I do not have exact dates for the earliest records but I can trace back to Cornwall. John Vivian was born in Cornwall England. He married Mary Jane Higgins from Ebervale, Wales. They had a son, John Vivian who was born in Nanticoke, PA 10/2/1885. He married Rose Day who was born in Honeypot, PA 8/27/1886.One of their daughters, Catherine Vivian, was my grandmother.

Wyatt--
It's a joy to connect with anyone who knew my grandparents! I can just see that old Plymouth coming down the street! My grandmother used to say that everyone got themselves and their dogs off the streets when they say Granddaddy driving (he really got pretty bad as he got older!)
And the dogs that people "donated" to Granddaddy--he could never say "no". When he finally moved to Oklahoma City to live next door to his youngest daughter Lois June Henley he took at least 6 dogs with him. I remember my cousin Bobby Henley selling puppies from one litter--these were not pure-bred dogs! We laughed at him--but you know, he made people feel that these puppies were special and he was NOT giving them to just any kind of home--guess he got all the business sense in the family--Granddaddy always said he was a doctor BEFORE doctors made any money.
Please correspond with me at my home address (I'm replying from work right now)
My home email is:
LeilaMenzies@aol.com

Ohmigosh-- this is great. Maybe you know all these things, but maybe not--Dr. Annadown was not only the doctor for Sulphur in the best sense of the word, but he was also the intellectual guru of the community. His old Plymouth car was filled up in the back seat with books, magazines, etc. which he gave to us-- it was typical for him to pull up beside me when he saw me on the street and say "Wyatt, I have something here you ought to read" and give me something he had in mind for me.

I have lots more stories about him and his life in Sulphur. He was undoubtedly one of the best loved people in the town, and for good reason. I am 75 now, and have been more or less "successful" in several vocations, but Dr. Annadown's influence on me and those I knew was exactly what one would wish. MIddle america at its best.

I will be happy to continue this coversation if you wish. My wife and I (she is also from Sulphur OK ) live in MIlwaukee)

Blessings and peace.

Wyatt Stephens

My apologies for any confusion I may have caused with my recent post claiming to have found the parents of my great great grandfather, Joseph Vivian (married to Mary Leverton. It seems the information given me about the birthdate of that Peter Vivian was incorrect. Though it makes sense that Joseph's father could be named Peter, as this was the name of one of Joseph's brothers. I did find a Peter Vivian from St Eval born 05 AUG 1764, Son of Stephen and Ann. Any information on this family is most welcome.
Yes Joan, this is my line. I am the daughter of John Henry Vivian and granddaughter of William Vivian who you mention in this message. We have communicated a bit in the past. I can't quite remember if we discovered a link with your line or not. This line of Vivian's came to United States around 1880 and is documented on this site by me. John Vivian son of William Vivian and Betsy Crowle came to US and settled in Wilkes-Barre PA. I have his ship records to show this. I'm not aware of any time that he or any of his relatives spent in the southern states. He built a house in Wilkes-Barre and lived there until he died. Some of his children could have, I have not accounted for all of them. Alexander died in an industrial accident. Most of the daughters stayed in the local area and several were unmarried. His son John Thomas Vivian married Mabel Tucker and they had two boy's, William and Edward. Edward moved to California and William moved to Detroit MI and later to Holly MI (near Flint). Edward only had one child Janet and William had three children, John Henry (my father), William (lives in Rockford IL) and Marilyn (lived in Detroit). I suggest looking farther into the line in Corwall to which my line is linked. There were a lot of son's in the family and historically, the younger boys were funded to leave and find new homes in other countries (some went to Australia). The line is traced back to Devon England also. From what I can tell, the name did go through several changes through the years, starting with Vyvyan (french) and ending in Vivian for us. It is plausable that someone added an "s"along the way.

I corresponded with Gordon T. Vivian years ago, he sent me a pedigree chart, with reference about 3 brothers coming to Ontario from Cornwall, his line stayed in ON, another line went to Western Canada. I have moved and most of that info is packed away. I will look for it as it probably pertains to the Thurlow Twn. Vivian. I remember it mentioning a Peter Vivian, there are so few of them that I have seen on charts. Joan of Michigan

I have lots of data on the Leverton side, if your interested. I would love to know more about your family. Regards Marta Metcalf mmetcalf@figzu.com

Vivians of St. Eval Cornwall

I have just discovered my ggg grandparents on the vivian side and am wondering if anyone is related to him:

Peter Vivian, born about 1779, probably in St. Eval, wife Frances, born about 1780 in Cornwall.

Their son is my gg grandfather: Joseph Vivian,b. ABT 1801
St Eval, Cornwall; moved to Ontario Canada sometime after 1845; He died at: Thurlow Twp., Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada.

Joseph married Mary Leverton in St Eval, June 11, 1825 and they had many children (I have the list). Joseph et al lived in Downhill St. Eval before moving to Canada. Joseph had two brothers Peter and Richard.

