I am searching for information about R. V. McWhirter. The only records I have to go by are from an 1880 census record for Arkansas, Poinsett County, Little River TWP.

It states that:
R.V. McWhirter was born in 1839 in Tennessee. He married S. (Sallie?) J. Miller and had the following children: James Henry (1866), John Vinson (1868), Nancy Priscilla (1870), Alis (1872), Thomas D. (1874), William (1875), and Mary/Mollie (1879). R.V.’s parents are unknown but the 1880 census stated that his father was born in South Carolina, and mother in Tennessee.

I have searched census records and am unable to locate him before 1880. I have gathered a little info on his children except for Alis, Thomas D., and William.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated and I am glad to share what I have collected so far.
Thank you, Tena

Tena,
A thought. My McWh*rter tie is through Robert Stephens McWhorter (McWhirter) and Priscilla. Your RV could be Robert Vinson McWhirter? On family group I have Robert as child of Robert/Priscilla. Also a daughter Molly, a son William. Vinson/Vincent was used in this family many generations. My tie is daughter Augusta Pauline McWhorter who md. Julius Burleson. This family along with other Burlesons and McWhorters migrated to East Texas. My grandmother was born in Honey Grove, TX in 1888. Your family is probably associated with this family of McNairy County, Adamsville, Tenn. Hope to connect.
Michelle

Tena,
Your RV named his children after 'children' of Robert Stephens McWhorter and Priscilla. The name Vinson/Vincent was passed down generations was what I meant to say. I just wanted to clarify other statement.
Thank you.

Hi Michelle, I am reviewing my old posts and came across our unfinished conversation! I hope we can continue it.
Can I contact you through email to share and exchange more ideas on this line? Can you tell me are we speaking of the same McWhirter? Is your Robert the same as mine? Best to you, Tena

A number of African American McWhirter's hailed from Spartenburg, SC and some are propurted to be buried in New Prospect Cemetery. I could not find the one I was looking for as I believe the grave may be too old and not readable at this time. I am researching J. Waddie Whirter who was married to Hattie Lattimore in 1901 in Cleveland County, NC. They both were school teachers and found the McWhirter Academy for Colored Students in Spartenburg. My great aunt died in 1949 and J W was still living. I have not been able to find a death certificate for him although there is one in SC for Hattie
