I don't believe there is a Rybicki within this family. Of course I could be wrong... Unfortunately, I don't have much info on the Rotella or Chiarella branches. My mother-in-law Florence Chiarella Tuele provided what info I have. She had a sister Rose who was born 3/5/1913 here in the states. Mary was born in Italy in 1901 and died 8/23/1923. Mom's brother Frank was born in the states 5/8/08, but I don't know where.

Just read your message. Am trying to find information regarding my grandfather, Frank Chiarella, and his family. My father is Donald Joseph Chiarella and was born in NYC in 1934. He never knew his father, but heard of an Aunt Rose and Mary. My father's mother's name was Estelle Rybicki. Could this be the Frank Chiarella in your message? Please respond as I'm clueless.

Dear Maria,
My name is Rita McDonald and I am researching my grandfather Bruno Rotella. I think he came from Calabria but am not sure from what town. He was born around 1871. He married Rosina Benincasa who was from Sambiase. He came to America in 1903 and settled in Scottdale, Pennsylvania which is a suburb of Pittsburgh, I think. He supposedly died in or around 1906. I don't have any other info about him except he had a brother whose daughter was Peppina which is also my mother's name. She supposedly married a Vittorio Pileggi and settled in the northern part of Italy. What peaked my curiosity was the fact that your great great grandfather settled in Pittsburgh.

I think he was born in Calabria in 1871. He had a brother whose name I don't know. His brother had a daughter Peppina which was also my mother's name. Bruno's niece, Peppina married a Vittorio Pileggi and moved to the north of Italy. Bruno married Rosina Benincasa from Sambiase, Calabria. He went to America on the Citta di Napoli in 1903 to Scottdale, Pa. He supposedly died from pneumonia or influenza a few years later.

I don't know anything at all about the Rotella family except that my great great grandfather Francesco Cappellano married a Maria Rotella. He was born abt 1866 in Sambiase, Cantanzaro, Italy. I know he came to the US a few times and the last time I trace him thru Ellis Island was in 1910, but his wife Maria had still remained in Italy. I believe her parent's names are Nicola Rotella and Regenia (Virginia).

If anyone has any information on the Rotellas from Cantanzaro, please contact me. My family mainly ended up in Pittsburgh, PA.

thank you,
Stacy
Gilbert, AZ

I don't have anything on Tomasso and Anna Rotella. The info I have is on Francesco Rotella (son of Pasquale Rotella) born 6 Dec 1873 in Settingiano, who married Mariana Comita from Caraffa di Catanzaro, and their descendants, and then I have info from headstones for all the Rotellas and Comitas in the Settingiano cemetery as of October 2003, but of course, those who emigrated aren't bured there! I don't know the siblings of Francesco, so it is possible we are related. Do you know Tomasso's parents?

They came to the US around 1886 with their children. I know there were 2 boys names Joseph(english) and Antonio. I would appricate any info you may have. Thanks in advance.
Lois

I have no family in Brazil by blood, and never have. But I was an exchange student there and lived with a family who have become my family in my heart! There are some good Calabrese Italians in that extended family, too, the D'Alessandro family in Brasilia.

Have a great research trip. If it turns out that any of your Rotellas are from Settingiano, please let me know and we can try to patch our family trees together. Before you go, by all means, if you haven't read it, read Mark Rotella's book, Stolen Figs, about the Rotella family in nearby Gimigliano (or however you spell it).

Abracos,
Chris

Eu sou da California, bem gringa, mas eu adoro o Brasil.

My Rotella great-grandparents came from Settingiano, a lovely town in Catanzaro province. I went there two years ago and did research on them, and copied names from cemeteries, etc. But I don't have Vicenzo Rotella from the 1880s. A great resouce before your trip is Il Circulo Calabrese, online.

Boa sorte.
Chris

I have saved your message wanting to send a follow-up e-mail to find out if you made the trip and what you were able to find out. You see, my husband is from Settingiano. I have lots of photos and I believe he could possibly be of some help. His Grandfather, Great Uncle and a first uncle immigrated to Minneapolis around 1902. His Grandfather and Great Uncle are both buried in Minneapolis. We have been unable to locate their graves when we have visited there.

You can reach us at (818) 700-6969. My husband's name is Tevere (after the Tiber River) but most of us call him Vic (his middle name is Vittorio).
Rotella - Comita Families in Calabria

I will be travelling to Calabria very soon in search of family roots regarding my great-grandparents, Francesco Rotella, born in what I show as Settingiano, Catanzaro, Calabria 6 Dec. 1873, and Marianna Comita, born in Catanzaro 15 Aug. 1876. They married in Italy and emigrated to Minnesota (US) just before my grandmother was born in 1902.

I've been reading Mark Rotella's Stolen Figs and Other Adventures in Calabria (fascinating) and see that most Rotellas were from Gimigliano. Does anyone know anything about Rotellas from Catanzaro or anything at all about Settingiano, which I can't find on a map?

I've also found a picture of a house the Comita family lived in in the mid-1800s at Piazza Comita, "Caraffi." Again, it's a very cool picture, but I'm not sure where the house is located, and I'd love to know so I can go see it.

