Sorry, I did not read your message prior to sending the information about Carroll Co., IL. We just stopped there on Saturday and found little as they were there early in that county.

I think we are dealing with the same families. There are some Civil War letters at Western Michigan University that just might deal with some of the people mentioned. The letters are from George Martin White to his wife Enfield Viana Bates. My husband and I have to go over the letters again as we were searching for names on the Bates side. If we find anything regarding the Shays, we will post that information on this site. The Whites were from Branch Co., MI and they sent numerous letters back and forth.

I just found this information in the genealogy center in Ottawa, IL:
American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) Daniel McCain Birth Date: 1800 Birthplace: Michigan, Illinois Volume: 113 Page Number: 63 Reference: Hist. Of LaSalle Co., Il., a sketch if the pioneer settler of each town to 1840. By Elmer Baldwin. Chicago, 1877. (552p.):443 (Need to get a copy of this page)
pg 443: Daniel McCain, from Michigan, married Sarah Shay; died 1840; the widow married William Perygo; after his death she went to Michigan. Stephen Shay (brother?) died in Michigan

Sarah Shay would easily be called Sally in those years. My husband is a descendant of Sarah A. Shay who married Daniel McCain Sr. 10 Apr 1836 in Branch Co., MI, Daniel died 16 Mar 1843 in La Salle Co., IL; Sarah then married William Perygo (Perrigo) on 27 Feb 1844 in LaSalle Co., IL. William Perrigo died ca 1849 in Eagle Twp., LaSalle, IL; Her third marriage was to Chester Bates on 2 Jan 1853 Batavia, Branch, MI. We are trying to track her siblings and her offspring and have some results if anyone wants to contact us at ardis@mei.net

Re: shay

Thanks for writing this information. I had the names of 9 the children but not all 13. I didn't have Jane, Elizabeth,David, Seers or Phoebe, you don't have Sallie. Her information came from a Long biography. I have Charlotte ( who m. Samuel Wesley Goss) born on Sept. 3, 1820 in Seneca Co. NY. bur. Oak Park Cem., Mondovi, WI. Sallie b 1824, Seneca m. Joseph F. Long of Luzerne Co. PA and Eliza b 1840,Luzerne Co. m James Moslander of Mason Co. IL. According to his biography, Sarah and 2nd husband came to Mason Co in 1855 and 10 of their children had lived to adulthood.
Now I am wondering whether your Charles had the middle name "George". I found in the 1860 Mason Co. census a James Wandell, 70, b PA, Sarah 50 or 56, b NY (She was born Feb. 1800 NY in my info) Charles, 26, b PA and George Shay, age 16, born PA. I am thinking that James had a son, Charles Wandell, and rather than have 2 named Charles in the household, your Charles got called by his second name for a period of time ? The age is about right.
And thanks for the Wendall/Wandell name-I didn't have that. But it is a common name in Luzerne Co. and several in the Pennsylvania township of Mason Co in the 1850s and 1860s.
Another problem is the birthdate of the Jane that you mentioned. Jane and Charlotte could not both have been born in 1820. Are you sure of that date? I have dates of the other siblings that I mentioned, if you are interested.
Thanks again for the help and I's appreciate any further information .
Neva

William's father was Timothy Shay of Voluntown, Conn who died 1762/63. Upon Timothy's death Samuel Stewart became guardian to Timothy. In 1771, presumably when mother Catherine died, Timothy and Mary asked for John Stewart to be their guardian. Information form "Somewhere in Time" by Renee M. Zamora on freepages. Please let me know if you have information on Wm's son Seers.

David Shay b1811 who married Rachel Ridgeway was the son of Isaac A Shay born ca1780 Maryland and his first (of three) wife, Harriet Clark born 1782 Ohio. David Shay's grandparents were John Shay born ca 1750 Maryland (or Ohio)and Barbara Lash/Loesch born ca1757 Sussex, NJ. John and Barbara Shay had a son, Israel David Shay born ca1779 who also seems to have used the name David Shay. This David Shay, with his sister Elizabeth Shay, and brother Isaac A Shay (my ancestor through his son Isaac Agustus b1836) moved to Tazewell Co, Illinois after their father's estate was probated. Two more sisters, Sarah 'Sally' Shay m. William Norris, and Ann 'Polly' Shay m. Robert McFarland, and a brother Abraham Shay, all settled in Illinois. I have no information on the remaining children of John & Barbara Shay: Rebecca, Mary, John, and Catherine.

It has a copyright so I can't have it copied. I guess she thought know one in the future would be interested in her book.
In point of fact, we do have it spelled Shax but we ahve always believed that to be a misspelling of Shay, which in Ireland would likely have been spelled Shea or O'Shea.

May I ask how you are related?

I have never seen the Brennan family associated with Co. Meath, and I have quite a bit of data on them.
I do have a copy of Pat Walsh and Briget Brennan's marriage certificate from Schagticoke, NY in 1851.

I know that most of the family of that generation (Pat and Bridget and many of their kids and their spouses) are buried in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rantoul.

Sincere thanks,
Chris Walsh.

Could the last name be Shax? My ancestors Patrick Walsh (born 1818) and mother Catherine (Shax) sailed from (Co Carlow) Ireland in early 1850's. Patrick married Bridget Brennan (from Co Meath)after arriving in US. Families finally settled in Springfield IL, Catherine is buried near Springfield. FAmily bought property nearby in Rantoul, IL in 1867. Patrick and Bridget are both buried in Rantoul, IL.

