Tocks

I am descended from the Lincolnshire tocks - William born c1750 married Lucy Hales in 1774 Bracebridge Lincs. Their son Samuel married Elizabeth unknown and had Thomas in 1812 in Winterton Lincs (married Ann Thomas). The rumour is that the family were originally weavers who came from the netherlands and they have been in the Winterton area of Lincolnshire / Humberside for nearly 300 years. My gr gr grandad Tom Tock born 1851 (son of above Thomas), married Hannah Fenwick, said that a loom that was used by his ancestors is now in the London Museum of Natural History. I can't seem to get the Tocks linked in late 1790s / early 1800s - there are alot of local tocks - west halton, thealby, crowle, frodingham, gunhouses - I'm sure thay must be linked somehow and was wondering if anyone could help me. Any information gratefully received. Jackie

Thanks for responding to my query. I would be interested in learning about James Samuel Tuck's descendants, and I can share information about his half-sisters and their descendants if you are interested. I noticed when I was searching the web for information that there is a James Tuck who is a professor at the University of Newfoundland and I wondered if he was related. I am descended from James/John Tock/Tuck's oldest daughter Mary Elizabeth, the only one of his children born in England. She is my great-grandmother. That's the first I've heard that James was known as John in New Brunswick - I wonder why that was? He seemed to like starting over, so maybe it had something to do with that. Anyway, if you would like to exchange information you can email me at
eafischer_99@yahoo.com
Thanks again,
Elizabeth Fischer (Seattle)
Too cool! I am descended from John Tuck (that's how he was known in New Brunswick) and Margaret Mowatt. Margaret was from St. Stephen, New Brunswick, just across the border from Maine. She and my great-grandparents, my grandparents, and my parents are all buried in the same plot in St. Stephen. Their only son James Samuel was born in 1867, and then John left for California, leaving the family. I just learned from you two about the previous wife and the four daughters, so thank for that. I have all the information about the descendants of James Samuel, if you are interested. James Samuel would be my great-grandfather...his tombstone photo is attached.

Thank you, I'd appreciate any information you'd be willing to share. I lent a book with a lot of information on the family to a relative, but when I get it back I will send you any information it has on Martha (or all the family if you'd like). I know Martha was the mother of Emma and Mary E. but as far as the other girls, I can't be sure without the book. I know Martha died in Maine in the 1860's and that James re-married Margaret in the mid-west (Chicago, I think) where he had a son before moving to San Joaquin, California (w/o the second wife and son). My e-mail is blueomega128@yahoo.com, please e-mail me with any info you might have on the family or questions.

Leah

Hello:
I was very interested to see your information. I was not even sure if Martha was the mother of all the girls, or if she had died in England and James remarried, but your message indicates that Martha was the mother of all. Do you know when and where she died? I have never found anything about her death. Feel free to email me at
eafischer_99@yahoo.com. I have more information about James and Martha and their families, so I will check my notes and let you know.
-Elizabeth
James and Martha's daughter, Emma Sophia, is a g-g-g grandmother of mine. I do have some information in a family book on the Tock's though I don't remember how much is in it as regards to Martha. I will look and see when I get the book back. They actually came to the US, not New Brunswick and settled in Maine. Martha was visiting friends in New Brunswick when she went into early labor and had Emma, all the other girls were born in Maine as far as I know (except of course Mary E. who was born in Alkborough in England). I have more information on the family in my Ancestry family tree. If you type in Emma Sophia Tock on Ancestry and find a public member tree that says "Shinn Family Tree" that is my tree and has some info on the family, including Jame's parents and the possible parents of Martha. If you have different information or more that I don't know about, please let me know. Also, I have pictures of James and Emma Sophia if you would like copies.

You posted this a while ago so you may already know this, but death certificates are a good source of information, and most states started keeping them around the first decade of the 20th century. You can send away for your grandfather's death certificate from the state he died in, and if it's complete it will tell you his parents' names & birthplaces. If he died young his parents may have also lived into the 20th century and you could get their birth certificates. My Tock line came from Lincolnshire England, and there were many Tocks there in the 19th century, so it may turn out that they come from there.

My g-g-grandfather was James Tock, born in 1818 in Alkborough which is just 3 - 4 miles from Garthorpe in what used to be Lincolnshire. So I'm not sure if this is the same man. My James emigrated to New Brunswick in the 1850's and to California in the 1870's, and had 4 daughters & 1 son. There were a lot of Tocks in Lincolnshire, and the LDS website has good information on births & marriages there. I can post more info if you decide that my James is your James.

