John Rank, Ohio - Civil War era

Hello, Ranks --

While sorting through some old papers and photographs belonging to my mother, I came across two Civil War documents for John Rank. The first is his promotion to 3rd Corporal of Company D of the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as of September 1st, 1864. The second is his discharge dated June 6th, 1865.

His discharge states that he mustered in on August 27th, 1862. He was 21 years old as of his discharge, born in Canton, Ohio, five feet four inches tall with light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair, and was a "mechanist" by occupation. He mustered out at Munson's Hill, Virginia.

I am dying to learn more about him and where he fits in my lineage. I don't remember my mother ever mentioning his name.

I'd love to hear from anyone with any information. You can reach me via email at georgef@informediate.com.

Thanks!
George

I have an interest in a John Rank who left his wife and family in East Yorkshire England when he sailed from Hull,England on board the ship "NEPAL" the year is thought to have been 1807. John arrived in New York, and from that time on, no further news was heard of him by his family back in England.
It was from that individual that the well known family of Ranks is derived, one of his descendants began the milling empire and J.Arthur Rank was a famous film producer in the 1940s and 50s

Hi David,
I have a John Rank of HOLLYM, farmer, born 1772, married 7 July 1796, MARY COATES of Hollym. He emigrated to America, nothing further being heard from him. He had issue a son JOHN Rank of Hollym who was the first miller of the Rank family.
This came off my family tree which was done by the Rank's who are part of J.Arthur Rank of the film industry.

Surnames: Rank Coates
I have also recently become interested in what became of John Rank Born 1771. A farmer from Hollym Yorkshire. He married Mary Coates and according to the Rank Story in the Master Millers soon after the birth of their 3rd child - also named John Rank (the Miller and father of James Rank)- he emigrated to America with no trace thereafter. Searching on this site I was informed of links to his other children left behind behind - Seth Rank babtised 01 may 1803 in Hollym Cum Withernsea Yorkshire and Fanny Rank Babtised 29th Dec 1805 in Patrington Yorkshire. The Rank Story says the children were probably brought up by their Grandparents and the 2 daughters were generously remembered in their Grandfathers will. It was suggested that the 2 daughters helped with the care of William Rank and his wife in old age. Being a Rank descendent I am curious as to what became of Seth and Fanny Rank?
Also I wonder what became of the John Rank that went to America?
