McCain links to NB, Canada

I'll try another post. Looking for anyone with info. on McCain familys from New Brunswick, Canada.

I decend from a family of McCains that are believed to have left Ireland in the early to mid 1820's and settled near the town of Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick.

The origional siblings were John, George, William and Isabel and the area they settled became know locally as McCain Settlement (or McKanes). The brothers were only a few years apart in age and ranged from 1800-1807 possibly. Two of the brothers wives are know to have come from Co. Tyrone and were McClay sisters. The other brother's wife was named McAllen or McDermit.

Of the first generation of children born in NB, two of the boys left NB and set off for the United States (possibly Reading PA area). If anyone in PA has any McCain men in or around the 1850's and can't find an origin for them, drop me a line and I'll see if their names or dates fit in my tree.

Also, later generations are believed to have moved onto Brittish Columbia and/or Alberta. Anyone with Canadian McCain info. I'd be happy to chat and see if we can find any links.

Andrew L. McCain

What proof do you have that Hugh of the Waxhaws had a wife named Mary Hamilton? Also what proof that he had a daugher named Jane? You missed the oldest son, John S. McCain, b. 1853. I believe I remember that John's tombstone is next in line Jane's.

I'm looking for information about my great grandfather Walter Byron McCain. All I know is that allegedly he was born in Alabama in 1873, but I haven't been able to find any records of him. He was married to Havannah Adams of Rockford AL(Coosa County), and he died in 1933. My father never knew him, nobody ever talked about him so apparently he was not popular with the family.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Corky Stewart

In an 1860 US Census, The Northern Division, Randolph County, Alabama, dated 9 June 1860, there are McCains listed: James age 45, Enicy (Sp?) age 43 , Martha age 19, Catharine age 17 , Sarah E. age 15 on Page 22. And of interest, their occupations are listed as Farmer, and all the rest weavers. Probably more names on Page 23. I had this census page copied, only to find out it was not relevant to my McCains. I know I am years late, but I could not let your post go unanswered. Hope it helps.

I heard this family story about a Susannah Cain. Her sister was Elizabeth (who maybe married a William, but that could be wrong) and a brother Thomas that may have died young. Their mother may have died when they were little. They would be living in NC (maybe Orange Co area). Susannah, Elizabeth, and Thomas would be born around 1745.

Last name could be:
Cain
Caine
Cane
McCain

If anyone could help me out I would love it.

Kim

She had a son went by the name of McCain.

There is more there that I'll refrain from pasting here.
I notice Jesse Lawrence Macon shows Robert Boling/Bolling/Bolen Wheeler marrying Amanda Sims McCain in Aug 1864 while he has Walter/Water Wheeler (McCain) born 1875. Wonder what the correct marriage date is.

Regarding the Jesse J. LeCroy (born c1878) on the 1900 census with them, I can't identify him.

I probably shouldn't stir muddy waters further, but there was another Jesse LeCroy was b. 1885 in Coosa Co., son of Alexander LeCroy and Laura Frances (Connaway) whose uncle Charles married Louisa Ellen Yarbrough, aunt of Mary Emma (Pitts) Thomas, daughter-in-law of Ailsey (McCain) Thomas whose father was Colin McCain of Clay Co., AL. Two of her (Mary Emma Pitts') Yarbrough aunts also married their first cousin William LeCroy, son of Hosea LeCroy and (Mary Emma's great-aunt) Mary (Short). Jesse Lawrence Macon Jr. is a distant cousin of these Shorts through Hartons/Harthorns, Bells, Thompsons.
Apologies for rambling.

She may have died in Tennessee. I can not find her in the 1930 Census. My 85 year old cousin, told me see went back to Tennessee before 1930. She is in the 1910 and 1920 Census for Arkansas. She was married to Amos Calvin McCain, a son of William McCain. Really am hoping that someone out there can connect with her.

His name was definitely Walter. Wallis on the earlier census may have been a nickname. Wonder where the Cannons got "Walker" from.

I omitted the 1930 census.

Rockford, Coosa Co., Alabama
Gann, William T. wm 27, married 1929-30, TN TN TN
Gann, Kathleen L. wf 17 married 1929-30 AL AL AL
McCain, Walter B. w, 58 widow, married age 23 AL AL AL

Kathleen would be Walter's daughter, shown as 11 in 1920 though not on the 1910 census.

