John William Vansickle [VanSickel, ctc] is reported to have married Ellen Swearingen in Harrison County, OH on 26 May 1827. Their first born, Gabriel is reported to have been born in Coshocton County, OH in 1832.
In the 1850 census the family is found in Liberty, Jefferson County, Iowa and then also included Gabriel's brother Joseph and sisters Margaret and Mary. The head of family is recorded as Jno Van Sicle age 46 born in NY (although probably should read born in NJ) Ellen is recorded as age 48 and born in PA. The children all born in OH.
John is reported to have died in 1859.
Was your Joseph (recorded as born in IN) residing (with his first wife?) in Morgan County, IN in the 1870 census?
I suspect that the "Elenor Vansickel" residing in Ray, Morgan County, IN in the 1870 census is John's widow, then residing with her married daughter Margaret.
This John is reported as of the 7th generation in descent from the immigrant Ferdinandus Van Sicklen who came to New netherland in 1653 and raised his family on Long Island.
I know that there are several researchers out there who trace thier own ancestry through John & Ellen eldest son.

James Vansickle

Jeannie,
My g-grandfather John W Smith was adopted by a James and Sarah Burr Smith. You can find them in the 1860 census Trimble Township, Athens County Ohio.John W's age is wrong he would have been only 4. Living nearby is John Vansickle, wife Ellen, children Mary C(idiotic) and Morris J. Sometime after 1860 Sarah Smith died and he married Susan(Susannah) Wood. My g-grandfather lists James and Susan Wood Smith as his parents. This is not so as he was adopted and took on the Smith name. I was able to obtain the will of James Smith in Athens where he tells the real mother of John W Smith..Ellen Dishon(Dishong). From my g-grandfathers obit he states he has a half brother Morris Vansickle and half sister who is deceased which I believe is Mary. My mother remembers Uncle Morris coming to the Smith family reunions in the early 1900's.I believe that Ellen Dishon Vansickle had Mary and John before she married John Vansickle and Morris is their child together. My g-grandfather is the illegitimate child of Ellen Dishon as stated in the will of James Smith. It is possible Mary had a different father too. There is definately a Dishong connection. Mary could not live by herself. In 1880 they are both living with Morris Dishong in Perry County possibly their grandfather. I have traced Mary and she is with different Dishong families until her death. I would love to know who Ellen Dishong(possibly Freasure) Vansickle is. The Dishong genealogists do not have her in their records. Check out the 1870 census of Trimble Township. Susan Smith(age is wrong) is taking care of her mother Elizabeth Wood(s), James has died by now and they are living next to Susan Juniper ! Here is my email I do have more.garryw1@verizon.net...Joyce

I believe you are right, her name is Mary Ellen Dishong. She may be a daughter of Morris and Sarah Strait Dishong or a daughter of Morris Dishong and Catherine Freasure Dishong his second wife. I also believe she may have married a James Green(Hocking County)possibly after the death of John Vansickle in the 1870's. She is a mystery.I have not been able to find a marriage record for her anywhere, probably have not looked in the right place! Thanks for the information, that info about Sarah Vansickle has helped a lot.
A question: I noticed that on Morris' death certificate it listed his mother as Mary Dishong and on Sarah's death certificate it is Ellen Dishong. Could Miss Dishong be Mary Ellen Dishong? And since Mary's mother was Ellen Strait, perhaps it is Mary/Ellen Dishong in the 1860 and 1870 census. It kind of goes along with what you were thinking about there being two wives of John Vansickle named Ellen.

I forgot to mention that on Mary Vansickle's death certificate she lists her parents as John Vansickle and Ellen Strait. It is possible that Ellen Dishon gave John to James and Sarah Smith and Mary and Morris to John and Ellen Vansickle to raise. It is possible Ellen Vansickle and Ellen Dishon are not the same person. In the 1860 Census, Trimble Twsp. Athens County you find John Vansickle,
Ellen,Mary and Morris. By 1870 you find them in the Ward Twsp., Hocking County Census. John, Ellen, Mary(helping mother), Morris and Sarah. Also in the Hocking County census of 1870 you will find Morris Vansickle listed in the William and Mary Dishon family. In the 1880 Census Morris Vansickle is living with Morris Dishong (Morris Dishong's first wife was Sarah Strait). There is a Mary Roberts listed as a servant who is the same age as Mary Vansickle, could be her. By 1900 Mary Vansickle is living as a boarder with the Moses Dishong family in Ward Twsp. Hocking county Ohio. It states she cannot read or write and birthdate unknown. In 1910 Mary is back in Athens County living with Henry and Maude(Dishong) Breeze(spelled Bauze in the census records). She is listed as their Aunt. When Mary Vansickle died on July 20, 1911 Mrs. Maude Breeze signed the death certificate. There is a definite connection to the Dishong family. I always wondered what happened to Sarah Vansickle, thanks for the information. Hope this is helpful...Joyce

I have a marriage record for George Juniper and Susan Vansickle dated 11 January 1863. In the 1870 census for Trimble Township, Athens County, Susan Juniper is living with her three sons John, Thomas and George along with her neice Mary. It looks like George Juniper died befor 1870. As I stated before I found guardianship papers filed by Susan Juniper on behalf of her minor children John Hiram, George W and Thomas Z.The papers were served 21 June 1876.This must have been right before they moved to Greenup Ky.and they sold property. Does this sound right? Is James Vansickle Susan's husband? If so he must have died prior to 1863 when she married George Juniper. I am interested however in a John Vansickle who married Ellen Freasure and can be found in Trimble Twsp. Athens County in 1860. Are they related to James?...Joyce

Actually, upon further research, it appears that Susan may have been James' stepmother. I found that she and Andrew were married in 1852- 8 years after the birth of James. But I have no doubt that the children with Susan in the 1870 and 1880 censuses were the children of Susan and Andrew. What would really be nice is an obituary for James or his siblings. James' death certificate did not list his father, but it did have Susan on it. So I'm kind of scratching my head on this one.

