My son-in-law is a Tanner descendent from Alma. I have done quite a bit of gathering of information on the Tanners of the area. I have Mitchell Maxwell in my database but not T. E.. Can you provide more information on him?

Mitchell Maxwell is a 3rd cousin 2X removed of my son-in-law.

I lost all my family information in Hurrican Katrina and have not had time to get it back together. T.E. was my Grandpa's brother. And Herman was my daddy's first cousin. I knew both of them when I was a child. My grandpa was Mitchell Maxwell Tanner. I think Ester was Herman's sister. But could be wrong. I do remember a Ester Tanner. Adolphus Harrison Tanner was born 1851 in New York State. He moved to Neosho County, Kansas. He was living in Erie, KS, during the 1930 census but was no longer living in 1935. His wife was in Erie in 1935, and died some time after that. They are both buried in Neosho County, KS. I need obits for both of them. If you can help find obits for them, please contact me. I think this Aaron Wesley Tanner is my great uncle. His brother John William Tanner would be my grandfather. My father Ralph Allen Tanner is John's son. One of my uncles names is Wesley Tanner

Lizzie was born on the 16th June 1889 in Coxwell Street, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Her Father was Charles Tanner a Groom and her Mother was Mary Tanner formerly Cottrell. On the 23rd July 1918 Lizzie married my First Cousin, Once removed Frank Elliott Webber in St. Stephens Church, East Twickenham, Middlesex. At the time of her marriage she appears to have been living and probably working in London.

I always new Lizzie as Aunt Edie until she died in November 1965. I would like to find out more about her early life and the time leading up to her marriage. Eventually she and husband Frank retired to Teignmouth, Devon.

If anyone has my Lizzie in their tree I would be glad to hear from them.

My gg grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Tanner, b.7 Aug 1844, in Ga, not sure but I think Crawford Co, d. 5 Aug 1932 in La, buried in Weldon Cemetery in Claiborne/Union Ph. married my gg grandfather William John Stewart (1840-1924, also buried Weldon) in Choctaw Co, Ms. Don't have their marriage date. Their family moved to Summerfield, Claiborne Ph. abt. 1879-1885, had 6 children.

Sarah E. Tanner was daughter to Lewis Jackson Tanner (1814-1860) & Susan Williford (sp?) (1822-1860). I only know of 1 sibling, Lewis Washington Tanner (1846-1920) m. Amanda Honey (1854-1896), both buried in Pine Grove cem in Union Ph, La.

Lewis Jackson Tanner was s/o Lewis G. Tanner, b.? d. 3 Sep 1842 & Sarah Jackson.

I would like to hear from anyone with info on the siblings of Sarah & Lewis W., as well as more on this Tanner line.

This is awesome! Thank you sooo much! Your research is beautiful. I think I had better ask you for lessons! George Augustus is the youngest son and my husbands Great Grand Father! He moved into Texas, settled and married. It seems as though several of the Tanner's moved into Texas. I guess, as with the Carolina's, then Georgia, then Mississippi & Louisiana: the family always stayed close. George Augustus married Sarah Elizabeth Cox. They settled in Wolf City Texas and had Clarence, Jessie (a girl), Carl & Max (my husbands Grandpa). I would love to exchange email addresses with you. Joseph Bradford; discharged in Columbus, Ga, 12 Jul 1836. He applied for a Federal Land Grant of 40 acres on 8 Nov 1850 in Macon Co., Al. Although the tombstone shows his name to be LEVEN, I believe it to be misspelled. The court records of Crawford Co. all spell his name Levin during the time he spent on Jury duty and as county commissioner.
The 1870 census of Choctaw co., Miss. shows Leven and Elizabeth on page #2 living in residence #11 of Township 17, Range 7. All the kids have left, died or got married except three. "Benjamen", age 21 born in Ala., George, age 16, and Sarah age, 14. This entry is a mystery since there is no Benjamen on the 1860 census, so it is unknown whether he was left off the 1860 census or if he is a boarder living in the house. Also on the 1860 census George is listed as the youngest child 4 years younger than Sarah. In the 1870 census, Sarah is listed as 5 years younger than George.
Also 1860 slave schedule shows Levin to have 3 slaves as follows: 1 female age 40, black1 HIST 1 male age 14, black 1 female age 10, black1 HIST

I'm looking for descendents of Thomas Hines Williford of Crawford Co., GA. He is on the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census' as Hines Williford. 1st wife Martha, m. 1838, with children: B.C.(E?), William, Hines, Emily, Sarah Ann, and Isabelle. 2nd wife, Nancy Rickerson (dau. of Abraham Rickerson and Susannah Ogletree) and child Micajah Whitfield Williford (my g-grandfather). Thomas Hines probably had as brother Micajah Williford who married Elizabeth Ogeltree and as sisters Susan Williford, m. Lewis Tanner, and Penna Williford, m. David Braswell, all m. in Crawford Co. around 1837-9. Book on Ricketson family states that Hines Williford, m. to Nancy Rickerson, did not know his parentage and was raised by a man named Nehner - could he have been an orphan who received land in the GA land lotteries? 1850 census states birthplace as NC. Suspect a connect to Sampson Co, NC, Willifords due to similarity in family names. Look familiar to any Williford researchers? Any help appreciated and I'm very willing to share what I have.

After the death of Matilda in 1870, Thomas returned to Choctaw Co., Ms (Sep 1871) and married the widow of Johnathan Dickerson, Matilda's brother. Thomas helped establish the Alabama Methodist Church in Claiborne Parish, La.

I seem to have vague memories of reading something somewhere that said Lewis and wife died in a flood while traveling into Mississippi....does that sound right to you?

Lewis Jackson had 8 other brothers and sisters. One of them was Levin Tanner, another was Thomas. Levin and family moved through Alabama and into Mississippi after they lost their land to debt in Georgia. Lewis Senior moved with Levin and Thomas into Mississippi then passed in 1842. They moved to Mississippi because it was being opened up to white settlers.....
Yes, some of Lewis' family moved on into Louisiana....

I'm pretty sure your kin to my husband! I don't have all the information you have, but everything else sure seems to fit. What do ya think?

Lewis Jackston Tanner b. abt. 1815 Georgia son of Lewis Tanner and Sarah Jackson and D. July 11, 1860 Lowndes Co., Ga. married Susan Williford daughter of Benjamin Williford and Charity Cobb. They had 8 children that I know about. Permelia Tanner, James M. Tanner, Sarah Tanner, Lewis Washington Tanner, John R. Tanner married Armintie Mitcham, William Franklin Tanner married Martha Mitcham, L. M. Tanner and Henry Jackson Tanner. I don't show that any were born in Mississippi. All died in Louisiana. My daughter-in-law comes from William Franklin Tanner.

Argh! I need to think clearly before I post. Lavern and Hazel weren't divorced by 1954... because they didn't marry each other until 1960. Sorry about that. So Betty was Lavern's wife before Hazel.

In correction of my previous note. Lavern Tanner and Hazel (Withee) divorced by 1954 (not 1976) because Lavern married again in 1954. Here are three additional marriage records from the Washington Digital archives:

On this record, LaVern's date of birth is listed as 5-8-13 and Betty's is 10-29-20

Interestingly, there is a second marriage of the same couple three months later:

Lavern A Tanner married Hazel (Withee) Goodway on July 2, 1960 in Clark County Washington. Both were residents of Washington County Oregon at the time of their marriage. It was at least a third marriage for her (Married Harry L Chittester in 1929, and Orlean Vernon Goodway probably in the early 1940s).
