My great grandmother on my fathers mothers side's name was Marie Rosanna Meunier. She married Lester Washburn around 1897 in Canada and then they moved to New York. I found a listing for Marie Rosanna Alphonsine Meunier in the Quebec Vital and Church records Drouin Collection but I cannot view because I don't have world access. If anyone out there can check it our or see if there is a birth record or marriage record for her I would really appreciate it

Ok, this is where I made an educated guess as to the Jean - Joseph-Amand connection. In other words, unless someone comes up with factual information otherwise these two gentlemen are connected. Jos. Amand (b. 1738) was the oldest son of Joseph and Marie-Josephe Leblanc Meunier (m.1734). Both father and son were at Grande Pre at the same time, according to my stats. At the time of the Deportation,1755, J. Amand would have been 17 years of age. His father would have been 48 years old. I'm assuming they were born in the village du Clau Landry, Grand Pre, N.S. (N.S. Genealogical Society). Jean Meunier, also born in Grand Pre abt. 1760. Jos. Amand would have been abt. 31 years old. This means that there were at least 3 generations of Meunier's in Grande Pre. As you may be aware, at the time of the Deportation, the British forces destroyed every home, barn and most importantly, the church where all the inhabitants records were kept. Nothing was saved. There are no records that I know of that exist for Jos. Amand's wife as all baptismal, birth, deaths and marriages were burned to the ground. Considering that these times were warlike, means it must have been survival at all costs. To recap - Joseph (father) was married at age 27. He was 31 when Jos. Amand was born; Jos. Amand was 22 yrs. old when Jean was born. If nothing else, the dates match up well. Close ties meant everything to the inhabitants, often passing on first names in order to keep property and their world of belongings in the family. Sons often married outside their villages so their kin lived in almost all of the villages. Children were more often than not, born out of wedlock and 2nd.cousins married each other. This may not be conclusive, but it makes logical sense.

Hi Lionel. Thanks for the quick response.

He's my real problem: we know that Jean Meunier and Magdeleine Hebert had their first child, Jean-Baptiste, in New Brunswick in 1787 ("Les Registres de la Baie des Chaleurs 1786-1799"; Janet B. Jehn, author; 1984). You indicated in your post, however, that Joseph Armand Meunier was born in 1760. If Jean was Joseph Armand's son, I can't get the timeline to work. Could you please help me understand?

Thanks, Yvon.

I have just finished my Meunier genealogical chart and have posted it on Family Tree Builder, My Heritage web site. If you wish you can google it to find more information. In any case, what you need to know is who Jean M. parents were. What I found out through research and an educated guess is that Jean M. parents were Joseph Amand Meunier and wife Unknown. At the time of the Acadian Deportation, 1755, all records of births, death, marriage, etc. were destroyed by the British Forces. They burned all the farms, barns and chapel (where the records were kept) in Grand Pre, Nova Scotia. What I found was that Joseph Amand and his father Joseph and wife Marie-Joseph were both at Grand Pre at this time. I worked out that J. Amand (b. abt. 1760)was at the appropriate age (22 yrs.) when he would have married. It therefore, makes sense that he was the best link to my Meunier line. Jean was Joseph Amand son. There is more evidence of this if you check with My Heritage. Cheers, Lionel

Elaine Meunier Mazonna

From The Catholic Northwest Progress newspaper, 22 Jan. 2009, p. 26. Posted as a courtesy.

Elaine Meunier Mazonna, wife of Deacon Alvin Mazonna, and a skilled cook and baker who'd invite lonely soldiers home for dinner, died Dec. 23, 2008, at Madigan Army Hospital [Tacoma, WA] of sarcoma. She was 68.

"She was a great cook, baker, homemaker and an x-ray technician and most importantly a wife, mother, grandmother, friend and a big kid at heart," said her family in a funeral eulogy. A member of Ss. Cosmas and Damian Mission in Orting [Pierce Co., WA], Mrs. Mazonna was active in the prayer group, prayer shawl ministry and Divine Mercy ministry. She taught knitting and crochet and was a eucharistic minister to the local soldier's home.

Born Elaine Meunier in Barton, VT, she met her future husband at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver while both were working as x-ray technicians for the Army. They married in Denver in 1963. Mrs. Mazonna left the military the same year at the rank of E-5 and went on to work as a radiologic technologist at various hospitals and clinics, retiring in 2000. The Mazonnas moved to Graham [Pierco Co., WA] from Fairbanks, Alaska five years ago.

