Ann--just found your message on this board a few minutes ago...I thought you already had this information? I have all we know about the Tottys on Grandpa's line (so does Grandma, Lois, Susan, Kayla, and several others)...let me know what you need...I can go back to the first Totty in America (Thomas Totty I from Leeds, Yorkshire, Eng.--settled in Henrico Cty., VA between 1662-1685). Not much is known about Sophronia, because she was half-Comanche and is buried in Indian Territory (she killed herself at age 40 by drinking a bottle of lye. Aunt Emma thinks she had the same bone disease I have--said she was always breaking bones, and the last year of her life was in absolute agony due to pain); but her parents were John Whitfield Totty (Frank & Rhoda's son) and Sara Ellen Yondell; Sara's parents were William and Sara Yondell--that is as far as it goes...I tried to ask Aunt Emma about Sophronia a few times, but Grandma always had a fit...she claimed it upset Aunt Emma--but I think it actually upset Grandma; Aunt Emma always seemed not to mind. Anyway, Ann, get in touch with me, sweetie, and let me know what all you need, and I will let you have it...love to all...Betty

Don't contact Bill & JoAnn to reach me, I will never know you tried...no matter how many times I beg Bill to tell me when he has heard from my family, he refuses to...you will have to ask him why, the only answer he ever gives me is, "I don't know"...anyway, let me hear from you, soon...love you, Betty

P.S.--Check the Family Tree sites in a couple of days, I am working on putting both Grandma & Grandpa's trees up, but will take me a little to get it all down...bjd.

Noticed you are in Wichita Falls. Did you see the Nov 9, 2003 article "Markings of history' in the "Living" section of the Times Record News? It is a story of two of my dad`s cousins visiting the gravesites of Frank M. Totty, Apr 3, 1827 - Jan 31, 1884, and Rhoda Totty, Nov 6, 1824 - Apr 9, 1899.
The old Bean cemetery is located on private land that used to be the Totty farmland. It also mentioned a stone chimney of the old cabin.

My grandmother Sarah was born in Hickman County in about 1887 or 1892. Her mother was Brownie Totty who married John R. Terrell. Sarah always talked about going to the circus in Littlelot to see the circus which had the two smallest women in the world. Lately, there is a marriage record Vol 1, book 4, page 370 showing Ferrell, John R. to Magnona B. Totty 11 Mar 1882 by R.M. Anderson------Bondsman, W.b. Hines. I believe this could be same but someone wrote F vice T. 1910 Maury Co Tn Dist 119, Sheet 6B, Hampshire Pike, Apr 15th lists Tirell, John age 52, wife, Maggie, Dau. Sarah J. age 23, single, William Carroll 21, Bessie age 19, Clyde, Eulah and Hobart. Maggie could be nickname for Magnona. This is definitely my line. Sarah and Bessie (sisters) married Will and Sam Riggins who were brothers. Bessie's marriage record was in Maury County in 1913.
There is another record or two that are maybe's. Anyway, all of my family went to the Church of Christ in Totty's Bend back in the late '70's for homecoming. The story goes that the last wish of Brownie was to have a drink of water from the Parker Springs.
Do you know of any records of this totty? Also, Sarah said she was part Indian. If this is true, I would like to know how to prove it.
Thanks,
Sue
