Re: Ruth Northrup/Northrup b. 1766-1777, Dutchess Co., NY

Thank you for giving your consideration to my query.

According to the book The Northrup-Northrop genealogy: record of the known descendants of Joseph Northrup…by A. Judd Northrup, New York: Grafton Press, 1908, the father Enos “lived in Dutchess Co., N. Y. ; m [spouse not identified], in Mohawk Valley, N. Y.”, and the brothers Enos, Cornelius and Thomas were among the seven, or perhaps more, children of Enos Northrup, who was born (date not known) and died 1812. See page 385, “Unconnected Families.”
According to the History of Ingham and Eaton Coutnies, Michigan by Samuel W. Durant. published 1880 by D. W. Ensign & Co., Philadelphia, “Enos was the youngest in the family of Enos and Elizabeth (Griffin) Northrup which consisted of ten persons.” Seepage 312;

The A Judd Northrup reference does not show that the son Enos had a sister Ruth. The siblings specifically mentioned in this reference were Mary, Cornelius, Richard, Finetta, Sarah, Thomas and Enos.

Ten Ruth Northrups are indexed in the A Judd Northrup reference, but none is the Ruth Northrup I am searching for.

You state, "also i know that enos mother and father died when he was around 17." The son Enos was born Jan 13, 1813, so his father would have died around 1830; but the A Judd Northrop reference indicates the father Enos died in 1812.

In any case, the Ruth I am searching for was born about 1766-1767, about 28 years earlier than Mary, the first child referenced in the A Judd Northrup book.

I'm still searching for parents of Ruth Northrup who married John Jersey/Garsey.
I have gathered information on my family line from when they had immigrated to the States but need more information going farther back now.
My line starts with Joseph Northrup married to Mary Norton. He came over to Connecticut on the "Hector & Martha" in 1637/9. I believe that they originated in the Yorkshire area of England. Does anyone have any further information on this line?
email me at teamhair at charter dot net

My father:Henry Harris Northrop had 4 brothers, one of which was named Eugene and a sister named Priscilla which I have reason to believe has passed away. He was married to Carol Searles Bowen from Elba. I was their only child, born in 1938. My mother never wanted to talk about him, so I have only bits and pieces. He was an officer in the Army-Air Force, a pilot, supposedly shot down and a POW for the rest of the war. Lt. Commander? They were divorced when I was 2. He was from Batavia, New York. I did some sluething when I was 16 and found him at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He had remarried, had a son and that is the last I knew. The wife was called Billy

Northrop family tree

Well, my Great Aunt Leah was born in 1911. I found this out via the Social Security Death records, which are accurate since she is the only Leah Siebert (Married my Uncle, Loren Siebert) within McClean county who died. Also, she died when I was 7, which was in 1978, which is also what the death date says. Therefore, if we're talking about a woman (Luara) having a child no later than her mid-30s, I'd say Luara (Maiden name still unknown by the way) was born around 1876 at the very earliest, and if she had Leah at 18 that would make Luara's birth date 1893 at the latest. Unless her husband, the "Mr." Northrop in question, was a lot older, I'd say 1876-1893 was probably around his birth date as well.
As for the spelling of the name, I know it's right, because I have several monogrammed items of Luara's, all dating around 1901-1904 (One being a World's Fair souvenir pin with a heart, so I'm guessing then her birthdate was earlier than 1893 unless she had a serious boyfriend at 11!).

Brent
The 1865 census counted him living with James Northrop and his wife. The 1850, 1855, and 1860 census also show this so he was adopted sometime before 1850.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Stephen Northrop of Geauga Co. OH

I believe there is an error in stating that the following man served in the Rev. War:

Stephen Northrop
born 22 Jan 1759 Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT
died 17 Oct 1831, Munson, Geauga Co., OH
married 1st Betsey; married 2nd Deborah Robinson

I descend from Stephen through his son, Amaziah Northrop. I have been researching Stephen Northrop's family, including his children from both marriages. I planned to apply to the DAR but now believe that the information about his military service is incorrect.

In the book, Raccoon Brigade, Soldiers of the Revolution in Geauga County, OH, by Jeannette Grosvenor, Stephen is noted on pages 468-470. It states that Stephen Northrop "served as private in the 9th Connecticut regiment". He is listed as serving in the "5th Connecticut Regiment, Col. David Waterbury, 9th Company, Capt. Nehemiah Beardsley. He enlisted as a private 16 May 1775 and was discharged 11 Dec. 1775". In 1926, Stephen Northrop was identified as a Soldier of the American Rev. and later a gravestone was placed at Fowlers Mill Cemetery, Sec. 3, Lot 37. His gravestone reads:

Stephen Northrop
Connecticut QM SGT
9th Co. 5th Regiment
Revolution
22 Jan. 1759-17 Oct. 1831

An Amy E. K. Wheeler (Mrs. Silas C.), #155361, applied (before 1928) through the Nathan Perry Chapter as a descendant of this Stephen Northrup.

