When I reread your message again the name "Glanford" jumped out at me. I found a death record for a Hettie Malcolm, deceased 15 March, 1891 in York. The record says she was born in Glanford. I wondered if this could actually be Nettie (the original document is in pretty bad shape) who we always understood passed away either in childbirth or when Andrew Reginald (born 29 Jan. 1891)was an infant. Her marriage certificate states she was born in Caledonia. I haven't been able to locate Glanford, and I while I assume your mention of Glanford was citing a name it seems like quite a coincidence. Any thoughts?

Thanks. I may be on the wrong track then. We thought our John was from Scotland by way of Ireland where his wife Ann and eldest son John were born. Gribbon was the married name of the eldest daughter Anne (she lived with her parents for a while after marriage according to cencus records; later on when she was with her husband her brother Andrew was also part of her household). To many Annes, Johns and Andrews, and not enough exact dates and locations unfortunately.

I was helping Ross find his Ann Wilson b. Glanford who married a John Malcolm located in north Norfolk. I gave him the data I found yesterday. (We did find his lady).
While I was at the archives I found 2 family Malcolm histories & I did see the name Gribbon mentioned. His line is John Malcolm s/o Charles & Elizabeth. Charles & Elizabeth are here in 1852 he is 48 she is 43 both were to have been born in upper Canada. I am away for 3 weeks but when I get home I will copy anything pertinate for you. Angie

I am sure of the date - Andrew Reginald Malcom Malcolm, born January 29, 1891 in York, Ontario to Andrew Reginald Malcolm and Eleanor Annette Malcolm. On his marriage certificate to my grandmother he just lists Toronto as the birthplace but hte date is the same. The birth was registered by Esther Malcolm, Andrews sister and the youngest of seven children of John and Anne Malcolm. In the last few days I've stayed up late and found marriage records for three of Johns daughters (Anne, Esther, and Mary) so now I need to look through records for the Murphy, Hendry and Gribbon families. It's a bit much for a beginner. So far I have found John and Annes death certificates; located the family on the 1871, 81, and 91 cencus records; I am pretty sure I have Nettie (Eleanor's) death certificate from March of 1891, Andrew II's marriage certificate, and there are some business records putting the elder and younger Andrews and Andrew Sr's brother William in Guelph in 1915 - 18 or so. Andrew came to the states around 1922, supposedly illegally, and never returned. I don't have any line on the younger John Malcolm, born around 1856 just before they left Ireland. I have a cencus records showing the Nettie Martin family household but not much else on them.

If you think I have any info that would be of help please let me know. What is the name of the person you are looking for, if it is not poor ettiquete to ask?

Yes, these are my people. I think it was Nettie (after her middle name Antoinette) and one record has her as Hettie. So far no line on Norman at all. Family history has it that Eleanor died a few months afther the first child (Andrew Reginald) and his father later remarried. We can't find any record of the second marriage and presumably Norman was a product of that marriage. Norman and the second marriage are the big mystery for our family. The child Andrew (my grandfather) was raised by the Martin family but after coming to the States broke off all contact with Ontario relatives. We did find out that he married Edna Lillian Crew a few years before he left - I don't know if my father or grandmother knew about the first wife, or if she was still living when he crossed the border. I am helping another gentleman with his Ontario Malcolms. I will help you also but I need more info. Where was your Andrew born? are you sure of the date (1891)? I find no Andrew in 1901 or 1911 that has parents Andrew & Eleanor. What I do is from the birth find were they were born and follow the census back. Instead of asking the same tired questions on the message boards or reading through the tangled mass of unverified "facts" confusing everyone on the typical genealogy sites, GET YOUR DNA TESTED. It's more worthwhile and will help everyone else at the same time.

John Wallace Malcolm's parents were Sarah and John Malcolm. They had another son named Norman born in 1892 and a daughter named Annie born in 1904.

Lillie mae and Wallace had a son named George Robert born in 1912.

I dont really have much more than what I listed originally. I do know that another of Elizabeths brothers ended up here in NZ tail end of the 1800s also and had lots of children. One of his decendants contacted me a couple of years ago and she was chasing our elusive Malcolm line also. I will see if I can find out who she ended up in contact with but I do recall it was a decendant of Elizabeths, so effictively your line. She was in Australia I know that much and was an older woman perhaps even in a rest home? The information she had I am sure I have here somewhere. I will try and find it for you over the weekend. This is the first time I have used ancestry.co.uk, but I am looking for the history of the Malcolm family too. I could not believe your note when I read that Elizabeth Malcolm married Frederick Wharton. Well, he was my Great Grandfather! His son too, was called Frederick and was the Chief Chemist to the Mint of China during the Boxer Revolution (early 20thc.) He married Juliana Stokes had Lionel, Joan, Mary and my father, Geoffrey. I was therefore 'Jane Wharton' before my marriage. So I am at last getting to grips with the Malcolm clan and need to know more and more! I use the Malcolm tartan for reeling, so need to justify myself for doing this! Can you help me please?

