Mary,
I have our Thomas Tanner traced back to late 1700's near Savannah. He at one time owned land in Athens area and a portion of U of GA supposedly built on it. He was in a number of counties after that. Contact me again to compare notes.

I have data on this line of Tanners as they are distant related to my line. They all descend from a Thomas Tanner that was in the Savannah area in the late 1700’s. My line is Silas Tanner that apparently is the brother to John Thomas Tanner (born about 1806) (the John Tanner of which you are referring). It appears the Thomas Tanner, father of John T. Tanner, died in either DeKalb County or Cherokee County OR Henry County in or about 1838. Thomas’ widow appears to be Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) Tanner. (Not to be confused with the Thomas Tanner that married Elizabeth Murphy in VA and died in VA about the same period of time). It appears there may be another brother that moved northward near the Tennessee line (these people moved because of land grants about that period of time). Note that your John was in Carroll County about this same time and lost land there. Also note that there is a land deal with him and Elizabeth (same as was with Silas) in DeKalb…the closest I have to proving positively their relationship.

I have most of the lineage of John T. Tanner traced—especially those in Jefferson County. AL. There is one segment of this line that is buried near Alpine, AL that is a bit more sketchy.

If you are interested in the information I have, please reply
Samuel, Benjamin, William Tanner
Hello All,

I was wondering if, over the years, anyone has ever found a connection between these three in NC or VA?

I know Samuel Tanner was born abt. 1744 NC and migrated to Muhlenburg Co., KY and then to (present day) Williamson Co., IL.

Benjamin and William were born around the same time in NC. Years ago someone was trying to trace them to a William Tanner from England, whose wife died right after coming to America. They thought he had given the boys to others to work around VA or NC while he went back to England.

So........any updates? I would love to know as I am sure lots of others would too!

Thanks,
Bonnie Graves
Samuel>James>William>Nancy>Harrison>Me

A lot of the information that some of you are looking for can be found in the book by John Tanner "Some Tanners from Southern Illinois". John started way back in the 1960's tracing the Samuel Tanner line and his descendants. If you have not contacted him, I suggest you do so. Its a great book, helped me out a lot, and I was able to connect my family lines through John.

Good luck!
Bonnie Graves
Samuel>James>William>Nancy>Harrison

Hello. Thanks for your help. Walter Eugene Tanner was born 29 March 1875 in Nevada,Barton County, Missouri. His parents were Adolphus and Martha (Robertson) Tanner. He died in Richwood, West Virginia, on 24 October 1955. He grew up in Erie, Neosho County, Kansas. He married a woman named Helen. He went to college and seminary in Kansas, Missouri, and Massachucetts. He was a minister and lived in quite a few places: California, China, Kansas, Missouri, and West Virginia. There is confusion over this problem: There may have been another Walter Tanner who was born 1877 in Sedalia, Missouri,(not far from Nevada, MO) who was also a Baptist minister, and who also married a woman named Helen.(or this could be a mistake that has been repeated down through the years) That is one of things that I am trying to set straight about Walter and his wife. I need to find out what happened. I am attempting to get Walter and his wife's obits from West Virginia. West Virginia is not an easy state to get info out of. Any info that you have would be appreciated. Thank you. Brian

He recieved seven awards for bravery. During WW1, YMCA volunteers recieved awards for bravery, even though they were civilians.
Ken,
It seems we are cousins. Mary is my 4th great grandmother. I wish I had more to share.

I don't know what it's worth, but I too had heard the rumors of the Tanners being Cherokee or part Cherokee. I did a dna test with AncestrybyDNA a few years ago. It also tested for Native American heritage.
Assuming that Vincent/Vinson was full-blooded Cherokee and his wife was not. That would make me .390625% Cherokee, or 1/256. I have that same amount on my mother's side, assuming rumors are true that is. So, I am apparently .781125% or 1/238 Cherokee.
I took the Ancestry by DNA test and came back as 100% IndoEuropean. Now, I don't know what genetic markers they use to determine one ethnicity from another. Also we can only inherit so much from each ancestor.

Tanners from Hardin County, KY and later in Bradley County, TN

I am looking for more info on lineage of John Franklin Tanner b 6/25/1880 in Hardin County KY (near Lebanon Junction) and died 2/7/1965 in Bradley County, TN. His father was John H Tanner and mother was Henrietta Graham; she apparently had been married before and her name at time of their marriage was Hutchason (or Hutchinson). She had a daughter, Sarah, and son William from her first marriage. John H and Henrietta had 3 sons - George Washington Tanner, John F Tanner, and Lee Tanner. GW was killed in 1927 while working for the L&N RR, John moved to TN around 1900, and Lee had an accident and was put in an asylum and died there.

