Charles and Martha had a daughter, Mary Jane b.1859 Brooklyn, NY m.1889 d.1934. I don't know if there were other children. Family lore says that Martha's father, William, was disowned by his father when he left England for US. Another story was that Martha was disowned by her father, Nicholas, for marrying Charles instead of the man chosen for her. This may be why I'm having so much trouble tracing them. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

James is a very common name in the early days, seems that nearly every West had a son named James. The best that I can ascertain is that Robert West of Johnston County, NC was born abt 1720 & I think that he & James were brothers. I show Henry West as James father but this may not be correct. Fred West that published the "Wests Of The Cape Fear Valley" in the 1980s show that Henry West came from England abt 1650 with other Wests as indentured servants to Virginia. Presumably a relative that was already over here paid their passage & they signed a 7 yr contract but this was not always the case, it may be that someone that was not related just wanted some very cheap help. Fred also shows that Henry had a son named Robert who was living in the Chowan Precinct of NC at the time of his death, will probated 4 June 1689. This Robert had a son named Robert, whether this was the grandson of the 1st Robert who was Robert of Johnston County or the father of Robert of Johnston County & James West of Bladen County, NC is questionable & also reasonable because the time frame is rite. This is all I have at this time but the search goes on. If find more info pls let me know.
Tommy West

I have not done any research on Samuel West Willis West's brother but I think you might be rite. In the late 1940s or early 50s someone from Kentucky came to this area researching the West Family tree. What his results were I don't know at this time or who he contacted other than Kirby West, Morton Dalma West & Jethro Augusta West my grandfather. I was a child at the time but I remember conversations about the research but no details. I would suggest that you contact Mary Frances(West)Powell email westhistorian@yahoo.com. Fran is living in MD at this time but is originally from GA. She has done some in depth research on the early West Family Tree & she may be able to help you. Fran has also published a book titled "Search For Parentage Of James E West 1804-1880 And The Progenitor James West of Bladen, Duplin, Sampson And Robeson Counties, NC. I think she is also working on another publication at this time but I don't know this for a fact. As for KY Wests I have heard that some of our people migrated to KY in the early yrs but have no documentation this. I would be very interested in what you find in your search. I have not taken the DNA test as of this date but am seriously considering it. At first I did not think I would need it because I was focusing on people in Sampson, Bladen, Cumberland & Johnston Counties, NC. I now see that I must take it. I do not know where James West b abt 1725 was born, probably what is now Johnston County, NC but not sure. James is my grgrgrgr grandfather & who his father is a pure guess at this time, I show Henry West as his father but am not sure of this. If you have any clarification on anything that I have discussed above pls share it with me.
Tommy West
I am descendant of James Hampton West and grt grt grandaughter of James Thomas West.

Nancy Ward was instrumental in helping the white settlements defend themselves against the British armies led by Dragging Canoe, Abraham and Raven in 1776. On July 20, 1776, Abraham failed to destroy the Watauga community as he had planned. However, he succeeded in capturing two of the townspeople, Mrs. William Bean and Samuel Moore. Both were to be burned at the stake. Mrs. Bean was bound and the pire was about to be lit when Nancy Ward appeared and demanded her release. Being the Ghigau, the only person granted the right to free prisoners, her demand was met. Nancy took Mrs. Bean to her home and protected her until she could be returned to her husband.
In her later years, Nancy Ward managed an Inn at Womankiller Ford on the Ocowee River in Tennessee. She was a successful businesswoman, becoming very wealthy and owning many livestock. She died in the Spring of 1824 at her home on the Ocowee River.

Nancy Ward (Nan-ye'-hi) and Tsu-la Kingfisher had two children, Kati (also known as Catherine) and Hi-s-ki-ti-hi (also known as Little Fellow).

Kati was born about 1752 and died sometime after 1793. She was married three times. Her first marriage was to Samuel Candy. They had one son, naming him Samuel Candy, Jr who was born about 1768.

Her second marriage was to John Walker. Their children were Jennie born about 1771 and John Jr born about 1773.

Her third marriage was to Ellis Harlan. He was the son of Ezekial Harlan, Jr. and Hannah Oborn. Ellis was born about 1731 and died in 1819. Ellis and Kati had seven children: Nancy born about 1777, George born about 1779, Ezekiel born about 1781, Susannah born about 1784, Ruth born about 1787, Sarah born about 1790 and Elizabeth born on 8-15-1793.