I only have a small clue as to Andrew VAN SICKLE- the 1870 Census Susan JUNIPER household lists a Mary VAN SICKLE and it says, "lives with aunt". I believe this Mary was the daughter of John VAN SICKLE (who was born c. 1825 in Ohio and who resided in Athens County in 1860 and Hocking County in 1870.) Why I can't find either John or Andrew in earlier censuses is beyond me!

Please email me or contact me through my genealogy blog if you have any info. that may help me. I prefer to do genealogy correspondence in writing, since it in itself is documentation. As far as I can tell, I'm not related to any of your family, but I'll be glad to help you out if I am able. :D

Jeannie
http://genealogygenie.blogspot.com/

I am now certain that James was the son of Andrew VANSICKLE and Susan SKIVERS or SHIVERS.

It proved to be very helpful that James' brother, John, also married a BARNHART in Greenup County. I was able to find death records for both John and his wife, Mahala BARNHART-VANSICKLE in Ohio. John's death certificate listed the names of his parents. I also found the death certificate for James' brother, George (whose death certificate listed the same parents as John). All of the information matches census records for your family. Plus, it appears that the wife of Jacob BARNHART, Mary SKIVER, may be a relation to Susan.

Please contact me via email or through the message board here, and I'll gladly send all the documents I found to you.

Jeannie
http://genealogygenie.blogspot.com/

Hi- I just posted a response to you at the Vansickle board. I have death certificates of both James and Marilla. On Marilla's certificate, it lists her parents as Jacob Barnhart and Mary Skiver.

I'm very much interested in the VANSICKLE name, since I have been unable to trace my own ancestors as far as I'd like. I've been collecting info. on the name, especially those with ties to Ohio. So far, I've been unable to connect James to the branch that lived in Athens Co. Ohio.

I can add though that James' mother, Susan, was probably not born Susan JUNIPER. She was married to a George JUNIPER on 11 January 1863 in Athens County, Ohio, and recorded there in 1870 as a widow. Her VANSICKLE children were incorrectly enumerated as JUNIPER.

I hope to find more info. for you very soon. I'd be interested in any info. you can share with me.

Thanks,
Jeannie
http://genealogygenie.blogspot.com/

P.S. James VANSICKLE was first married to a woman named Nancy CALENTINE. I have updated info. on James and both wives at Find A Grave:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=37...

I am doing a major research project on this surname and am currently researching this branch. I found very little thus far, but if I am correct, your great-grandmother, Susie, was first married to a Mr. William WATKINS.

My interest is to tie James Vansickle successfully to a family in Ohio. If I find his ancestry, I'll be sure to let you know.

Jeannie
http://genealogygenie.blogspot.com/

Is the Abraham that you speak of the father of Daniel VanSickel, husband of Ida Nixon, father of David C. Vansickel? I am looking for info on Abraham Vansickel, married to Esther, son, Daniel VanSickel. Apparently Daniel was married previous to his marriage to Ida Nixon, having children James F. b. 1824; Charity b. 1826; Abraham b. 1828 and Rebecca v. 1830. I only have the Ida Nixon marriage, nothing on Daniel's first marriage. Is this your line to the Abraham that you mentioned? Thanks, JB Wilson

This one has been resolved...Mary Ellen Minot VanSickler was born in CA according to the 1880 census.

She married John Henry James Burnside in the 1890 (late I'm thinking) and was divorced in the early 1900s due to abuse.

She remarried (but I don't know that name) and she remarried a sailor (who I'm told was killed in a bar fight). She died in the 1940s.

Elise Burnside Wilson

I believe I have some information for you about the Vansickle family from Athens County Ohio who relocated to Greenup Kentucky.I found guardianship papers this summer for the three minor children of Susan Vansickle Juniper.John Hiram, George W and Thomas Z Vansickle. They can be found in 1860 in Trimble Township, Athens county Ohio. The papers were served 21 June 1876. I believe by the 1880 census you can find Susan Juniper, John, George and Thomas in Greenup, Kentucky. Could your James be a brother to them?..Joyce

Hi there

I believe I have some history on Isaiah. I have a history of vansickle names with Isaiah being the first child of Elizabeth Rolosun and Cornelius Van Sickle. I can give you a lot more history if you would like. Isaiah was born in Cayuga (now Tompkins county), New York, November 3, 1809. In 1817 he moved with his parents to Central Ohio. He was married in Delaware County Ohio, in January 21, 1835 to Huldah, daughter of Thomas Carney, by whom he had two children. i am related to Isaiah through his son Volney who was my great great great grandfather.

email me for more info at Greg@homesteadretreats.com.

greg

I am trying to trace the parents of Aaron Van Sickle (VanSyckle) who was born in 1807 in Warren County, NJ. I have found his name in the 1850 census there and saw that Samuel VanSyckle is also listed in the census and would have been an appropriate age to be his father. Does anyone have a list of the children of Samuel VanSyckle?

Hi Christine

Was wondering if you have information on all of Isaac's children, grandchildren, etc. I have a James Sickle that could be his son. James has a son Isaac as well. James married Mary Ann Hopkins and lived in Brantford in 1880.

I've seen there name listed as VanSickle and Sickles. Is this common in the area?

Would like to share info if these families match.

Karen