In my research into Stephen's family, I received a copy of the DAR application (before 1928) for another descendant, through his daughter Nancy. In this application it states that Stephen served in the Rev. War in the 6th Regiment, Dutchess Co., NY.

I ordered Stephen Northrop's Rev. War Pension Record and Military Record. I requested for service from both NY and CT. None was found. I believe that Stephen is not the Stephen Northrop of the 9th Co. 5th Regiment CT.

I have been able to find 3 Stephen Northrop/Northrup's who served in NY or CT as follows:

~ 9th Company CT, Col. Waterbury Regiment, Captain Nehemiah Beardsley
~ Westchester County Milita, New York, 4th Regiment, Col. Thaddeus Crane, Capt. David Pardee, (was "Quartermaster Sergeant")
~ Dutchess Co. NY 6th Regiment, Col. Morris Graham, Captain Richard Sackett's Company

I ordered the Rev. War Pension Record for another Stephen Northrup,
Born April 1785, South Salem, Westchester Co., NY
Died 24 Sept 1841, Sullivan, Madison Co., NY
wife Rhoda

This Stephen Northrup, (born 1785) is the man who served in the 5th CT Regiment. His pension records also state he served several times over numerous years, including under Capt. David Pardee and Capt. Richard Sackett. This Stephen Northrup served in all three of the above mentioned military company's from CT and NY.

Mehitable Northro(u)p

she is said to have been born 24 Mar 1787 in Dutchess Co., New York. going on that information, there are 5 Northroup's in Dutchess Co., New York in the 1790 census, all in Fredericksontown, and no other variation of Northrop shows up.
the 5 Northroup's in Dutchess Co., 1790;
m=male, yr=year, f=female, +over -under
Eli 1 m+16yr, 0 m-16yr, 4 f
Joseph 3 m+16yr, 0 m-16yr, 6 f
Joseph, Jr. 1 m+16yr, 2 m-16yr, 4 f
Paul 1 m+16yr, 0 m-16yr, 3 f
Stephen 1 m+16yr, 1 m-16yr, 4 f

of these people, Joseph's genealogy is scanned at GoogleBooks and Mehitable isn't mentioned in it. I assume Joseph, Jr., is Joseph's son. Paul and Stephen live close to each other, 3 or 4 houses apart, by all appearences. none of the others appear to live near one another.
with it appearing that Mehitable is not related to the two Joseph's, that leaves Eli, Paul, and Steven.
at WorldConnect, I find several listings of a Mehitable Northrup, no date or place of birth, father Eli, mother Mehitable True...hmmm...I think it was Truelove, but my memory slips here...I didn't follow it up because the one listing with a bit of information gives Eli's birthplace as CT and I can't tie into that at this time.
can anyone narrow this down any better than this?
many thanks for your help.

This Ruth may not be the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Lobdell Northrup. That Ruth was born in Ridgefield, Fairfield, CT 3 Sept 1765, married Daniel Bradley on 10 May 1784 in Ridgefield, Fairfield, CT. In the Feb. 2006 issue (Vol. 48, No. 3; ISSN #0197-2103) of Connecticut Ancestry Newsletter/Magazine from the Connecticut Ancestry Society, genealogist Mary Ellen Gleason writes on page 101 about the origins of Lewis Northrup, brother of the Ruth of Isaac and Elizabeth. It seems that the Northrup Genealogy by Anson Judd Northrup had erroneous info on Lewis' father Isaac that has perpetuated for over 100 years. She went to CT. and did research in various original records and found that the Isaac attributed to Lewis is not the right Isaac. Isaac Northrup, father of Lewis and Ruth, who married Elizabeth Lobdell was born in Ridgefield, CT. 24 Dec. 1725 to David and Rebecca (Downs)Northrup. Isaac and Elizabeth's children were all born Ridgefield, Fairfield, CT. Your Ruth seems to have roots in Dutchess County, New York.
I know this info might not help you but there was a response from someone else who said your Ruth was of Isaac and Elizabeth Lobdell Northrup, and I wanted to clarify that.
Warmest Regards,
Virginia (Ginny) Northrup Wallace

I am looking for the parents, date of birth and place of birth for RUTH NORTHRUP/NORTHROP.

Information about this Ruth which I already have.

