Do you happen to have any relations that went to the Colonies in early 1700's? I have been trying to discover where my family originated in England for 20 years now. My gggg grandfather was William Pannell born 1740, possibly in Virginia, possibly in England. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Deb Pannell

Ours were mostly tenent farmers working on the farms of other, larger land owners. Some of the sons married into these families.
I worked with a researcher in Atlanta years ago and the other explanation we got on the name was that Pannell/Panell was a variation of paynelle which was a French term for Pagan worshiper. Apparently the name was used for some of the original Celts as well as for Africans brought to the South through New Orleans.

My branchh of the Pannell family came through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and settled in Mississippi. They were slave owners of a decent ammount by the time of the Civil War. I know from my history classes in college that freed slaves sometimes took their former masters' names so that could account for some of the African-American Pannells, especially those living in northern Mississippi.

HEllo Cindy,
My father came to Michigan in the 1950's from Canada, he had 10 brothers and sisters. One brother (Jim) went out to California in the late 50's early 60's to become a movie star, appeared in bunch of small parts and went back to Canada. His sister (Alice) went to New York and New Jeresy. She pasted away in the early 60's. My father went to get her body and took it back to Canada where she is buried. So that is our Pannell's in US. The rest stayed in Canada. His father, my grandfather was from England, born 1904 and came to Canada at a young age as a stowaway.

Let me know if this helps you.

So is Walter Sr. your decendent right? I don't know anything about Walter Jr., i don't know if he ever came to canada or what. Harry (Henry Clark Pannell) is my grandfather, he had 10 children, my father Robert John Henry Pannell "Jack" was the oldest born in 1929. I am Robert John Pannell, the youngest of 3, I was born in 1969. I agree with you, it is great to get in touch with long lost reatives. Do you use Yahoo Messenger? Be nice to talk one on one. My Aunt Sue has a lot of our family history, she is my Uncle Dennis' wife and lives in Canada. I have been trying to get more info out of her. Would love to share it as i get it.

Yes I am in England in Kent which is in the south east about 30 miles from London.
It is interesting about Percy - perhaps he is from a previous marriage or even a relative of one of the other members of the family.
It sounds quite a sad story really. I am seeing my Grandfather next weekend and hope to see if he remembers any more about it. He rememebers being told about Henry/Walter emmigrating to Canada so maybe the names will jog some memories for him.
Is your father the Robert John Henry you spoke of? Your grandfather was cousin to my great grandfather who was born in 1907. My grandfather is David W Pannell Born 1938 and I was born in 1985. What age are you?
Thanks again for the info - it has been so exciting to find a long lost descendant!

i have felt the same way about the percy line, i have never heard of him, but i would love to see the 1911 census info. in 1901 census has walter, alice and percey, but it walter jr came 1902 they could have been part of that family.

About Harry, the way i am told he came over illegally 3 times and he was put back on a boat and sent back. On the 4th trip they gave up and put in on a farm to work and was treated very badly. From what i understand his parents died and the kids we split up.

Where are you? England? I am in the US, north of detroit. My father was born in canada to Harry and lila.

It is very interesting because I have been struggling to find any information about Walter and now I know why! We had no idea that they had emmigrated.

I think the Walter and Alice Gladstone & Percy is a flase start because of the date.

Such an interesting story. Perhaps it is worth looking at the Canadian emmigration records to see if it was a registered arrival or not!

i just found out from my Aunt that "Harry" was born Henry Clark Pannell, born 1/31/1904. I have no idea what his brother and sisters names were. The mother could have been Alice Gadson, I have Gladstone, but don't have prove of that. My grandpa Harry, named his children Robert John Henry, next was Alice, and then Walter, Russel, James, Lola, Diane, Dennis, Roy & Pauline. So the family names are there. I will have to do some research on Gadson. I have come across a Walter & Alice Gladstone, in 1901 they had a 13 year old sone name Percy. Do you know about Walter and Alice's death? My Aunt told me Harry came to Canada as a stoe away - it took 3 times and he was young.
rob

Pannell - Bequette - Missouri

Trying to find information on the family of Katie I. Pannell that married Francis James Bequette in Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri in 1892. I believe her mother was Anna R (maiden name unknown) born 1853 in Missouri. Katie had a brother named Gus Harvey Pannell and a sister Anna R. Pannell. Francis ( a photograher) and Katie lived in Bloomfield, Stoddard County, Missouri in 1900 and in St. Francois, St. Francois County, Missouri in 1910 census, but by 1930 they lived in San Diego, CA. I cannot find Francis and Katie and their children in the 1920 census. I think Katie's mother Anna R. remarried after the 1900 census to Samuel R. Elliott. (There is a possible connection to Pueblo, Colorado also.) I tried various spellings of the Pannell name, but had no luck. My email is dfcmrc@aol.com if you have any information for me.
I am looking for descendants of Sonny (not sure if nickname) and/or Pearl Pannell. They are the children of Melvin W. Pannell. They were probably born in the 1940's or 1950's, but no later than 1959 when Melvin died. If they are alive that would be great as well.

Contact me at melvin.pannell@morganstanley.com

Thank you for your message and I am delighted to have made contact with a member of the Pannell family.
Since my initial post I have gleaned a little information from New Zealand and have the records from the Christchurch Cemetary.
The Daniel Pannell headstone you found was presumably the one 1812-1881, he was also a shoemaker and a brother to the Thomas 1823-1892 that emigrated to NZ in 1880. It was this Thomas's wife Hannah Humphrey who is my relative. She would have been my 1st cousin 3 times removed. Her grandfather was James Humphrey 1757-1840 and my GGGGrandfather. The Humphrey's were mainly Butchers or Builders, in fact the last time I was there, a year or two ago, one was still a butcher in nearby Clare, Suffolk.
If you want some local information I would be pleased to supply it, although I no longer live in the area and cannot do enquiries 'on the ground', I did live around that area for many years and know it well. I visit occasionally as I still have a brother & sister in law living in Steeple Bumpstead.

Hi, my husband's name is Peter James Pannell. His grandfather's name was Arnold, whose father emigrated to New Zealand about 1870.Arnold had a brother named Harry and another named Will and Pete thinks they may have had a sister,Dorothy. The Pannells established a large boot and shoe retail and repair business in Christchurch which was still going in the 1960s so it sounds like these are the ones you are looking for. We took a trip to England in 2005 and went to Steeple Bumstead. We met a man whose surname was Suckling who told us he'd known a family of Pannells who had a shop opposite his house and also a farm along the road. These must have been the Pannells who lived and died in Steeplebumstead. He also told us that Sucklings and Pannells left Steeplebumstead together, well before this and moved to New Zealand and both families opened shoe/boot repair and retail businesses in Christchurch. This elderly gentleman was a mine of information! We then went to the SteepleBumstead cemetery and found a Daniel Pannell, and I think Thomas and Hannah also.
Hope this helps to solve the mystery for you. The Pannells didn't 'fall off the face of the earth' but simply vanished 'Down Under' to New Zealand!
regards, Dianne and Peter Pannell.
