Rites Set For Man Murdered With Axe

-Funeral services for Perchy F. Jarrell, who was killed Sunday by an
axe allegedly wielded by Freeman Collins, 21 years old, were to be
held Tuesday afternoon at the Jarrell home on Joe's Creek, Boone Countynty.

Burial will be in Mayes Cemetery.

Surviving are the widow and nine children.

Collins is a prisoner in the Boone County jail in Madison and is to
receive a preliminary hearing soon. He is reported by A.W. Garnett,
Boone County prosecutor, to have been convicted several times for law
infractions.

Charleston Daily News, August 14, 1930:

Freeman Collins, 21 years old, Boone County Youth, was in the county
jail here awaiting transportation to the state penitentiary where he
will serve a life sentence for the murder of Perchy F. Jarrell, 45
years old, in July. Collins was found guilty of murder by a jury in
circuit court last night, but was spared the death penalty when the
jury recommended that mercy be extended. Five witnesses for the state
testified that Collins had attacked Jarrell with an axe as the latter
lay on the ground sleeping. Collins himself, however, asserted that
Jarrell had assaulted him when he went to where he was lying and that
Jarrell was armed with a knife. Collins exhibited a knife which he
said was Jarrell's. In rebuttal testimony, that state placed
witnesses on the stand who said that the knife did not belong to
Jarrell and another who declared that Collins had borrowed the knife
from him after the killing.
