I have recently been trying to contact your father, but have not been able to find a phone number for him. I knew your grandparents well. We were neighbors. Please reply to me.

Here is some info about a Daniel Ruark of MD who fits your timeframe. I have not researched this line and have no way of knowing whether this is the correct person. You will need to do additional research. If you haven't already, you should check out the MD deeds, which are online, to see if you find your Daniel selling land around the time you think he left MD. These early Ruarks were clustered in the Worcester Co, MD area.

Daniel Ruark b. c1763 Worcester Co, MD; d. 1838 Worcester Co, MD; son of Ezekiel Ruark and Rachel Esham. This Daniel Ruark left heirs James Ruark, William Ruark, DANIEL RUARK, Joel Ruark, Wheatley Ruark, and Mary Ann Ruark. If Daniel Sr. was born in 1763, he could be the father of your Daniel b. c1789. Good luck.

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 27 September 1890...

Drowned in a Tub

Hot Springs, September 22 - A heart rendering accident happened yesterday afternoon at about three o'clock at the Mellard place in the lower end of the city,in which the eighteen month old boy baby of Mr. and Mrs. John Ruark lost its life. The child was playing about the yard as usual, and it is supposed climbed upon a tub and fell over its edge into the water. Upon being missed and a hunt instituted, the poor little child was found in the water dead. Every effort was made by the distracted parents to resuscitate the baby, but without avail.

Shadrack RUARK - Correction on parents

I have been showing Shadrack RUARK as a son of John and Mary Driscoll RUARK. With additional clues provided to me by Pam Pearson, it is now apparent that is incorrect. Shadrack is the only son and heir of James RUARK and Elizabeth LINGOE. James is the brother of John RUARK.

Shadrack is first mentioned in Worcester Co. records in 1783 tax records in Quenpoco, with no land and his father James owning Lamberson's Venture.

He is next found serving as estate administrator for James RUARK in 1786, and in 1789 land records show he sells 46 acres of Lamberson's Venture to Stephen White, and the deed refers to Shadrack as the son and only heir of James RUARK. At that time, Shadrack is married to Rebecca.

Many thanks to Pam for helping set this record straight.

Gene Rooks, Gotha, Florida

DEAR MR. BERG, I am still trying to trace the parents of Hanson Kelly Ruark, Sr. who lived in Smithville, NC, Brunswick County (now called Southport).
I wonder if you have made any headway in finding information. I saw in your various posts that you leaned toward Horry County, SC Ruarks with their various spellings. I have been to the Archives in Columbia, SC but did not find any information in the limited amount of time I had. I did find the John Ruark that lived in Horry County and had property there early in the history of the county. I also saw on the internet that the names Privette and Rabon are found in Horry County, SC - names also found in the Southport area.
Perhaps when H.K.Ruark,Sr. stated in the various early census of NC that he was born in NC he was referring to the time when NC and SC were one state and his parents did not make a difference. Perhaps they were from what is now SC. I found it interesting that there was a Gibbons name connected to Methodist pastors in the Horry County, SC area and there now lives a Gibbons Ruark in North Carolina....his works can be found on the internet search engine...he is a writer like one of his "cousins" Robert Chester Ruark.
With all the various diseases taking toll on populations, shipwrecks, hurricanes, burnings of county courthouses, and the Civil War, it is a wonder we find any records....

I do see from various records that Hanson Kelly Ruark, Sr. was supposedly born between 1808 and 1812 and that he died shortly after the 1880 US Census, where he was living with his wife Rebecca Ann Woodside Ruark in Smithville. My husband's widowed grandmother and children were living with them at the time. I believe Rebecca Ann Woodside Ruark died around 1888 before the 1900 Census, which might have told us something more.

I have found the name "Hanson" in various family lines in and around the southeastern NC area in New Hanover County, Brunswick County, and Pender County. I believe perhaps Hanson Kelly Ruark, Sr. was named for a very successful and prominent business man: Hanson Kelly who was involved in shipping to Maryland and elsewhere and who eventually moved to Pensacola , Florida area and was even postmaster there for a while.
He must have been a good bit older than H.K.Ruark,Sr. and thus a kind of "Godfather" to him...for the family to have used his name. Perhaps the family were Episcopalians, a Church which follows the custom of having godfathers and godmothers at the Christening of babies. I do wish I could find some of those records in Wilmington or elsewhere!

At present I have written NARA for copies of the records of H.K.Ruark,Sr. petition to the Southern Claims Commission for compensation for damages and loss during the Civil War. The petition/claim was denied. I hope perhaps some family information will be found in those records. According to a book in our local library, there perhaps may be additional information.

Thank you for any help,

Sincerely,

Jean M. Coleman
Lenoir, NC

olin@puritanproject.com

Mary Catherine Ruark, daughter of Hanson Kelly Ruark, Sr. married first a William E. Carr - a widower with children. He died and she and the children can be found in the 1880 US Census (LDS free site) living with her father and his family in Smithville, Brunswick County, NC. She second married Franklin James Anders, a widower with a large family. He was a farmer in Bladen County, NC and a Civil War Veteran. He was captured at Bentonville, NC and taken prisoner to Point Lookout Prison, MD, but survived and after a stay in a hospital was returned home. His widow Mary Carr Anders applied for a pension in Green Cove Springs, Clay County, Florida. It is unclear if she ever received a pension. She was living with a daughter and husband (Virginia Anders Dyson).

Mary Catherine Ruark was my husband's grandmother. His mother was Annie Mildred Anders (married Jamieson Olin Coleman (all now deceased).

Mary Catherine (Ruark, Carr) Anders and Franklin James Anders had three children together:

Virginia Anders
William Gladstone Anders
and Annie Mildred Anders

Mary Catherine Ruark saw the Battle of Ft. Fisher across the Cape Fear River during the Civil War. She was about 12 years old. The only remnant of the Prices Creek Lighthouse (the house had one light above it, another down by the River) is the lighthouse by the Cape Fear River, which can be seen from the Ferry from Southport to Ft. Fisher. The lighthouse was deactivated by the Federal Government.

Hanson Kelly Ruark, Sr. (H.K. Ruark- not H. R. as reported in some documents) was also named Hanson Roward in some census records.
H.K. Ruark, Sr. was g.grandfather to my husband (now deceased).
He was Prices Creek lighthouse keeper in Smithville, NC (Now Southport, NC) during the Civil War and applied for compensation from the Southern Claims Commission in 1876, but his claim was denied. I would be most interested in the Bible records that you mentioned, and the fact that you believe the family orginally came from Germany. Most descendants believe the family to be from Ireland with various spellings. It is said that H.K.Ruark,Sr. family "came up from South Carolina" but I have never found any proof.
Until now, no one has found his parents names or his siblings. He did marry Rebecca Ann Woodside and had the large family you cited. Various records say he was born anywhere from 1808 - 1812 in North Carolina. The census records always mention NC as place of birth.