Yes, I knew her. We'd dated in Oklahoma City and through her return to Oregon, from about 1985 through 1994. I lost track of her at that point. She was facing some severe constant pain issues from a lifting-injury while nursing up there, a fear she may no longer be with us. She'd spoke of wanting to be buried in Portland's 'Rose Garden' cemetary if it came to that. Might be a research start. Ralf Kittenbacher

Cordelia "Delia" Currier, b. Sep 1851 in Vermont, wife of Daniel P Shea (Shay) of Lowell

Looking for information on Cordelia Currier (she was known as Delia), born in or about September 1851 in Vermont (have no further information about her place of birth, but I believe from Census documents that both of her parents were also born in Vermont.) In around 1882, she married Daniel P. Shea, b. Jun 1848 in Ireland; they resided in Lowell, MA. Delia Currier Shea (or Shay as the family spelled the name in more recent years) may have been married previously, as the 1910 census indicates a step-daughter named Maud Shannon living with the family (although since Ms. Shannon is listed as married, I do not know what her maiden name was and therefore what Delia Currier's first husband's surname was.) She died 20 Jan 1924 in Lowell and is buried there. From census documents, I have gathered that she had 12 children, of which around 6 survived into adulthood. These include James H Shay born abt Mar 1883; Daniel Francis Shay, born 10 Dec 1887; Margaret or Maggie Shay Couillard, born May 1890, and Mary Shay McNeil, plus Maud Shannon, born Apr 1878.

I am looking for any information about where she was born, who her parents and siblings were, etc.. I have some further information about her descendants that I would be very happy to share.

Many thanks!

I am thrilled to see your post on Isaac Augustus and Benjamin Shay. We must have a very close connection.

I am unsure who Benjamin Shay married but I know that Benjamin Shay had a son named Theodore Albert Shay I.

Theodore Albert Shay the first married Florence Elizabeth Elnora Gillespie. They had three kids - Vera, Edward, and Theodore II (my father). Unfortunately Florence (Gillespie) Shay died at 29 at Exeter California and her husband died at 44 at Wawawai Washington, leaving the kids as orphans.

My father, Theodore Albert Shay the second, married Margaret Helen Miller and they had three kids: Vicki, Theodore III and Michael.

Do you know the name of Benjamin's wife? What is your connection to this family, and to Joshua Shay? I would love to hear from you.

Vicki (Shay) Larrabee
Vicki_Larrabee@Yahoo.com

Michael Shay Norwich, CT b. 1840

I am looking for info on Michael Shay's children born in Norwich, CT between 1862-67. Michael's mother (Bridget Carey Shay) and sisters (Bridget, Mary and Hannah) preceded him to the U.S. in the 1850s, when they came to work as weavers in the mills in Norwich. Michael O'Shea of Waterville, County Kerry married Bridget Dunne of KildareTown, County Kildare in Tralee, April 1861. When they came to Norwich they took the name Shay as had his mother and sisters. Sometime between thier marriage and Septembr 1862, when Michael joined the 26th CT Inf.,and April 1867 when they had child #5, Hannah, in Troy, NY; they had 4 other children. I have found Mary who showed up in the 1880 census of Troy. They remained Shay in 1870 and 1880 but 1885 NY Census it changed to Shea and stayed that way till his death in 1928. I haven't found records of brothers in Ireland and don't know if they came to U.S. or didn't exist. Four children usually is a small family in Ireland in 1830-40 era. Any help someone can give finding these other three children will be greatly appreciated.

obit fyi - Lucille Elizabeth SHAY , 1921 WI. - 2007 CA.

not related - for your info only

Shay, Lucille Elizabeth

Lucille Elizabeth Shay Oct. 2, 1921- July 9, 2007 Our family lost another one if its beloved patriots with Lucille's passing. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lou was active in sports, especially women's softball and bowling. She also took an interest in all things mechanical. She loved taking things apart but was not always able to put them back together to father Joe's frequent consternation. Lucille dropped out of high school to work and save her money for flying lessons. Her dream was to join the Air Force and become an aviator. Unfortunately her poor eyesight kept her from realizing her ambition. When WW II broke out s he enlisted in the Woman's Air Corps and served in the European theater and was stationed at Bovington, England. Lucille joyfully recounted how Glen Miller and his orchestra would play at the base. After the war Lucille and her parents moved to Bellflower, CA where they maintained a small farm along the San Gabriel River raising horses and cattle. Lou went on to earn her GED at night school. With the death of her parents, Lucille sold the farm, moved to Leucadia, CA and built a beautiful home by the sea to be close to her sister, Jean. Lou was a member of the Bellflower Presbyterian Church, Equestrian Trails and Senior Citizens. Throughout her rich life, Lucille was a caregiver to her family, country and her many friends including animals. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Shay. She is survived by her sisters, Jean Shirey and Marion Hinze; nephews, Stephen Hinze (Debra) and Jonathan Hinze (Julie); and great nieces, Kambria and Kellie. Contributions may be sent to Cal Farley's Boys Town, local SPCA or Disabled Veterans of America in her memory.
Published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram on 9/18/2007.
