Ok, everyone, here's what i've been up to. We've all been perplexed as to the origin of "our" James McCain, who was married to Sarah Sallie King. We can confirm that a James Sarah were married in 1802 in KY, but James' DOB has been the object of much speculation. Now then, had James been the son of Hugh McCain, Jr. and Isabella Baskin, who were married in Jan., 1787, he probably wasn't born in 1785-6, as was thought (he'd have been illegitimate...not unheard of, even back then, but nevertheless...) Hugh Jr. Isabella had their first child, Andrew, in Nov. of 1787. Anyway, this James was (I found out...will document source as soon as I can find it in this pile o' papers..)born in 1802, and needless to say, could not be the father of William Delaney McCain, born in 1811.
Hugh Sr., had a son named James, born in 1763. This would've made him around 48 when Wm. Delaney was born. Again, not unheard of, but...also, the only child i've been able to find of this particular James is Alexander Hamilton McCain.
Now for the good stuff...
Hugh Sr. (b. 1729) had a son named Robert (b. 1759) who had a son named James. This James was born in 1788, making him 33 when Wm. Delaney was born. Somewhere in all of these papers I had some documentation that when James and Sarah were married in 1802, his father was listed as Robert. I have further info. that Robert's wife was possibly named Elizabeth Nutt (small world...), if not Nutt, then at least Elizabeth (maybe! You know how this stuff goes...)
