It sounds like this may be my great grandfather who was married to Addie. My grandmother, Selma Mays, had a sister named Ellen who I believe may have died at an early age. Selma married George Browning and they had my father, Clayton Carroll Browning (went by the name Carroll). Another Mays girl married James Browning (George's brother). Does any of this sound familiar?

Dorothy,
I asked my mother and she really wasn't sure, but I'll ask her sisters to see if they remember anything. I am guessing that the two people I found on the SSDI who passed away in Sullivan County TN might be them. The birth year is right for Ethel.
Ethel Mays - b. Aug 11, 1907 d. May 1983 in Kingsport
James Mays - b. June 20, 1901 d. Nov. 1974 in Kingsport

I have done some searching - with no luck - and was hoping to find these two buried together as husband and wife in a cemetery in that area. My next step is to send off for Ethel's SSN application and see if her parents are Francis Mowl and Eli Wilder. Any info you can share or leads you may have would be appreciated. I'm pretty sure they never had children as it is said in the family that Ethel left everything to a neice. (not in my line)
Gail

Does anyone on this board have a connection to Jim/James Mays and Ethel Wilder Mays? Ethel was my ggAunt - daughter of Francis Mowl Wilder and Elijah/Elbert Wilder. i believe them to be in the Sullivan County Tennesse area or nearby counties. Ethel was born and Raised in the Cumberland Gap areas of Lee County, VA, Harlan & Bell County Kentuck and Claibourne County Kentucky. My Grandmother did not think her Aunt Ethel and Uncle Jim had any children.
Thanks,
Gail

Carter Hill Marriage Question

I'm researching Carter Hill (1805 - late 1800s) who married Nancy T Mayes (Mays) on 26 Sep 1839 in Oglethorpe, GA. I've got a fair bit about their kids, but need more on them.

To make matters more confusing, a lot of posted pedigrees list Carter as having a first wife, Dorcas Tabitha Hosch. I haven't been able to find any factual evidence for this--nor has anyone (that I've found) posted their sources or reasoning for this belief.

Can anyone tell me:
--If and how it's known/thought that Carter and Dorcus were married.
--Anything you know about Carter's or Nancy's parents (including sources or reasoning)

Thanks!!
