Vivyan / Hicks / Cornish Connection

The name "Vivyan" appeared as a middle name in several generations of the descendants of my g-g-g-grandparents John Hicks and Caoline Perry. My g-g-grandfather was Richard Vivyan Hicks, my g-grandfather's brother was Orran Vivyan Hicks, my grandfather's brother was Frank Vivyan Hicks, and my uncle was Richard Vivyan Hicks. The frequent use of the name over many generations leads me to believe that either John or Caroline came from the Vivyan line - most likely John since he was from St. Columb Major in Cornwall while Caroline was from London. If anyone knows of a Hicks / Vivyan connection in the late 1700s, I'd appreciate the info. Current family knowledge of this line ends with John Hicks and Caroline's father, William Perry. Thanks!

Try looking at the Rootsweb link CORNWALL-L (for list of messages about Vivians in Cornwall).

My g-grandparents on mother's lineage were Johnson VIVIAN, whose widow moved to Illinois with her family. Her youngest daughter, Mary Maria VIVIAN wed ANNADOWN. My grandfather carried her maiden name as his middle names. Dr. Paul Vivian ANNADOWN.

Could help your search.

Hey, I don't know about the Vivyan/Hicks connection, but I do know that the Vivyan family is from Cornwall. So I would definitely agree that the connection would be with the line from Cornwall (John's).

I have recently received papers containing the following information.
Joseph Hick (1814 in Torpoint, Cornwall-1854 in Melbourne, Australia) married Mary Vivyan (1815?-1900 in Truro Workhouse) Their second child was named Vivyan Stevens Hick (1846-1928). It is believed that Vivyan moved from Cornwall to Durham and became a militant unionist.
I would be interested to learn of any connections to the Hick or Vivyan families..

Dr. Paul Vivian Annadown was my grandfather. I am the daughter of his 2nd child, Hazel, who wed Walter Wayne Leonard. I am the name sake of his wife, Leila (Clark).
I LOVED my summers (a few cold Christmases) visiting them and enjoyed Sulphur (now Platt National) Park as our own private playground.

Ohmigosh-- this is great. Maybe you know all these things, but maybe not--Dr. Annadown was not only the doctor for Sulphur in the best sense of the word, but he was also the intellectual guru of the community. His old Plymouth car was filled up in the back seat with books, magazines, etc. which he gave to us-- it was typical for him to pull up beside me when he saw me on the street and say "Wyatt, I have something here you ought to read" and give me something he had in mind for me.

I have lots more stories about him and his life in Sulphur. He was undoubtedly one of the best loved people in the town, and for good reason. I am 75 now, and have been more or less "successful" in several vocations, but Dr. Annadown's influence on me and those I knew was exactly what one would wish. MIddle america at its best.

I will be happy to continue this coversation if you wish. My wife and I (she is also from Sulphur OK ) live in MIlwaukee)

Blessings and peace.

Wyatt--
It's a joy to connect with anyone who knew my grandparents! I can just see that old Plymouth coming down the street! My grandmother used to say that everyone got themselves and their dogs off the streets when they say Granddaddy driving (he really got pretty bad as he got older!)
And the dogs that people "donated" to Granddaddy--he could never say "no". When he finally moved to Oklahoma City to live next door to his youngest daughter Lois June Henley he took at least 6 dogs with him. I remember my cousin Bobby Henley selling puppies from one litter--these were not pure-bred dogs! We laughed at him--but you know, he made people feel that these puppies were special and he was NOT giving them to just any kind of home--guess he got all the business sense in the family--Granddaddy always said he was a doctor BEFORE doctors made any money.