I have been able to trace my family back to Milan T Malcolm who was born in Galesburg, Illinois, in August 1865. I have some unverified information that his parents came from Scotland. Milan was my Grandfather through Charles W. Malcolm.

My great grandfather lived in the lighthouse and they farmed there. What grew on the island was twice the size of what grew on the mainland. I don't know his name. His son was Wallace Malcolm who moved to Everett Massachusetts and had 5 children during the 1910 and 20's. They were Ruth, Grace, Thames, Lloyd and Warren.

Hi, I have been trying to find the name of Joseph S. Malcolm's (B. OCT 1882 D. 1953 in WV)father but have not had any luck. I found his death cert but his father is listed as "Doc Malcolm" his mother is Matilda Moore. I found Matilda in an 1900 census and it had a boy named Josiah who was born in the same month and year as Joseph, so maybe the census taker made a mistake. Joseph's father must have died early because it listed Matilda as the head of the household. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Joseph was born in Nicholas Co, WV and died in Kanawha Co, WV.

James Anderson Woollen, CSA musician, and wife Mrs. Susan Caroline Malcolm Woollen, are both in the 1890's book, "Lee Family of Virginia" by Edmund Jennings Lee, because their daughter Lillian Elizabeth "Muttie" Woollen of Old Salem, wed book salesman Henry Lee, the son of Charles Carter Lee, older brother of Gen. Robert Edward Lee, Sr., CSA. One of the children in the book is LtCol Robert Henry "Marse" Lee. U.S. Coast Artillery, West Point class of 1912. His first posting was to Fort McHenry, Baltimore, where he wed first Miss Parron and had daughter Rosa Parron Lee who is not mentioned in his Richmond, Virginia obituary. He is buried at the Episcopal Church, Lee's Landing, Powhattan Co., Va., almost within sight of his grandfather Charles Carter Lee's home "Windsor". LtCol. Lee left a second wife widow in Richmond, but no other children. I seek the fate of daughter Rosa Parron Lee; they may have been estranged? A descendant of George W. Alfred G. Malcolm, born c. 1906

James was born 7 Aug. 1880 in Paddington, Mdx. Married in 1903 to Alice Isabel Welford in Hampstead. One son, Alfred George Malcolm, born abt 1906.

He and his family moved to Canada. James Alex. F. Malcolm is listed as serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWI. LIved at 82 Elgin Street, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and later at Belt Flats, 589 Simcoe St. South, Oshawa, Ontario.

He enlisted in the 116 battalion of the Canadian Infantry on September 11, 1915 in Oshawa, Ontario and was in France from October 1, 1916 to January 28, 1917. He was in the 2nd Battalion, C Company.
He suffered frostbite and had an amptation of his toe and was in poor health.

I have been unable to find a death cert. for James and do not know if he died in Ontario or went back to England. Ditto for his wife.

A family mystery: a letter found after the death of my father- in - law asking about the adoption of an Alfred G. Malcolm by his aunts. The reply is below.

After that marriage Hattie Hicks Malcolm married Albert Partlow February 24, 1891 in Lebanon, Missouri. There is also a marriage record for John G. Malcolm who was married to a Mary E. Molesdale, that marriage took place October 18, 1882 in Salem, Dent County, Missouri. John Garner Malcolm and Hattie Hicks were my great grandparents. Kemnay and London Connections

Hello Malcolm hunters!

Have you come across a family in London that belongs to me.
My Malcolms were all born in Kemnay, Aberdeenshire to Alexander Malcolm and Majorie Kemp.

They were Alex Malcolm born 1763-1813 who became a gardener in Kent working for an unknown William Malcolm 1740-1798
William 1766-1838 a gardener also
Harry 1768 took over the shop in 1838
My 2 x great grandfather 1774-1842 a copper in Kent, he returned to Kemnay and married Anne Laig 1822, he may have already been married prior in London and had children.

I have Alex Malcolms will at 1813 which states brothers
James and John still living in Kemnay, and George and William living in London.

Other brothers were David, Robert and Andrew who I have not found data on.

Hi I am looking for a great uncle. His name was William Malcolm the son of Alex Malcolm and Isabella Littlejohn. He was a farm servant in the 1881 Census in Aberdeenshire. But I can not find him in the 1991 or 1901 Census.
Perhaps he left Scotland.

