I'm looking for info on a John Martter/Marter who settled in Linton Twp., Coshocton Co., OH. I've found documents saying the family was from France, and others saying from Germany. I haven't been able to find his wife, or his birth and death dates. I have found three children: John Martter b. 12-9-1839 m. 1861 Mary Roof, Frances P. Martter b. 2-22-1844 m. 1869 Elizabeth Hamer, and Christinna Martter b. 4-7-1842 m. a Lakin. All the children were born in Linton Twp., I'm pretty sure from the Bacon Run Area. Any info is welcomed, or if you think your line may be connected, please respond. I descend from John and Mary Roof Martter.

The family moved from the census township of Forks, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania to Kansas in October 1870, homesteading in Mitchell County. 1920 Federal Census, daughter Mary Repke(Rupeka,Rupke) Bauer Thurs Anderson and brother Jacob Wentz, would indicate their father's birthplace was Friesland and mother's birthplace was Bavaria.

Adam Henry or Heinrich Wentz, born Sept 22, 1852,(Lycoming County)Sulllivan County, PA, is lost to time after the 1870 Federal Census, Forks, Sullivan County, PA.
Dear Andrea,

Re your last regarding the Zulu connection I have now proved that this connection DOES exist but you have to go back to Pirbright, Surrey in 1750s for the connection to the MARTER line from William MARTER the farmer who was born in 1751 in Woking, the son of James MARTER of Horsell born 1710. William was the younger brother of Richard MARTER/MARTYR born 1745 in Pirbright who had a son Richard MARTER (Reverand) whose youngest son was Richard James Combe MARTER of the Zulu Wars.

Tony MARTER
tonymarter@aol.com

My father, Edward Carlton Marter, told me years ago, that our original family name was Van Marter. He said they dropped the Van when they moved to Canada. He was born in Winipeg in or about 1923 and his father Edward Carlton Marter died before he was born from injuries sustained in the war.

I am trying to track down any information about my family to pass on to my children as my parents and grandparents are all deceased.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jan, That message was posted some time ago I believe. Since then, other Marter family members are sure the Zulu connection does not belong with us. I have put away family tree for some time now, but have recently been told a very good contact in our Marter family, is Jack Marter of Seaford. I have not been in touch with him at all (this is the first I've heard of him), so not sure if he can help you at all. I think he'd be your best bet at this time. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Some of the names you mentioned do not show up in our tree.

I'm very interested in you enquiry - reasons are;

My Father George William Cocks (Cock) told me that our great great grand father was in the Zulu war...we have just smiled when he told us.

My fathers mother - my nan cocks christian name was Hilda, I was told her maiden name was Brown - but have not found any record of her - her birth would be around 1900+. She lived in Ascot - Sunningdale with her husband Frederick (Fredk) Ernest Cock (Cocks). His father was Fredk G Cock born about 1869 Ascot Berkshire.

Can you let me know if this info is any help please?

Many Thanks
Yan Cocks

Hello. Barbe MARTER was born in 1836 in BEINHEIM, ALSACE, FRANCE to FRANCOIS ANTOINE MARTER & JEANNE METZ. I have lots of Joseph MARTER's but none born in 1830. I do not make any connections to any of the other people. I can not find a BLEINHEIM in ALSACE or any place else in FRANCE. Thank You.

Hello,
My Marter line starts in Germany and comes to the US and settles in Vincennes, In. Family oral history said that Joseph Marter and two brothers came to America. One brother went west and one to the south. Joseph Marter was born 19 Mar 1820 at Bleinheim, Alsace, Prussia. Married Elizabeth Schmidt on 26 Apr 1854 in Vincennes, Indiana and died 2 Jan. 1900 in Vincennes, Indiana. They had 10 Children. Mary was Elizabeth daughter that she bought to this marriage. Pauline Barbara "Polly" who married Benedict Fritch, Elizabeth C. who married Daniel Wolfe, John James who married Matilda Convery(He was my Grandfather), Ella Helen who married unknown Gilmore, Emil Charles who married Cora R. Reel, Christine Laura who married Lucas Jansen, Katie A. who married William E. Smith, Anna M. who married Samuel A. Adams, (Katie & Anna were twins) & Joseph Francis who married Lizzie F. Westfall. As you can see some of the names you are looking for are similer to the ones that are in my line. Don't know if there could be a connection or not. Let me know if this helps you. I can give more dates if that would help. I am reseaching the Marter line also. My maiden name was Marter.

John had a brother Joseph who both immigrated to US from Hungary. Myrnie and John's children were Bill, Rosemary, Jack, Jim and Patrick (died at age 13). Grandpa was living with us when he died in Milwaukee. All children are now deceased except for my mom (Rosemary). Nice to meet you cousin! Mary

who was wife, mary caldow?

In 1816, Thomas Peter Marter married Mary Caldow. There were four young sons all born
before 1816. Were they the sons of Thomas from a prior marriage? Or did Mary Caldow have them from a prior marriage? She was 26 in 1816, Thomas was in his early 40s. If Thomas sired them, who was their mother. They were all born in London but can find no record of their birth. And can find NO info.
on Mary Caldow. Was that her maiden name?
Or was that a married name? Does anyone know? The marriage in 1816 took place in
London. Help! Beverly