Mrs. Mazonna loved picking berries and then sharing her bounty with others through the jams, pies, breads and biscuits she made. She'd invite soldiers to dinner and other activities. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, crochet and traveling, especially to shrines and beaches. Other favorite pastimes included puzzles, dominoes, Yahtzee, photography and blowing bubbles.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Yvette, Madeline, Lucille, Elizabeth, Doris and Robert. She is survived by Deacon Alvin, her husband of 45 years; sons Thomas and Tony; a daughter, Delia; a brother, Alfred; and seven grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan 2. at Ss. Cosmas and Damian Church.

Kathy,
yes you are right, It is an odd coincidence that the names are so close, but I have found that there are alot of "repeaters" in families...Good luck with your search.

If by chance you find anything about an Alphonre/Elphage Meunier b. 1858 in St.Cesaire(especially who his parents might be)let me know. St. Jean is not too far from there, it seems we are looking in the same area, and I know I have Louis' and Antoinettes in my family.

Have you checked with the person who posted the tree, maybe you could double check thier sources....

chris
milkdud16

hello
Though the names Louis Meunier and Marie-Louise Borne are given, the record seems to be not quite right for me. My Antoine Meunier's marriage record to Monique Surprenant lists Louis and M.Louise as his parents on 4 Jul 1808 St. Jean. The Antoine in the tree you mentioned does not give Monique as his wife. I have seen other family trees, but the birthdate for Antoine is the early 1700s with Louis in 1750 -- this is definitely the wrong Antoine. I'll keep searching the for marriage record of Louis and M.Louise -- someday I"ll find it! Thanks for responding, Kathy

hello kmarsh0000,

there is quite a large family tree on One World Tree with some of the information you are looking for including some dates.I searched under Antoine. Maybe you already know about this, but I did not see your name listed as contributing. I am also interested in this line since my Meunier family has Louis' and Antoinettes' and I know they come from around this area. I cannot find any info. to connect my ancestor with anybody! I need records from the time period between 1851 census Canada and 1901 cesus, I am currently persuing some church records. I hope this helps!
milkdud 16

Hello milkdud16,

Thank you for your email. Even though I am a direct decendant of Bertrand & Madeleine through my mother, I can not find any of the information that you are looking for. Since most of the early Meunier families were large, there are many branches on this tree. When mother did the research she primarily stuck to the direct lines and I've not been able to find the information that you are looking for in that research.

As a side note, we were in Slidel La which is just outside of New Orleans this past fall. While there I looked in both the Slidel and New Orleans phone books and was amazed at the number of "Meunier's". However I've not tried to make any contact. Perhaps you may be able to find and locate some of them by looking in the respective phone books which your library may have.

Have a great New Year!

Rodger

Hello milkdud16,

I received your email this morning, but not the one below. I was having trouble logging onto the site when I found this one.
Bertand Meunier and Madeleine Guibour are my mother's direct decenants. There were many Pierre Meunier's in the family and looking back through what I have, I can find none that were born around that time on my direct line and not in the area of St. Ceasiar Quebec. The closest that I can come to was a Pierre born 1844 in St. Angele-de-Monnior Compte de Rouville, PQ. Mother did not persue any of the Meunier branches, only the direct lines.

We were recently visiting our daughter in Slidel just outside of New Orleans. While there I looked in both the Slidel and New Orleans phone books and was amazed at the number of "Meunier's" living there. However I've not persued any contact.

I'm sorry that I can be of no further help to you.

hello Rodger,

I am searching for information about an Alphonre,Elphage, Elphonre Meunier born in St. Cesaire Quebec in 1858. I am trying to find his parents. From what I understand they owned quite a large family holding in this area. A Pierre Meunier born about 1829 was located in this area during the 1851 Canada Census, he is a person of interest to me, and also several Louis Meunier(we know Louis was a family name), Clovis, Jas.?, and Jos.? all born around 1830 were listed in this 1851 Census, all living in L'ange Gardien very close by. Does your family intersect with any of these? Or have you ever heard of Ephonre, Alphonre, Elpahge from this time period? The family came to the us in 1898, and settled in R.I. (Pawtuckett)Elphage, and his wife Delia (Gingras)their children, including Loyola or Loyall my grandfather, Clara, Ida, Flora, Rudolph, Cecilia, Adrian, and Antionette, and several others whose names escape me presently. The story goes that he sold his portion of the family farm and moved to the states...
Any help would be appreciated...
Thank you,

milkdud16

MEUNIER, PIERRE (1670-?)