My g-g-grandparents James & Martha Tock (nee Wadd) were living in Lincolnshire, UK, in the 1851 census with their daughter Mary Elizabeth, age 3. Soon after that they emigrated to New Brunswick, where 3 other daughters were born: Annie, Sarah & Emma. I find no trace of Martha in Canada, so not sure if she died before or after the move from the UK, or if she is the mother of the 3 younger girls. James remarried a woman named Margaret and had a son James, then moved with his daughters to California. Would appreciate any information on Martha, especially where and when she died.

Do any of the Oil City Tocks know where their ancestor came from in Germany? My grandfather came from Schleswig-Holstein which was Danish at the time of his birth, but after the Prussian War became German. My great-great-grandparents had six children, four of them boys. I know about two of the boys, but not the other two. One was named Asmus Christian and the other was Jochim Friedrich. Do those names sound familiar to anyone?

I am Mary Ann Tock and my ancestors did come from Denmark. At one time they lived in Schleswig-Holstein, which at the time of my grandfather's birth (1854) was part of Denmark. After the Prussian War, my great-grandfather took the family to the Hjorring area of Denmark. I believe it was from there that they emigrated to the US in the 1870s. My great-grandfather and three sons (one of them my grandfather) went to Outagamie County, Wisconsin in the early 1870s and my great-grandmother (Catherine G E Schroeder) came in 1874 with five children.

I googled my own name and came across this website. My name is Kevin Tock and I live in East Yorkshire in England. I believe the origin of the surname is Danish in origin and was brought over to England by the Danes. There is some evidence to support this as it is actually a fairly common name in this region of England with a few villages such as Tockwith also bearing the name

Hi Sharon, my gran was Kate Smith, born 1906 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. Her mother's maiden name was Mary Tock. Until recentley I had thought that she was also from the Barnsley area, but new info. points to her being the daughter of James H.S.Tock. On the 1881 James H.S.'s youngest daughter is shown as Mary M.Tock, there is the birth of a Mary Morfit Tock registered in Thorne 1879 which is about right, On my great grans headstone she is named as Mary Moorfoot Smith. I think the unusual middle names - although not exactly the same - are near enough to say that James H.S. was also my great great grandfather. I would be very happy to share what info I have with you.

Steve.

Tock surname

There were many Tocks in Lincolnshire, England, around the Humber River, in the 19th century. My g-g-grandfather, James Tock, was born in Alkborough, Lincolnshire in 1818. He had several daughters but only one son, James Tock, who apparently changed his name to Tuck, born in probably Maine in about 1868.

I just started my research on the Tock family when I read your post. I believe the Mrs. FM Byers you are referring to is my ggrandmother, Mary Agnes Tock (1884-1971). She married Frank Mathew Byers in 1907 and they had one child, Dorothy (b1914), my grandmother. My grandmother is an only child and sadly she lost most of her family pictures when she moved many years ago. I would love to have a copy of some pictures if you would be so kind as to e-mail them to me. I would be so greatful!! I would love to be able to share any info I have! Thank you so much!

Orson W. Tock

I know exactly who you are looking for. I was married to Michael Crouse Tock. His gr.grandfather was Dr. Orson Wilson Tock of Flushing Michigan. He is buried in the Tock plot in Flushing. He was a medic in the Civil War. I was told he was at the battle of Look-Out Mountain. He became a doctor (M.D.) after the war. His daughter was Ella Mary Tock (there were other children, too). I think she was a twin.
Ella, called Mary, married a Darrow (supposedly from the Clarence Darrow branch) and lived, I believe in N.C. They had two children, Orson Wilson and Barbara. She left T.K.Darrow and came home to Flushing when the children were young. They took the name of Tock as their surname. Both of these children attended the U. of M. Barbara was a social worker and later a teacher. Orson became an osteopathic doctor.

Barbara married Marlin Bailey. They had three sons. John is deceased. Dr. Thomas Tock Bailey and Robert live in Rochester, Michigan. Barbara and Marlin are deceased.

Orson married Mabel Belle Umphrey. They had three children. Bruce and Mary Ann are deceased. Michael lives in (I heard) St. Helen, Mi., a recent move from Prudenville, Mi.

Michael and I had two children. Michelle and Jeffrey, both of whom are living in Mi.

My informatioon comes mostly from Aunt Barbara who was my dear friend and liked to talk about her family heritage.

I would appreciate anything you might be able to tell us as Phil Webb (my son's father-in-law) and I are trying to put together a family history for our grandaughter in common and my three other grandchildren. Phil is on the message board inquiring as you are about Dr.O.W.Tock. The younger doctor once had a practice in Owosso, but gave it up due to the depression years. He died very young (I believe he was 59).

I hope this will help.

Doris M. Tock
