is buried in the cemetery, that is where alot of the Gipsons and Works are buried.
How are you related to the Gipson side of the family?
Henry Work and Mary Ann Gipson

Prior to his marriage to Mary Ann Gipson, Henry Work was married to Melinda Gipson, Mary Ann's aunt. From the info I've found on ancestry, it appears Melinda was still alive when Mary Ann and Henry were married. Does anyone know the story?
Thanks in advance.

Work Family History, Volume 3

My name is Marla Druzgal. I am a Work descendent, and am currently compiling data for Volume III of the Work Family History. Volumes I and II were written very well, as you probably know, by Von Gail Hamilton. I have received Mrs. Hamilton's consent to continue this wonderful family tree in a 3rd volume, and would love to learn about your families for inclusion.

If you are interested in submitting your own family information for inclusion in Volume 3, or you wish to be included on the mailing list for updates or to be contacted about purchasing the finished volume, please e-mail me:

If you have already submitted information to Mrs. Hamilton, you don't need to re-submit unless anything has changed.

marladruzgal@hotmail.com
Alternate: alexthedog@forcomm.net

I prefer the first, because I can retrieve your e-mails from the road.

Looking forward to hearing from you and recording your story for your descendents. If you want to confirm my lineage or my sincerity, please do so. I am very serious about the ethics and integrity of genealogical research.

Love Marla

Samuel & Vera Work - Seeking information

I am trying to find information about Samuel A. Work, who was a Presbyterian minister in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was married to Vera S. Work, who was a social worker. I believe they were married in 1941, but not sure. I'm estimating Samuel was born in the 1890's and Vera in 1911, or thereabouts. They had a daughter by the name of Esther, who was born in July, 1951. Samuel died in either 1952 or 1953 and Vera died in 1953.

John Wesley WORK's Spouse, Agnes HAYNES

Agnes HAYNES, was a singer who helped train the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fish University (Nashville, TN). Her spouse, John Wesley WORK, was well-known composer there also...this would have likely been in the first 2 decades of the 1900s.

Would like to learn of her ancestry.