MEUNIER, PIERRE (1670-?). Pierre Meunier, a member of the La Salle expedition,qv was born in Paris in 1670, the son of Louis Meunier, Sieur de Preville. He remained among the East Texas Indians following La Salle's murder. After his rescue by Alonso De León,qv he gave significant testimony in Mexico concerning events of the La Salle incursion and returned to Texas with Domingo Terán de los Ríosqv as interpreter of Indian languages. Never permitted to return to France, he became a soldier and settler in New Mexico. By 1696 he was in Santa Fe, where he filed written information on himself in 1699 before disappearing from the record. When testifying in Mexico, he claimed his father's title for himself.

At age fourteen, he related, he traveled from Paris to La Rochelle as La Salle's companion and sailed thence on the storeship Aimable,qv which later was lost at the mouth of Matagorda Bay. In the colony Meunier evidently incurred the leader's wrath, for when La Salle undertook his exploration west of the bay area in the 1685-86 winter, he left Meunier and four others aboard the ship Belle in irons. He was therefore on the vessel when she wrecked on Matagorda Peninsula during a squall. He returned to Fort St. Louis with the other survivors after an ordeal of some months' duration. When La Salle left Fort St. Louis on his final journey, with the intention of proceeding to his Fort St. Louis on the Illinois River, Meunier was among his company of seventeen. As the group neared the Trinity River in mid-March 1687, Meunier went with three other men to bring to camp some buffalo carcasses that the hunters had killed. Consequently, he witnessed events surrounding the murders that culminated in the death of La Salle. Afterward, when seven of the survivors resumed the march northward, Meunier, claiming illness, remained among the Hasinais and had his face and body tattooed in the natives' manner. When he and Pierre Talon (see TALON CHILDREN) heard of the approaching Spanish troop of Alonso De León in May 1690, they sought to evade capture but were taken by surprise. They guided the De Leon expedition to the Hasinai village near the Neches River and served as interpreters for the missionaries as they began building San Francisco de los Tejas Mission. As the two young Frenchmen translated the native language into French, Francisco Martínez and Gregorio de Salinas Varonaqv relayed it in Castilian, enabling the friars to compile a Hasinai wordlist.

At age twenty, Meunier-unlike the fourteen-year-old Talon-was considered old enough to give reliable testimony to Spanish officials in Mexico. When the Spanish troop returned to the Rio Grande, Salinas Varona took Meunier and reports of the expedition and hurried on to Mexico City. Meunier gave his testimony in the capital on August 19, 1690. The following year he was sent back to Monclova to join the Terán expedition as interpreter. During the march he accompanied Martínez on his side trip to Matagorda Bay and thus proved himself as an interpreter of the Karankawan language as well as Hasinai. Little is known of him after the expedition returned to Mexico, except that he went to New Mexico as a soldier with the second expedition of Diego de Vargas or shortly thereafter.

My mother's side of the family came from Canada around 1853-1855: Medore Meunier b 1821 Canada and wife, Zoe Michel, b 1828 Canada (married 15 Feb 1847 St. Jean). They changed the name to Miller when they settled in Wisconsin.
I think Medard's parents were Antoine Meunier and Monique Surprenant. Antoine's parents were Louis Meunier and Marie-Louise Borne.
Medard's son, Amable Medore Meunier (Medore Miller in US) was born 2 May 1853 Canada and married Philomene Brouillard in Little Chute, WI in 1880.
Any connection or ideas about Native American blood lines?
My gggrandfather was Fabian Eugene Meunier b. 1844/45 in Montreal. His father was Isaac Meunier. Fabian came to the US in Dec. 1865 and remained here. I found him in the Montreal City Directory in 1865 with his father Isaac. Fabian changed his name to Miller shortly after coming here. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. We think his mother's name was Helene Brault.

Re: Bertrand MEUNIER b.abt 1625 - m. - Madeleine GUIBOUR

Hello aameunier. I see that this post is a few years old and perhaps you have the information you needed by now. I an new to this, so please forgive me if I take up too much space.
My mother was the daughter of Philias Abraham Meunier and our line goes all the way back to Bertrand Meunier & Madeline Guibour. My mother has researched both the Meunier and Hurtubise lines back to France. That being said, I can offer you no information on Aurele Gilbert Meunier.
The following is information that my mother was able to find about Pierre Meunier, our first ancestor in Canada:
#256, Pierre Meunier-dit-LaPierre, our first ancestor in Canada;

Source of information for #256, PIERRE MEUNIER -dit-LaPIERRE was taken from "Dictionaire Genealogique des Famille du Qubec", page 204
by Rene Jette. These records originate from ancient R.C. church records. The following information taken from these dictionaires is of the first
census taken in "New France (Canada)" in 1666.