Regards
MacClurg Vivian
I couldn't reach my Grandmother about her parents, but I talked to my mother and was told her grandfather's name was William Vivian and her grandmother was Julia Elizabeth Cooper. William was from Nanticoke and Julia was from England.
Living 10 miles north of Nanticoke I know it is a relatively small town of 3.5 square miles and I find it interesting that the earlier post mentions William Vivian from Nanticoke.

Hi,
I have a Vivian family that i'm researching because of an 1882 letter i found at an antique shop. It is written from a Martha A. V. in Michigan to her cousin Isabella Knight in Ohio.
(Isabella Knights mothers name was Sarah Vivian, and Isabella's brothers middle name is Vivian, so i suspect that Martha's married or maiden name is Vivian)

The 1870 U.S. Ohio census records identify Sarah Vivian Knight as born in England.

In the letter, Martha refers to an Aunt Isabelle.

Untangling this, its possible that Sarah Vivian and Isabelle Vivian would probably be sisters, and may be the ones in your list.

My Sarah Vivian shows to be born around 1830, which is a good match. I have no idea when Isabelle was born, as i havent been able to find her in the U.S. census records yet. Do you by chance have any further information on either the Sarah or Vivian from your family list?

The letter also mentions an "Aunt Mag. Kellie", but that could be from either the Vivian side, or the other parents side.

Hi, Thank you for your detailed response. My Joseph and Mary Vivian family is from St Eval, Cornwall and came over to Ontario Canada sometime after 1846, I think. The story is that 3 Vivian brothers came: Joseph, Richard and Peter.

There where many Vivan's living in Ontario CA during that period. Eventually some of them, mine included, moved to Michigan in the later 1800's. They were raised Wesleyan Methodist in Cornwall. If you can find out where in Cornwall he came from, that would help.
Regards
MacClurg Vivian

Jenefer VIVIAN married Thomas YEATS in 1812 in Camborne, Cornwall. She did not live til the 1851 census so I don't know the parish of her birth. She was not listed as a sojourner or as a widow in her marriage record. IF she was christened in Camborne, it seems that the most likely option is the Jenefer who was christened on 9 Apr 1792 and the child of Francis and Jane.

One of the witnesses to her marriages was a Matthew BENNETTS which I realize is quite a commmon name in Camborne. However, one Matthew BENNETTS married an Elizabeth VIVIAN in 1807 in Camborne. I'm theorizing that perhaps Jenefer is a sister but this is certainly only a guess at this time.

I know that there were at least two Francis and Jane marriages in Camborne. Francis and Jane ROSKROW in 1782 and Francis and Jane ODGERS in 1777.

I have seen some of the online trees listing children for Francis VIVIAN and Jane ROSKROW. These do not elaborate what became of the daughter, Elizabeth, christened in 1785 nor list a Jenefer christened 1792.

Are these children's names derived from a will for Francis who married Jane ROSKROW or family Bible or how did these ones get differentiated from any possible children of Francis VIVIAN and Jane ODGERS and where is the Jenefer, child of Francis and Jane, christened in 1792?

I am aware of online resources and have looked at church records in Camborne and Treslothan on microfilm.

Thanks for your insights,
Karen

John and Henry Rosewarne were brothers, sons of Richard and Dorothy of Gwinear. They married sisters, Ann and Mary Vivian daughters of Joseph and Ann. Mary was not the daughter of Charles Vivian and Mary Tippett. That Mary went to Wales with her family and died a spinster about 1852. Mary Vivian Rosewarne was baptized in Illogan, as was her sister Hannah. She died in St. Erth, 1815, and was buried in Camborne. She and Henry had one daughter, Sally Vivian Rosewarne who married John Laity. Her sister Ann died in childbirth, I believe, and John, unlike Henry, remarried. I do not have the death/burial dates for John and his 3rd wife, Elizabeth.
Unfortunately, Vivian's Visitations leaves out some of the children of Ann and Joseph Vivian. I would like the death date and place for their son Joseph, who was a witness at either the marriage of Ann or Mary. He was not living at the time of Joseph's death--it seems that only Eliza and Hannah were living at that time.
I would appreciate any further information you might have.

My gg grandmother was Eliza Jane Vivian (Jenny), daughter of Peter and Grace Vivian. She married John Gillick (emigrated from Ireland as an infant in 1843) in 1865. I found some information that indicated that Mary Vivian Coop (sister of Jenny?) died on December 20, 1861 at the age of 22 years, 8 months. She was married to Reverend D.W.C. Coop.

I am a Vivian and have a huge data base of name, I have Anne Vivian married 1805 to John Rosewarne, she is the dau. of Joseph Vivian and Ann Vivian, I have this line back to 1174, so to my Tree and see if you don't already have that info. There seems to be another Rosewarne who married into the Vivian line, I have Henry who married 31 of Jan 1804 to Mary Vivian, she was the dau. of Charles Vivian and Mary Tippett.