It would be helpful if you posted a bit more information, such as the ancestors, etc.

My Malcoms came from Stirlingshire in Scotland.

I have Alfred Steven, then Thomas, (emigrated in 1852 on the "John Davies" to Australia, Vic), then his ancestors were Thomas, Thomas, & Thomas(I think).

Most probably Archibald isn't a relation. it isn't a name I can find in the tree anywhere, plus AFAIK, my lot didn't come to NSW until 1912 when Leeton opened up.

But, since they were just one of the generations of ancestors that seem to set out to single handedly populate the country, you never know.

He married Samatha Sexton 1822

notes for Eliakim :
-the second birth recorded in Oakland Township
-A united Empire Loyalist. Involved in "Duncombe's Rebellion" in 1837. ( I have more information on this as well)
-laid out and surveyed the village of Scotland, Ontario.
-He was the first Reeve of Oakland and the first Warden in 1853-1854 of Brant County.

Eliakim and Samatha are both buried in the Scotland United Cemetary, Oakland, Ontario.

Ancestry sought for Duncan Malcolm (b. ca. 1720 in Aberdeenshire) who came to America about 1774.

"The Malcolm Family," John Karl Malcolm of Ann Arbor Michigan (1950), as quoted by Mr V. Alexander of Ontario according to http://www.geocities.com/j_mgage/fam-pages/wardwell.html: DUNCAN MALCOLM (McCallum, McCollum, MacColum, or McCullin) from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, came to America with his ten children about 1774. No record has been found of his wife. According to tradition Duncan was born about 1720. He was a weaver by trade. The family settled first at Watermill, near Southhampton, Long Island, New York (Long Island Cencus of 1776); removed to Saybrook, Conn., in 1776, and later to Middlefield, Conn. It is recorded in Savage's "Refugees from Long Island" that after the Battle of Long Island in 1776,"Dunkin McCollom, 6 persons, 1 lode of goods, 2 hogs," were transported on the sloop "Dove", Capt. Elijah Mason, from Sag Harbour, L.I. to Saybrook, Conn. Probably Duncan settled up the Connecticut River, about Middlefield, where there were sympathizers and where his daughter, Janet, later married Giles Miller, Jr. In "Connecticut Men In The Revolution" there is a record that "Duman McCullin of Saybrook" was in the Second Regiment, Connecticut Line under Col. Herman Swift. FINLAY MALCOLM, the son of DUNCAN was born in 1750, in Aberdeenshire Scotland. He died Sept. 18, 1829, and was buried in the old cemetary at Oakland, Ontario, Canada. Finlay Malcolm was a sea captain. He owned a trading vessel that plied between Scotland and America. Finlay set out for himself early in life as he is recorded in 1769 at Penobscot, now Castine, Maine, as an early settler on the northern bay, "Majobigwaduce." He is recorded in his Majesties service at Fort George during the seige by the Continentals in 1729. About 1769, Finlay and his brother John were settlers of Northern Bay. He was also a member of the Penobscot Association Grant, at St. Andrew's, in 1784. Finlay was a United Empire Loyalist and received a grant of land for his adherence to the King during the American Revolution. At Castine, Maine, Finlay met and married Tryphena Wardwell. She was the daughter of Captain Daniel Wardwell of York, Me. Tryphena was born in 1761 at York, Me. and died in Oakland Township, Oxford (now Brant) County, Ontario, on Jan. 16, 1813. She was buried in the old Oakland cemetery. In 1798, Finlay with his wife, Tryphena, and their family moved to Upper Canada. Before leaving Penobscot, Me., the records show that he sold out his real estate holdings amounting to several hundred acres."

My great-great-great grandfather was Joseph L Malcolm b. approx 1842, who married Martha Eilizabeth Lowrance. Although I know that they were already in the US when they were married, I have photos from Port Barmasym Bay ? taken in 1896, and of a Carleton in Kendrum Burn Lochearmhead, another of Carl with a sister Jeanie and Mrs Malcolm. Perhaps the most significant photo I have is of a W R Malcolm and on the back shows his date of birth as 1st of March 1844. The house was located in Crosslee Village. Perhaps he is a cousin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello if you're still out there. We could have a connection. My grandfather William Malcolm, born ca 1861 in Scotland, left Banff ca. 1878 to join British Army in India (ran away from home basically!) and wound up in Victoria, Australia on the railways a decade or so later. I'm just starting this family tree business, fortunately a cousin has 'done' my mother's side of the family. Maybe my grandfather was related to your connections in Banff. We seem to have a string of Williams and Alexanders on my side but haven't most Malcolms??!!??
