My grandmother Sarah was born in Hickman County in about 1887 or 1892. Her mother was Brownie Totty who married John R. Terrell. Sarah always talked about going to the circus in Littlelot to see the circus which had the two smallest women in the world. Lately, there is a marriage record Vol 1, book 4, page 370 showing Ferrell, John R. to Magnona B. Totty 11 Mar 1882 by R.M. Anderson------Bondsman, W.b. Hines. I believe this could be same but someone wrote F vice T. 1910 Maury Co Tn Dist 119, Sheet 6B, Hampshire Pike, Apr 15th lists Tirell, John age 52, wife, Maggie, Dau. Sarah J. age 23, single, William Carroll 21, Bessie age 19, Clyde, Eulah and Hobart. Maggie could be nickname for Magnona. This is definitely my line. Sarah and Bessie (sisters) married Will and Sam Riggins who were brothers. Bessie's marriage record was in Maury County in 1913.
There is another record or two that are maybe's. Anyway, all of my family went to the Church of Christ in Totty's Bend back in the late '70's for homecoming. The story goes that the last wish of Brownie was to have a drink of water from the Parker Springs.
Do you know of any records of this totty? Also, Sarah said she was part Indian. If this is true, I would like to know how to prove it.
Thanks,
Sue

Re: Totty's Bend TN

Johnson H. Totty married Susan Spradlin, the sister of Rhoda. They moved from Hickman County, Tenn., to Independence, Missouri. Johnson's mother was Martha F. (Patsy) Johnston, daughter of Miles Johnston and Mary Totty. Mary Totty's parents were Francis Totty and Priscilla Gill. Johnston Totty's father was Harrison Totty of Hickman County, Tenn. This is my wife's line. She was a Totty. I see that your name is Johnston. I've been working on the line of the Miles Johnston that married Mary Totty in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Records indicate that they moved down into Halifax County, North Carolina. In the diary of Rhoda Totty, she mentions in one entry a Moses Johnson that comes by. Johnson Totty was a magistrate in Totty's Bend before the Civil War. He became a company staff sgt. in the Federal Cavalry during the war and was stationed in Kansas. He was one of the few Totty men who joined the Federal army. After the war, Johnson Totty and Susan began a migration to Utah to be with the Mormons but turned back to Independence, Missouri, when the journey became too difficult. William Totty, son of Johnson, returned to Totty's Bend. I understand he was the only one to return. William and Elizabeth Totty were the parents of James C. Totty, who is buried at Shaw, Mississippi. James C. Totty was the father of Loyd Totty, buried at Star City, Arkansas. Loyd Totty was my wife's father.
I corresponded with Alma Seitz several years ago in beginning a process of discovery. She was very helpful.
Bob Lamb

Totty family in Hickman co. Tn.

I am seeking information on the TOTTY-HOWE connection in Hickman co. tn. I am requesting information on Rebecca Howe and the Totty family In addition to the census info for 1860 & 1870, Listed below, Rebecca is also shown on the 1850 Hickman Co. census as 63 yrs., born in Virginia, and living in the household of Matilda (Totty) Grinder. On the 1860 Hickman Co., Tn. census, I found a Becca Howe, 80, b.Va. living in the household of Herbert Totty 60 b.Va with Betty & Milly A. Totty. On the 1870 census, Rebecca Howe, 85, b.Va. is shown keeping house and living alone. Next door to her is Matilda, 52, b.Tn., and Martha, Mary C., L.B., Lavisa, and Zach Totty. I'd also appreciate any information you may have for Joseph Howe and John Howe. They are both shown as witnesses, along with Harrison Totty, on 2 deeds in 1824 in Hickman Co. I have hit some brick walls in my Howe research and am hoping you can give me some information on this Rebecca Howe and her connection to the Totty family. Other How/Howe names I am researching are William, Joseph, John, Catherine, Zebedee/Zebedu, and Emzley/Emsley. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Karen

Noticed you are in Wichita Falls. Did you see the Nov 9, 2003 article "Markings of history' in the "Living" section of the Times Record News? It is a story of two of my dad`s cousins visiting the gravesites of Frank M. Totty, Apr 3, 1827 - Jan 31, 1884, and Rhoda Totty, Nov 6, 1824 - Apr 9, 1899.
The old Bean cemetery is located on private land that used to be the Totty farmland. It also mentioned a stone chimney of the old cabin.
Doris Harvill Johnston

Have you read the book, "Tottys and Totty Ties" by Alma Seitz covering the years 1685-1975? Her father was Frank Marion Totty, son of Capt. Frank M. Totty, son of William Totty, son of Thomas Totty. They are traced from Va. to N.C. to Tn to Tx.
Capt. Frank M. Totty was my gr-gr-grandfather.
Also there is a Totty website that a descendant has transcribed Rhoda Spradlin Totty`s [Mrs. Frank M. Totty] diary of life in Montague Co., Tx. in the mid 1800`s.
www.totty-families.org/diary

By the way, I am descended from James Totty and Mary Orton - James was my Great Grandfather, his son Cecil B Totty is my grandfather, Cecil's son Cecil Gene Totty was my father.
Hope som of this is helpful.

Totty Ammons Connection

I believe myself to be a decendent of Henry Ammons and Christiana Totty who were married prior to 1820 in Hickman County. My great great grandfather was one of their children. His name was John Ammons. Christiana died in 1835 and is buried in the Totty Family Cemetery. Henry married Christiana's sister in law, Naomi Whittington Totty. Naomi's husband had died earlier. Henry died in 1838 and was buried in the Totty Family Cemetery. Naomi later married a Pruitt. I was hoping the Totty Family Bible might enlighten me regarding the children of the Henry/Christiana marriage. How do I reach your website. Will appreciate your help in this matter.
My connection is as follows, Henry Ammons, John Ammons/1820, Andrew Ammons/ 1859, William Green Ammons /1879, and then my mother, Leora May Ammons Graham/1900.

Thank you,

Curtis Graham

Ann--just found your message on this board a few minutes ago...I thought you already had this information? I have all we know about the Tottys on Grandpa's line (so does Grandma, Lois, Susan, Kayla, and several others)...let me know what you need...I can go back to the first Totty in America (Thomas Totty I from Leeds, Yorkshire, Eng.--settled in Henrico Cty., VA between 1662-1685). Not much is known about Sophronia, because she was half-Comanche and is buried in Indian Territory (she killed herself at age 40 by drinking a bottle of lye. Aunt Emma thinks she had the same bone disease I have--said she was always breaking bones, and the last year of her life was in absolute agony due to pain); but her parents were John Whitfield Totty (Frank & Rhoda's son) and Sara Ellen Yondell; Sara's parents were William and Sara Yondell--that is as far as it goes...I tried to ask Aunt Emma about Sophronia a few times, but Grandma always had a fit...she claimed it upset Aunt Emma--but I think it actually upset Grandma; Aunt Emma always seemed not to mind. Anyway, Ann, get in touch with me, sweetie, and let me know what all you need, and I will let you have it...love to all...Betty
