My mother's maiden name is Todd.
A tradition has been handed down in her family, that we are descended from a David Todd, weaver of
Paisley in
Scotland, who migrated to
England with 13 sons.
However I have been unable to confirm or verify this tradition in any way.
I have traced my own line back to George Todd of Brompton near Northallerton in
Yorkshire, who died in 1842 aged 84 and who claimed to have been born in
Yorkshire.
Before that, the name is so common in
Yorkshire that it is very difficult to prove anything with any certainty.
George Todd did have a son - his ninth and youngest son - who was a weaver and who was called David, but no known connection with
Paisley.
Are there any other Todd descendants out there with a similar family tradition?