Mille grazie!

Researching Rotella family

I am currently doing some research on my husband's family history. We are trying to find any possible connections to others in the United States. Here is the information I have been able to obtain through other family members:
My husband's grandmother was Concetta Volpe Schaller.
Her parents were Arthur Anthony Volpe and Anna Rotella Volpe.
Anna Rotella Volpe's parents were Peter Rotella and Rosina Rotella (maiden name unknown). I am under the impression that the Rotella's could have possibly been from Sicily. However, I could be mistaken.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any information would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Rotella Family

Good day/evening,
My name is Anthony, I was on the internet at work and thought i would take a chance and type my mothers name in to see how many Rotella's there were and low and behold there were quite a few, to my surprise. In reading your email to him, i realized that my grandfather was born in Gimigliano, Italy also and he came to the USA in 1920 (the first time). and lived in the greater NY area for a number of years before moving to Chicago with his father. I was wondering if you knew any information on whether we might have some ancestors in common. My mother's name is Irene M. Rotella her father is Tomasso Rotella(Thomas when he changed it in the U.S.) he came to the US with his brother Bernardo Rotella they came to the U.S. from Gimigliano in 1920, Sept. 7th. There was another Rotella that was on the ship with them and her name was Nunziata Rotella(I don't know what relation though). Their Father's name is Luigi Rotella. We have relatives in upstate NY, California, Chicago, Ohio(joe is a cousin) and Canada. I found out that Joe is a cousin from my great Uncle Joey Rotella who was born here and the brother of my grandfather.
Tommaso 2nd wife Violanda Rizzo moved to Fresno and had 5 children;
Irene Mary Rotella(my mother) - Seattle - 206-760-1965
Maria Rotella - Fresno
Tomassina Rotella - Fresno
Thomas Rotella Jr. - Fresno
Caroline Rotella(Yates) - Ontario, Calif
***Tomasso(Thomas) has 2 Sons(older) from previous Marriage who live in chicago area(i think) - I will have more info later
Thank you for any assistance.
Universal Peace and Blessings

Hi. I noticed that you had Biamonte listed in your msg. I am trying to trace the Biamonte/Pongitory/Porri names in Tomkins Cove, NY. I was told that my Biamontes came from Calabria. I am guessing possibly Gimigliano because they lived next door to the Scozzafava family in Tomkins Cove and the families all worked at the quarry together. I am looking for a Luigi Biamonte, born 9/17/1883, in Calabria. His parents were Tommaso Biamonte and Maria Fragicomo(?). I know that Tommaso died about 1890 in NYC, then Luigi and Maria returned back to Italy. Luigi came back to NY about 1900 and settled in Tomkins Cove, NY. Maria died about 1945 in Italy. Do any of these names sound familiar? Any and all help is appreciated!! I would like to make some connections back to Italy if possible. Thanks,
Maureen

Hi Louis. Thanks for your reply!! I spoke to an uncle this weekend, Tommy Biamonte, (Luigi Biamonte's son) and he said the family definitely came from Gimigliano. I was also told that Luigi was the only child of Tommaso and Maria Biamonte. I would definitely be interested in the info from the Biamonte Family tree, please keep me in mind when you can get a copy. I really don't know much else, so any other info would be a great help. Maybe we are distant cousins.......(Actually, the Biamontes are my husband's family, but I am researching them and my own family so my children will know their ancestors.) Thanks again and please keep in touch. Sincerely, Maureen.

Hi, I tried to find the web site from the address you gave, but I could not get a web site. I am researching my Rotella family also. My great grandmother Mary (Gaglinese) Rotella is from Gimigliano, Catanzaro. Her husband was Antonio, known as Anthony here in the U.S. I know he was from the same area but I'm not sure of exactly where. I do know they lived after marriage in Tiriolo because that is where my grandfather Dominick was born. Anyway, I'm interested in the names listed on the passenger lists you found.

My grandmother, Maria Mauro, was born in Gimigliano in 1893. She came to America and married Graziano Critelli in 1911.

I have been to Tiriolo which is a tiny hill town about 8 miles below Gimigliano. Unfortunately, I never made it to Gimigliano. Everyone I met in Tiriolo is named Critelli which is my maiden name. However, Rotundo, Rotella, Critelli (very very common name in Catanzaro) seem to all be somehow related to one another in these tiny isolated hill towns.

My grandfather's cousin was Ambrogio Rotundo from Pointe Grande, Italy and they came to America together to work in the Sherman mine in Mineville, NY (Witherbee, Moriah, Port Henry area).

Anyway, I guess it just caught my eye that you were researching Critelli. Thanks. Mary Jo

My grandfather is Eustachio Rotella and lives in Gimigliano (catanzaro).
The brother of the father of my grandfather emigrated in Usa in 1910 (not sure) his name was Saverio Rotella. Some years later her sister joined him from Gimigliano. That's what I remember of grandfa's tales.
I have seen that many Rotella are looking for their origin.
I want only say ciao to all Rotella in Usa.
Tiziana
