Hi,
I have read some of the requests for information from the book "
Dutch Webbers of
Indiana and
Illinois." I have that book. Your question regarding "
Croft" caught my attention!
My grandmother was Ruth Louise
Webber Croft (born 10 March 1894). She was born in
Washington State to Mary Ellen (Ellen)
Lea from
England, the second wife of Solomon Marion
Webber. My grandparents had six sons and then one daughter. They lived in Kingsburg,
California. Our name "
Croft" is a spelling change of "
Kraft", which was the name given to my great grandfather when he was in the Swedish army. The officials wanted short names that were easy to shout, plus they had too many Johnsons, Larsons, etc. So our name does not have any history in this country before 1902 when my grandfather Johan (John
Croft), two siblings, and their parents arrived from Sweden. My grandfather was the Chief of
Police of Kingsburg,
California, and
Constable for a district. Kingsburg was a really small town at the time; there was one other officer.
Would you give me your connection with "
Croft." We might have some people in common.
