Bettiejane Brown Shade, 55,
of 45 Back St., Montoursville,
died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 8, 1953 in Lock Haven, the daughter of the late George S. and Marian Bauman Brown.

She was a 1971 graduate of Lock Haven High School and a graduate of Lock Haven University.

She was employed as a social worker for the Center for Independent Living of Williamsport before becoming unable to work due to health issues. She was an avid bingo player.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas A. Shade Jr. of Lock Haven and Jason M. Shade of Montoursville; two brothers, George S. Brown Jr. of Dunnstown and Robert Young of Hughesville;
six sisters, Maude Zerby of Jersey Shore, Barbara McCulley of Scranton, Terry Seyler of Lock Haven, Sandy Englert of Howard, Dottie Brown of Castanea and Deb Bolin of Lock Haven; and two grandsons, Devin and Austin Shade.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Shawn and Brandon.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 20, 2009 at 7 p.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, with Major Sandy Ammerman officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until the time of services Monday.

My dad was Samuel C. Shade, Sr. My grandfather was O. B. Shade and his father was Crhistopher Columbus Shade. I am familiar with the run away wagon incident. Would like to see the clipping if you can e-mail it to me. CCS is buried at Mt. Carmel Church in Glengary, WV. O. B. and Nanny are buried in the old cemetary next to Martinsburg High School, Martinsburg, WV.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Schlater Funeral Home, 1620 Indianapolis Blvd., Whiting, with the Rev. Jasper Cox of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Whiting Lodge 3, F&AM will conduct services at the chapel at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Surviving are his wife Emma; two daughters, Ellen Louise and Sharon; and his mother, Mrs. Edith Shade, Whiting.

A lifetime resident of Whiting, he was also a member of Whiting Lodge of Elks. He was proprietor of the Shade Coal Co.

A retired Standard Oil Co. employee, William C. Shade, 73, 1442 Brown Ave., Whiting, died Saturday in St. Anthony hospital at Michigan City following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Schlater funeral home, 1620 Indianapolis Blvd., Whiting. Rev. Hilton Whitaker will officiate. Burial will be at Ridgelawn Cemetry, Gary.

Shade was a member of Lodge 696 of the IOOF in Whiting, the Sons and Daughters of Liberty and the Standard Oil Annuitants club.

Surviving are the widow, Edith;
a son, Edward;
a sister, Mrs. Erma Overstreet of Colorado Springs, Colo., and two grandchildren.

She was born to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Arnold and ?? Miller but raised by her grandfather John T. Arnold in Hancock Co. OH while mother (Lizzie) was in school. Grant U. Shade is Maggie's second marriage.

Mrs. Thompson was born April 29, 1934 in Shelby, N.C., a daughter of Wilbert and Idella Kilgore Shade.
She had worked as a bartender in various lounges, retiring in 1996. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family. She attended the Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.
Her husband, Willie James Thompson, whom she married in 1955, passed away March 16, 1960.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Gwen Dorsey of Houston; her sister, Nellie McElroy of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Janerio and Cherelle Dorsey; two great-grandchildren, Melvin Smith and Jaden Labore; Payton and Amy Lee whom she reared; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Her parents; a sister, Cora Shade; and a brother, Hubert Shade, preceded her in death.
Friends may call Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Does anyone out there have documentation or references showing a marriage between George Shade and Elizabeth Heslin?
George Shade was born 1792 in PA and died Jan 8, 1869 in Timber, Peoria County, IL. Some researchers give the location of George’s birth as Perry County (Cumberland at that time), PA, others give it as Clinton County, PA.
Elizabeth Heslin is reported as being born in Loyalsville, Luzerne County, PA.
Five children (Joseph, John, George, Elizabeth, Hannah) attributed to this marriage were all born in Perry County, PA from 1816 to 1825.
It is estimated that the marriage would have most likely taken place about 1815.
George later married Hannah Bauer and went on to have a large number of children by her.

At end of Civil War, she went to Dwight, IL in Livingston County. Married Charles Koehnlein 15 April 1866. Have you ever heard of this Shade family? Her parents were also born in PA.

I purchase a shoebox of vintage postcards at an estate sale a few years ago. Eight of the cards are to the Shade family. I deduced the following information. Most of the cards were mailed to Mrs. L K Shade in Bellefontaine Ohio, Dayton Ohio and Ft Wayne, Ind. The Ohio cards were mailed during 1907-1910. One was mailed to Guy Shade. Later a card was mailed to Mama and asks about Guy. Another card was mailed to Lollie Shade.....another is Dear Laura and Guy.If you think these people are your ancestors, please contact me.

It could well be a different family but in my research and documents that i have the spelling varies between Shade, Shades and Schades. My grandmother used Schades but my Mom's Birth cert states her mother as Shades. I got a lot of info from a 2nd cousin (Schades) that she got from the family bible. She says they were originally Schitz and settled in NY in the 1700's - 1760's from Holland. Fun stuff!