1)	Pierre was possibly a soldier in the "Regiment de Carrigan" who had come from France to fight against he British in the earliest days of New France.

2)	Pierre waqs classified as a master stonemason and many were brought over at this time to build forts. From "Dictionaire Genealogique des
Familles Canadien", page 428 by L"Abbe Cyprien Tanguay, Vol. 7.

3)	Pierre was confirmed on the 9/27/1665 at the age of 17, in Ste. Ours, Contrecoeur, P.Q.

4)	By 1666, Pierre worked as a "Domestique" for the religeous order of the "Sulpicine" of Montreal. This R.C. order were missionaries from France.

5)	By 1667, Pierre was living in Montreal.

6)	In 1681 Pierre was living in Saite Ours, Contrecoeur, P.Q. At this time he wasa tenant-farmer of the Seigneural land system for Mr. Boucher. In
time these farmers owned their own land.

I hope that this is of some help. I have all of the charts that mother made and have transferred them to my computer and updated to the present time, in Excel format. If I can be of further help, plese let me know!

Regards. Rodger Hurtubise

Druilhet, Drouet, Dauphin, Senet, Senette Family 1797 Louisiana Document

Marie Josephe Dauphinb. abt 1763 in New Orleans(?), d. Nov. 1796 is the daughter of Jean Joseph Dauphin and Marie Ann Meunier. The following document is about her estate and was entered into the US Congressional Record in 1834.

The Library of Congress

A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation: U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates, 1774 - 1875
American State Papers, House of Representatives, 23rd Congress, 1st Session
Public Lands: Volume 6

23rd Congress
No. 1185
1st Session
ON CLAIM TO LAND IN LOUISIANA
COMMUNICATED TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
FEBUARY 18,1834

Mr. Cave Johnson, from the Committee on Private Land Claims, to whom was referred the petition of the heirs of Eugene Senet, reported:
That on the 18th of October, 1797, Don Louis De Blanc, commandant of the post of Attakapas, in pursuance of a decree of the governor general of he provence of Louisiana, exposed to public sale the property of the succession of Marie Joseph Dauphin; that among the property sold was a tract of land of sixteen arpents front by forty in depth on each side of the river Teche, which was brought by Eugene Senet.
The petitioners, who are the heirs of Eugene Senet, state that on the change of government and the establishment of the land office for the registry of claims heir ancestor sent the title papers by a surveyor of the United States to be recorded; that their ancestor shortly after died, leaving his children of tender age; that, from some omission, the claim was confirmed for the land on the west side of the river only, and they now ask for confirmation on the east side.
In the opinion of the committee the claim is a good one. The right to sixteen arpents on both sides of the river is ascertained by a solemn judicial proceeding in the year 1797, and the existence of the title in form is therein affirmed. The proceeding in 1797 shows that it was then an old plantation, and parol evidence is exhibited of coninual occupancy and cultivation for the last thirty years of both sides of the river. They accordingly report a bill.

____________________________

Translation.
Don Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, governor general of the province of Louisiana:
I hereby give notice to the commandant of Attakapas, Don Louis De Blanc, that in the proceedings of the estate of Marie Joseph Dauphin there is a petition of Joseph Drouet, which petition, and the decree made thereon, is of the following tenor:
Joseph Drouet, husband of Rosa Senet, as appears by the proceedings of the estate of Marie Joseph Dauphin, represents that this is the most favorable moment to obtain an advantageous sale of the property of the succession existing in the post of Attakapas, and consisting of the plantation, cattle, and tools, which cannot be transported to the capital. Wherefore your lordship will be pleased to issue ordes to the commandant of Attakapas to proceed to the sale in the usual way.

Decree.
Having considered the above, let the order issue as prayed for by Joseph Drouet, in order that the commandant of Attakapas proceed to the sale of the inventoried property of Marie Joseph Dauphin, deceased, at public auction, after the legal forms.
signed GAYOSO

Approved by Nicolas Marie Vidal, lieutenant governor, auditor of war and assessor general, at New Orleans, the 14th September, 1797.
signed P. PEDESCLAUX, Notary Public.