Tanners from Smith Co, MS to Richland Parish, LA (Nelson to Benj. to Joe C)???

Am tracing back the family of Joe C Tanner & wife Mittie A and family found on the 1930 Richland Parish, LA census (Image 18 of 29 @ Ancestry.com's online census records). This record shows that Joe and both his parents were born in MS. Joe was born in 1885 on this census. His wife in 1930 & 1920 says she was b 1888.

In 1920, I have J C Tanner b 1882 MS and wife MA (b 1888 as she states in 1930) with their family. Key to tracing this line is that they have a child, Tracy, b 1909-10 MS.

Checking the 1910 MS census, I find a couple I think is them but the writing isn't very clear. They're in District 108, Beat 1, Smith Co, MS in household 183/183:
Joseph C 27 married 4 yrs (b 1883), wife whose name isn't exactly clear and appears to be Mattie 19 and a son whose name ends in "cy" with at least 3 letters in front of it who might be 4 months old (writing not the best).

NOW......

If this is the correct family, then they are easily followed in Smith Co, MS on earlier census records.

The 1900 Smith Co, MS census shows Jos C b Jul 1882 aged 17 as a child in household 165/167 Benj Tanner (MS SC AL) aged 42 Jan 1858, wife Sarah Ann 40 Jul 1859 married 21 yrs with 6 children & all 6 living and in the house with them. In 164/166 is Jno N Tanner and family; 166/168 Nelson C Tanner & family; 167/179 Charles Tanner & family. The 4 men appear to be brothers or at the very least closely related.

The 1880 Smith Co, MS census (looking for Benjamin Tanner), reveals 259/259 the household of W N Tanner 62 b SC, wife ME 51 b AL with a number of children among whom is a son B A aged 24 (1856).

1870 Smith Co, MS finds 19/19 Nelson Tanner 52 b SC, wife Elizabeth 42 b AL, and children Wm T 21, Charles W 20, Mary A L 14, Benj A 12, Nelson A 8, John N 6, Sarah E 2 & Susanah 2 months. All living next door to Chas G B Eubanks 45 b AL (brother or relative of Elizabeth?)

1860 Smith Co, MS contains 22 Tanners including that in 750/750:
Nelson Tanner 39 SC
Elizabeth 28 AL
William T 11 MS
Charles W 10
Mary A E 8
James L 6
Benj. A 4
Aaron 3
Martha A 1
The family of Thomas Tanner 35 is found next door in 749/749.

1850 Smith Co, MS finds 468/468 William Tanner 30, wife Elizabeth 22 AL, children William 2 & Charles 9/12 both b MS. This definitely appears to be the same family as that found in the same location in 1860.

Am I following this line correctly from Richland Parish, LA to Smith Co, MS?????

All help is much appreciated!

Lisa

Anyway, we are related! Wasn't sure about Seelina's spelling, scene it spelled a few ways on different peoples family tree's. I noticed doing my tree that some of my great grandparents had the same grandparents. Back then it was normal to marry your cousin, luckily things have changed!

This thread is old, but I have made a connection with both Tanner families in Warren, TN.
Daniel Tosh & William Tanner are oldest & youngest brothers; sons of John & Susan Tanner (Warren census: John: 1820 & 1830; Susan: 1840, 1850, 1860. Daniel is not listed by name because he married and is listed as separate household in 1850.

I believe that John Tanner, the patriarch of Warren Co is John Peter Tanner, son of George Michael Tanner (1732-1807) who immigrated from Waldorf, Germany.

I believe the lack of conclusive data (marriage records etc) from Rutherford, NC is due to the fact that John married a Cherokee girl (Susan, possible dau of Tosh); therefore there is no record of marriage. I have found complete marriage records for all of John's brothers & sisters, but not John.

I would like to work with any Tanner researchers who trace back to Warren, TN.

I lost all my family information in Hurrican Katrina and have not had time to get it back together. T.E. was my Grandpa's brother. And Herman was my daddy's first cousin. I knew both of them when I was a child. My grandpa was Mitchell Maxwell Tanner. I think Ester was Herman's sister. But could be wrong. I do remember a Ester Tanner. My sister Joan has more records she is in Marietta, Ga. Her email address is jtgen@mindspring.com
