Association Will Meet on August 13,2005
****************************************************
The annual meeting of the association will be held at 10:30AM on the 13th of August 2005 at the Moselle Community Center. The John Shows Family Association has the objectives of perpetuating the memory of John Shows, note achievements of the Shows Family, and to encourage genealogical, historical and biographical research. Please E mail me for a map to the Community Center. All descendants and interested persons are encouraged to attend. As with past meetings, we will exchange information, tell family stories and have the opportunity to meet some new cousins. Memorabilia and pictures are always welcomed. These activities will be followed by our traditional potluck dinner, so family groups are encouraged to bring a small covered dish.

The 2004 Meeting
Last year’s meeting of the Association was attended by 23 descendents and was initially presided over by the Association President Pat Shows. At the 2003 meeting Pat had expressed a desire to pass on his duties. The first new business was the election of some new group officers. Danny Shows was elected the new President, a new Vice President and Secretary were also elected. The group thanked Pat for his many years of service.
The Association expenses in 2004 included the mowing of the grass at the John Shows Memorial and the fee for using the Moselle Community Center. Donations at the 2004 meeting should cover the 2005 costs of these items.
A discussion about the condition of “the old John Shows Cemetery” site concluded that the graves have been abandoned for many years, and only fragments of tombstones can be seen. There is to be an effort to contact the current property owner to perhaps further search the site, document and try to rescue any remaining grave objects. There may exist old photos of the cemetery or home that would be of great interest to the group.
There was also a remarkable discussion about the whereabouts of the John Shows Bible. Several people in the family have expressed serious interest in obtaining high quality copies. Pete Baucum described her considerable efforts to locate this bible. She tracked it to Baton Rouge, LA, and talked to a woman who claimed to have it. After going there she was completely disappointed not actually getting to see this very important part of history. If anyone has information as to the location of this bible please let us know.
Pete Baucum also displayed a very
outstanding handmade quilt revealing a tree of her family group. She clearly spent a great deal of time making this work of art, and would consider making others. Please contact her for details.
Recent meetings have been primarily attended by descendants of Cornelius Holmes Sr. The group wants to extend a special welcome to descendents of John and Mary Nancy’s other children: Adam, John Jr., James, Mary Nancy, Sarah and Daniel. We would like to see representation of as many of their children as possible. Please make plans to attend if you are a descendent of one of these other children.

Family News
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the past year the family lost Albert B. Shows former president of the Association, Albert attended last years meeting and gave a farewell to the group. A descendant of Cornelius Holms Sr., he will be deeply missed.

Everyone should know about the John Shows Family Association web site that Tresa Tayrek has been kind enough to establish and maintain for the family:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tresa/Shows/index.htm
This site has links to a huge amount of information and has been expertly maintained. There are also links to family genealogy that would allow almost any cousin to connect to their ancestry.
