Re: Books on the Tomlin Family

I perused over the titles to some of their books and they look like they might be good as they appear to deal with specific genealogies. So much of the surname product business is a big scam as they make it sound like everyone with the same surname comes from the same root person of their surname. Thus they make it sound like we all have the same family history. The so called "family crest" pedders are a good example of this. Actually a crest is merely part of a coat of arms and coats of arms were not granted to families but to individual men and are inheritable property by individual men.
Any time you go into someone's home and see one of those walnut plaques with a coat of arms on it on their den wall or over their fire place, it is okay to smile to yourself but to laugh at people in their own homes about something like that would be rude. A coat of arms that has been legitimately passed down from father to son will not be mounted on a walnut plaque and actually it will not have your surname over or under it. Most were granted before surnames were common or stable.

Hi. Wow, it's been awhile. Glad to see someone is still looking.

Yes, I would like to see your tree.

I've pretty much ran into a deadend with finding any further info on my Josephine E. Tomlin. I believe her name is actually Emmia and that she went by her middle name. That's how a majority of my family from the south do.

Thanks, Rick

Hello Laura,

Jean Collins passed away in January 2003. She did indeed have a connection to your same Tomlin line. She was a descendant of my great grandmother's sister, both daughters of Matilda Talitha (Tomlin) Matthews.

I believe, you & I corresponded a couple of years ago. We discussed DNA testing for genealogical purposes. I shared with you about having had a full sequence mtDNA & that my mtDNA was from our Mary Unknown, wife of William Tomlin, because, I am a direct female to female descendant of Mary's.

I'm curious if any direct male descendants of our Tomlin line has been DNA tested. Do you know if anyone has been DNA tested?

Carole Kane

Philip was supposedly born in 1953 and Janet in 1955 they are brother and sister but may have been adopted into the Bennett family.Their parents were Philip Bennett(1921-1988) and Connie Green(c1920) in Birmingham. I am trying to trace their whereabouts.

Tomlin Photo Album

I have a photo album from the 1940's belonging to Ann Tomlin. That was her married last name, I have no idea what her maiden name was. She could still be alive. My aunt found this album at a garage sale where the man said he had found it in a trash can at some estate sale. I am so glad he saved it!! Anyways, about the album....

The album belonged to "Ann" and begins in 1945. She refers to her then-boyfriend as Tommy. They get engaged in November 1945 on a trip to Tallahassee, Florida. She is still referring to her fiancee as Tommy in the pictures. There is a picture labeled "August - 1946 Mr. & Mrs. Tomlin in Austin, Texas." Evidently Tommy is in the Navy because in several pictures he is in his Navy uniform. She talks about him "leaving for Dallas", so I'm not sure if they lived in Florida at first or not. At this point, she starts referring to Tommy in quotes, like this "Tommy" as if it's a nickname. There are several pictures of square-dances in Smithville, Texas in Spring 1948. All of the sudden she starts referring to her husband as Bill instead of Tommy, and from this point until the end of the album, she labels her husband's name as Bill. So could her husband's name have been William Thomas Tomlin? Or was "Tommy" just a nickname for Tomlin? I would love to find out why she changes his name! In July of 1948 they move to Chicago and acquire a cat they name Jezebelle Cyclops Tomlin, or "Jezzy" for short! The album ends in the winter of 1949. There are several loose pictures stuck in some blank pages at the end of the album and some of them have writing on the back, but I am not sure how they connect to this family.

If this sounds like it may be one or some of your ancestors, I would absolutely love to send this album to its family where it belongs.

If you can answer any or all of these questions, I will send you the album:

1)Ann has a brother she refers to in the album. She refers to him by his real name first, and from then on she calls him by his nickname. What is the brother's name and/or nickname?

2)What is Ann's birthday?

3)Ann labels several pictures of a boy that looks like he may be Bill's (her husband's) brother. What is his name? He may be Ann's brother, but I believe he is Bill's.

4)Ann labels a picture of her and her husbands' first home together. She gives the address of the house. What is the address?

Again, if you can answer any or all of these questions, it will prove that you are the rightful owner of this album. I really hope I can find this family!

Tomlin & Robbins -- AL to TN to TX

I'm searching for the parents of my great-great grandfather, John Thomas Robbins born on May 6, 1869. He may have spelled his last name as either Robins or Robbins. According to my grandmother, he went by the nickname Tom. He was born in Alabama according to census info, as were both of his parents -- names unknown.

At some point, he and/or his family moved to Tennessee, where Tom married Amanda J Tomlin (who was born in Tennessee). She's the daughter of William Patrick Tomlin & Ollie Kite. My branch of the Tomlins were very well known for their mass migrations every 20 years or so, and so were the Robbins apparently.

Tom's known siblings were Minnie, Jerusha Jane b.1874, Sim & Sarah P. b.1867. All I know about Minnie & Sim are that they were younger than the other siblings I have dates for.

Please, if you have any info on John Thomas, his siblings, and especially his parents it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Feel free to reply here, or to pineapple84@suddenlink.net -- Thanks for reading!