Ruth Northrup married John Garsey (De Jersey or Jersey) on 21 March 1784 in First Stanford Baptist Church, Bangall, Dutchess Co., NY. John Garsey/DeJersey/Jersey was born 1 December 1762 in Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY (birth recorded St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg, Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., NY). A tombstone in East Beekmantown Cemetery, Beekmantown, Clinton Co., NY is inscribed “In Memory of / Mr. John JARSEY, who / died Sept. 27th 1802, / In the 40th year / of his age. / In Memory of / Ruth, who died / Sept. 13th AD. 1825, / in the 59th year / of her age. / Late widow of John JERSEY / deceased wife of / Jesse PARDY.” The widow Ruth (Northrup) Jersey had taken Jesse Pardee/Pardy as her 2nd husband.

If Ruth’s age at death as inscribed on the tombstone - 59 years - is correct, she would have been born during the period Sept. 9, 1776 – Sept. 8, 1777.

In the Records of the Crum Elbow Precinct of Dutchess Co., NY, there are entries for the period 1764-1784 mentioning Henry Jersey/Gersey, the father of John Garsey/DeJersey/Jersey. In entries for 1769 and 1771, the name “Enos Northrup” is mentioned as a neighbor of Henry Jersey in the Crum Elbow Precinct. In 1784, when he married Ruth Northrup, John Jersey, age about 22, might have been living with his father in the Crum Elbow precinct .

John and Ruth (Northrup) Jersey’s first child was born March/April 01, 1786, Hopewell, Dutchess Co., NY.

It would appear that Ruth could have been a daughter or a sister of the Enos Northrup mentioned in the Crum Elbow Precinct records, but I have no proof of such a connection.

Thanks for any leads.
Sharon!!
My heart almost skipped a beat when I read your e-mail. You said you looked up all that info with a quick search. A "quick" search. Maybe it's because I'm new at this, but I keep going in circles with my search. Do you happen to know if you and I are related? I began my search in 2003 and ended it in2003. Ha Ha. I'm more dedicated then ever in my quest to get to the beginning of the Northrup's. I'd love to be a part of the DAR for many reasons. 1) It would be something wonderful and worthwhile for my 9 year old daughter and I to do together; the meetings, and participating in any way possible. 2) Being a single mom of three kids, two being teen boys, having a little help with college for them would be helpful. 3) Finding out that our family played such an important role in history will give my kids and I a good reason to dive into history in general and make it interesting for the kids to learn. What do I need to do in order to join the DAR? How is it done?
Very sincerely,

Marcella Helene Northrup
Lorelaiandroryg@verizon.net

(813) 242-7914
Florida

I am looking for information of the Frederick Northrop family from South Bristol, Ontario County of New York state.
In the 1870 census they have:
114 Northrup, Frederick South Bristol 1870 15
114 Northrup, Hannah South Bristol 1870 15
114 Northrup, Isaac South Bristol 1870 15
114 Northrup, Parmelia R South Bristol 1870 15
114 Northrup, William South Bristol 1870 15

Now in the 1875 the last name is spelled Northrup.
In the 1875 census for South Bristol they have:
Northrop, Frederick 24 227
Northrop, Hannah N 24 227
Northrop, Isaac 24 227
Northrop, Perrmelia R 24 227

In the South Bristol 1892 census they have:
Northrop, William South Bristol 1892 13

Northrup, Annie South Bristol 1892 13
Northrup, Isaac D South Bristol 1892 13
Northrup, John South Bristol 1892 13
Northrup, Sarah A South Bristol 1892 13

I don't know if they spelled it wrong with a the U instead of the O or that is the correct last name for the last four people. In the 1870 and 1875 there are two different spellings for Parmelia/Permelia.
I am trying to find out which Northrop/Northrup family they come from and where Frederick and Parmelia are buried.

Dear Jerry99999,

Name: Joseph Northrup
Birth Date: 1623
Birth Place: England

Hi, I'm Marcella Helene Northrup and I'm fairly new at searching for my ancestors. It's amazing how people can actually search and find information about each Northrup all the way from the 1600s when families of today need a GPS (Global Positioning System) in their kids' cell phone or car to keep track of them. Anyway, I'm in awe of those who have accomplished their family genealogy search successfully. Are you willing to share your family information with me? I'm with the England to Ohio to NY to Florida portion of the family. Some of us are still in Ohio (I've never been, but I know a few that are still there). I want to know everything...what have we accomplished as a family? What meaningful contributions have we made? What is our education? What types of jobs have we held? I know about farming and baking. Were any of us writers, authors, scientists or mathematicians? Were we normal for the most part? What was our medical history like? Religons? Unwed mothers? Random acts of kindness??? (yes, I'm a dreamer), What about Pastors? Other people of the cloth? I'd love to find out that we have some authors among us. Some musicians.
I've printed out all of the Northrup DAR (Daughter's of the American Revolution)information, but how do I connect the dots to include my portion of the family as being a descendent of those who played such a huge role in history?

Very sincerely,

Marcella Helene Northrup (Marcy)
Florida
(813) 242-7914
Lorelaiandroryg@verizon.net