I had a lot of relatives who lived all around them so I was wondering if they were some kin.

The Alabama Death Index shows Walter B. McCain died at Rockford 10 Nov 1933, age 61 years 3 months 23 days. It lists his spouse as "Hadie," probably a nickname for Havannah unless he had remarried in the preceding three years. Film number 1908513, reference number cn 21887. Maybe you could get his death certificate and that would tell more.

Not to be confused with Walter Tipman McCain of Clay Co., b. 1870-71 at Lineville, Clay Co., who died 4 March 1929 at Talladega, son of Henry Daily McCain and Margaret (Mosteller) McCain and grandson of Seaborn McCain.

She was the daughter of Walker or Walter B. McCain born 1872-73 and wife Havanna (Adams), daughter of Simon and Martha (McEwen) Adams. The 1910 census shows her father as Wallis while the 1920 census shows his name as Walter. A researcher of the Adams & McEwen families lists his name as Walker McCain and says born 1872, died 1933.

1910 census for Coosa Co., AL:
Wallis B.
McCain/ Mcane Mystery photo

Hello
I do not have McCain ancestry but I have a photo I am trying to identify of that includes McCain school children. The photo was probably taken during the late 1800s or early 1900s. I think it was taken in Utah. Possibly California. Two are my Merrill relatives but their names dont show up on the back. I am wanting to know the location and possible date of the photo so I can identify my relatives and would appreciate any help.

One childs name is Willie McCain. It is written as Willie Mcane. There is also another child that shares the same last name. Possibly a sibling of Willie. Contact me and I will email you the photo if you can't view it now. There is a list of about 30 other names including: Stanton, Brigs, Gray, Anderson, Mayre,Worthington,Bockbolt, Vere, Pendelton, Allen, Case x2, Carter, Arnold, Wooley, Hanson, Nelson, Olsen, Berkinshaw, Jenningsand Wilkinson.

Tom, the Jane McCain who died in Shelby Co, AL ca 1818 was the wife of Robert McCain who may/or may not be a son of the Robert McCain who was a son of Hugh of the Waxhaws. Robert, son of Hugh, died in Maury Co, TN in 1812. If Elizabeth Nutt(?) was his 2nd wife, then the Robert McCain and wife, Jane, who both died in Shelby Co, AL in the early 18 hundreds, could have been a grandson of Hugh of the Waxhaws.
Lawrence

My first thought was also, Alexander's daughter Jane, born Nov 15, 1803. However, according to Lawrence Maynard's "Hugh McCain of the Waxhaws" this Jane married Richard Wright Steele and continued to live in what's now Union County, NC and is buried at Tirzah Cemetery along with many more McCains in the Waxhaw area.

Joseph Nutt has no child named Jane per the above mentioned genealogy. However, he has a child named William born in 1803 with no further information.

And, there is no Culberson mentioned in this genealogy.

Robert McCain, son of Hugh had a daughter Jane born in 1797 who married a Henry Cox. She died in 1818 in Shelby Co., Alabama.

Don't know if this helps.

Tom

Thanks for verifying the names of the children and Hugh and Eleanor. I have the same sons and the daughter Eleanor but also have a daughter Jane that was born in 1775 between Andrew and Joseph. I have a range of births from 1753 to 1781. Do you know if all of the children were born in North Carolina? It appears that after they married that they stayed in Mecklenburg County, NC. This is not my direct line, but Hugh is a nephew of my ancestor.

The 7 sons you have are correct. There was also one daughter
named Eleanor. They were all the children of Hugh Sr and Eleanor Nutt.

I have names for 7 children, but am still not certain if Eleanor Nutt is the mother of all 7. Plus, there are no girls listed, so I may be missing some more children unless he only had boys.

- William S. McCain
- John S. McCain
- Robert McCain
- Hugh McCain Jr.
- James McCain
- Andrew McCain
- Joseph Nutt McCain (I guess that one is pretty self explanatory. :-))
Do you have a list of the seven children of Hugh McCain and Eleanor Nutt? I have 9 listed but may have some of them wrong.

I show a Mary Rufner, b. 1871, d. 1912, wife of Harvey McCain, b. 1874, d. 1938 in my tree. Would this be the Rufner you're talking about?