Sarah Harlan, sixth child of Kati and Ellis Harlan, married Jacob West, born in 1788 and died in 1843. Sarah died about 1837. Sarah and Jacob had seven children: Bluford born about 1809 and died 1845, John W. born on 3-29-1811, Eliza born 12-27-1813, Rosanah born about 1816, Ellis born about 1818, George born about 1820 and died about 1847, and Ezekiel born about 1822 and died about 1845.

John W. West, second child of Sarah and Jacob West, married Ruth Fields, born 12-11-1815 and died 9-22-1869. She was the daughter of George Fields and Sarah Coody. John W. died 4-4-1867. John and Ruth had eight children: William Mosley born about 1835, George Rider born on 3-18-1838 and died 5-23-1863, Martha born 7-28-1840 and died 3-30-1864, John Calhoun born 8-10-1842, James Polk born 10-10-1844, Kiamitia born 1847, Ruth Elizabeth born 11-20-1849 and Franklin Pierce born 1852 and died 1886
This thread seems to be going nowhere ... a common thing, I fear. Our family tradition is that our (would have been my)5g grandfather, Willis WEST, was born in either Virginia or North Carolina ca. 1750. Nothing else has been written about him, but he is supposed to have a son, Samuel, who moved to Kentucky before 1800, and from which I have a firm, confirmed downline leading to me--and a whole bunch of other WESTs! Every time I look at our history at this point in time, I get discouraged and head off in another direction. I've never been able to find anyone who has proved our connections to the Willis WEST who eventually moved to Georgia, and I haven't found a different one who had a son named Samuel. Now, in reviewing these messages (from 2007) this morning, it suddenly dawned on me that perhaps Willis and Samuel (his brother) mentioned here, are the guys I should be looking at! What if Samuel's father is actually James and Willis is his brother?! Any thoughts? Do any of you know if this Willis' brother, Samuel, might have gone to Kentucky, rather than Georgia, where so many others of this family went? BTW, though my name is Charles, I'm known as Chuck West from Indiana.

G.W.West / Nellie Elser

The other day I posted a note regarding William West and Nellie Nalls. Since I've found that William is in fact G.W. West and he married Nellie Elser (Nalls shows in records as well)on Dec 13, 1891 in Pope County, AR. Nellie later married a Daniel F. Ashby and died in 1951, buried at Pine Crest Mem. Park, Little Rock, AR. My question is who is G.W. West with the birth year of 1872 or 73 as was born in Arkansas as well as his parents? Any help is appreciated to get my unstuck! Many thanks.
Mary Hildreth, Walla Walla, WA

Am looking for g-grandfather William West b. 1872 Arkansas according to 1900 US Census. He married Nellie Nalls b. 1872 in Mississippi. They had children Neomi, Ruth, Jennings (my grandfather) and Ruth. I've been able to collect data on children to some degree but parents none. I did find that Nellie remarried to a Dan F. Can anyone help?
Mary Hildreth Walla Walla, Washington
buick2530@yahoo.com

Hello, try doing a West DNA search on the internet, you should be able to pull up the results. If I knew how to send that page to you, I would. Try to as it has a lot of West DNA results. It is very long and takes a few minutes to totally open the page. Hope this helps. William Nelson West born 1775 with a son John C. West has been proven to my line per a cousin doing family research. It is family group 18. I live in Mississippi, where do you live? Please respond asap. Maybe we can tie this together. Thanks. God bless, Betty

Betty,
I read your query about the West line. Where did you find the middle name of William West 1775/79 as being Nelson? He was m. to Sarah Boyd. Do you know who William's parents are? I have Morris West, Sr. as father but no mother. I also have Morris,Sr. parents as Jonathan West b. 1715 Warwick, Bucks Co. Pa. and Ruth Pemberton b. 1719 Bucks co. Pa. I am looking for proof that they were Wm. parents.

What data are you looking for on William Nelson West. I have not been able to develop his line like I would like to. I am needing his children's names. I have Thomas b. 1800 Ohio m. Eliza Tipton. I have a family of 11 children for them and have been able to develop that family.
Later,
Vi

I don't know enough about the family to know if we have a connection. All I know is Charity West married John Parker. They were both supposed to have been born in Pa.. They married in Baltimore,MD, moved to Ohio sometime after 1790. Lived first in Jefferson county, then in Harrison County where John died in 1844 and Charity died in 1849. I don't really know who Charity's father is.

Does any of this sound familiar?
