I am looking for the family of Robert Malcolm b.1803 / Louisa Ann Streeter b.1811. All children b. St Martins in the field, Westminster, Eng. Robert John b.1834 (Eng-NZ), Thomas b.1836, Louisa b.1837, Alexander b.1839, Margaret b.1840, William Henry b.1843 (Eng- NZ), Elizabeth b.1844 m.Frederick Wharton Eng, Edward b.1849 (Eng-NZ) and Mary Ann b.1842. In a letter from my g.grandfather Robert John dated 1881 to his niece he says that Mary Ann has made a wretched mistake with her marriage and in going to New York with her husband.(Unable to find the husbands name). She lived in the US and had a daughter c.1874. We can not find anything more on Mary Ann, Margaret, Thomas, Louisa and Alexander who after his parents death became his siblings guardian upon turning 21, last heard living in Bermingham 1862. Their Father Robert Malcolm (b.1803 & 1/13 children) was the son of William John Malcolm c.1755 and Margaret Peever b.1768 Oswestry, Salop, (dau. of William Peever and Mary, nee Smith). Again all their 13 children were born at St Martins. We have come to a dead and all over the place really. No idea where William Malcolm came from Eng, Sct, Wales ?? Absolutly any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read this small book.
Happy Hunting
Glenda

Hello Glenda
I have found some of your family on the 1841 London census.
Robert Malcolm 35 Publican
Louisa 30 not born here
Margaret 8 mths born here
also Caroline Streeter 15 as family servant.
living Warwick St. St. Martins London

I cannot find the other children on the census but the index is only for London area. Louisa according to the I.G.I. was born Croyden Surrey.
On the BMD index there is a mary Ann who married Robert Charles Balls in 3rd qtr (Sept) 1857. Could this be yours. she was about 16/17 yrs.

Hi Peggy,
That could very well be Mary Ann. Very young though. In a letter from my g/g to another of his sisters dated 1881 he says "Mary Ann seems to have made a wretched mistake as regards her marriage, well let us hope he will do better in New York. Itruely feel sorry for her. I quite expected to have seen her out here" He had been in NZ since early late 50s early 1860s. Her father Robert died 1848, Mother Louisa 1856. The 1851 census (after Rbt died) Louisa has 2 children with her at the hotel. Elz, wlm Henry & Edward are listed 52 Hawley Sq,Margate, Kent, Private school maybe? Wonder if Alex.12 & Mary Ann 7 were sent to Louisas mothers or such, being a hotel situation? Caroline Steeter is Louisas sister I think. Was left 150. pound in her will.Very large family with the same names handed down is very hard to track down!
Thank you so much for taking the time Peggy.
Greatly appreciated!

Hi Again... Mary Ann Malcolm was born 06/02/1842 so she would indeed have been 16years of age.Very young to be married, at least by todays average age, but both her parents had passed away by 1857 so it is very possible.

Hello Glenda,
This is the first time I have used ancestry.co.uk, but I am looking for the history of the Malcolm family too. I could not believe your note when I read that Elizabeth Malcolm married Frederick Wharton. Well, he was my Great Grandfather! His son too, was called Frederick and was the Chief Chemist to the Mint of China during the Boxer Revolution (early 20thc.) He married Juliana Stokes had Lionel, Joan, Mary and my father, Geoffrey. I was therefore 'Jane Wharton' before my marriage. So I am at last getting to grips with the Malcolm clan and need to know more and more! I use the Malcolm tartan for reeling, so need to justify myself for doing this! Can you help me please?

Hi Jane

I dont really have much more than what I listed originally. I do know that another of Elizabeths brothers ended up here in NZ tail end of the 1800s also and had lots of children. One of his decendants contacted me a couple of years ago and she was chasing our elusive Malcolm line also. I will see if I can find out who she ended up in contact with but I do recall it was a decendant of Elizabeths, so effictively your line. She was in Australia I know that much and was an older woman perhaps even in a rest home? The information she had I am sure I have here somewhere. I will try and find it for you over the weekend. My email is

Cheers Glenda Malcolm
