Lore DNA Testing Opportunity

I wanted to do two things relative to DNA and genealogy.

I want to make sure all of you know that we do have a Lore DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Lore where Lore men can test to see which Lore families they match.

Second, I want to let you know about a new autosomal DNA testing opportunity. You can see the info here on the blog:
http://the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-23andme-auto...

Roberta Estes
Lore Family DNA Project Administrator (volunteer)
robertajestes@att.net

It's been a long time since you posted your message; however, I've only just come across it. I descend from Seth Lore's son, Daniel and am in the process of trying to compile information for my DAR application, since Seth and Daniel both served in the Revolutionary War and have been assigned DAR numbers.

I came across a result in familysearch.org that showed Daniel's wife to be Eve Dalles. I don't know if you already have the info now, but if not, you can add Eve's surname to your records.

sorry it took so long to get back to you our computer crashed and had to be trashed. thank you! thank you! thank you so very much. as i said i couldn't get the connection i needed and believed there to be. as both of my parents are dead i can no longer ask them questions. i have been relying on my memory of things my grandma frances used to say. for some reason no one wanted to talk about their histories. i will take any and all info you are willing to share, photos too. WOW! i am so excited.
also i have been inquiring about grandma frances' people. its as if she never existed. i found her mentioned in the 1900 census as living with her father and mother, David and Lydia HUNTER in commercial township. she had a 1/2 sister named jeanette. jeanette was not lydia's child. they were living in commercial twp cumberland county.
once again, i'd like to thank you for any and all info. at last i can prove their existence.
my address is: 509 main st., cedarville nj 08311. my phone # is 856-367-7144. i will gladly pay postage or you can e-mail me at this e-mail addy.
sincerly thankful,
carol (LORE) gilliard

The name Lohr you mentioned appears in PA & not in the Cumberland County Lore family. Also haven't found the name Dock or Duck linked to the South Jersey Lores.

Sara Robbins Hoffman

Hello !

My Grandmother was Maria (Merlo) Valenti m.t. Salvatore Lo Re. They were from Santo Stephano di Camastra, Messina, Sicily. They were a matched marriage. My Grandpa, Salvatore Lo Re came over to the States in the early 1900's. He was to land in N.Y., but traded his ticket with a man who was to go to Sarnia (Canadian port). My Grandma came over on ship with her sister an brother, and told to go on to Canada.
While at Ellis Island, my grandpa's name was changed by the Americans to "Lore".

My grandpa was 10 years younger than my grandma. His DOB was March 12, 1886. His Canadian Naturalization papers are dated July 9, 1929; however, he was residing in Canada for many years prior. He died in a work accident there in his 40's and left my grandma with 12 children.

Hi Carol,

Thank you for the inquiry on the Lores. I just came across your post today. You are descended from the line of John Lore b. 1808-1881 who married Rhoda Cobb Shaw widow of Samuel Smith. They lived at Newport, NJ.
Your line through John & Rhoda's son:
Arick Cobb Lore 1840-1908 wife Eleanor Osborne.
Milton Davis Lore 1881-1934 wife Frances Wilkins Hunter.
David McKelvey Lore 1920-1979 wife Carolyn Gant.
I understand your difficulty in finding a connection for your Lore line. When I did the Lore book I was unable to link John Lore b. 1808 to the correct branch of the Cumberland Co. Lores. My research has continued since then & I'm still without a reliable source or documentation for this John Lore. However, I strongly believe he is related to the rest of the Downe Township Lores & that they all have a common ancestor, John Lory 1612 of Cornwall, England. I didn't want to link your John Lore to just any Lore without some form of documentation in the book. I do mention on pg 25 my difficulty with the various John Lores, one being John Lore husband of Rhoda Shaw. We are also related through the Shaw family. I'm a descendant of Rhoda Shaw Smith Lore's sister Elizabeth Shaw Hines. They were the daughters of Henry Shaw Esq. of Newport, NJ & his wife Tabitha Cobb. I have quite a lot of information on the descendants of John & Rhoda Lore of Newport, NJ. I'd be happy to provide you with any of the material I have on this line & also any photos I have of them.
Sara

I have not found a real connection between them There may be one and I have just not found it.

I did find a daughter of Augustus Lore and wife, Dealpha, on the 1880 Washington Co., MO census.
In researching the Lores in Missouri I have not found any connection between the Lores in Osage Co., MO. and the ones in Washington Co., MO. In my database I do have an Ara Josephine Lore (d/o Augustus b. ca. 1843 and wife, Dealpha, also b. ca 1843) on the 1880 Brenton Twp. Washington Co., MO census Dist. 168. This Ara Josephine Lore was b. ca 1876.

There may be a connection between these two lines and I have just not found it. I will be glad to correspond with you.
Hi, I don't know if there is any connection, but my family is a mystery so I am checking everything. I have pictures(no names) from several different areas of Pa.,including Lycoming. I found out I still have family in Pa. My part of the family moved to Ohio and settled in Licking Co. Through Civil War pension court depositions I found that the family member(my gr.gr. grandfather) who went by his middle name Henry, was born with the name William Henry. The early census in Ohio spelled the last name Lore but it got changed to Loar and then in 1880 after William's death, changed again to Loher. I can give more info, Please contact me if you think there might be a connection. Shelmaya@aol.com

miss hoffman,
i have read your book thoroughly and much to my surprise i found no mention of my lore family. my name is carol lore gilliard. my father was david m lore of newport nj. he was born sept 9, 1920. he died jan 7, 1979. his parents were milton d lore and francis w hunter. dad had 1 brother named milton. i have been searching exhautively for any mention of these people any where possible. my brother james o lore 3rd, located your book which i got at the bridgeton library. to no avail.
it seems as if francis and milton didn't exist. the only other info i have is francis' birth date of may 29, 1895.in 1920 they lived in downe twp, cumberland co. she died circa 1969. francis and her husband are buried in bateman memorial cemetary, newport, nj.there are no markers for either of them. i have a funeral bill for her father, david hunter, dated oct 25, 1935. he was laid out by the compton bros of port norris. francis and her lore side seems to have vanished. i cannot even trace the hunter side. i am at a brick wall again.
i had hoped your book would help shed some light, however feeble, on these people; as i would like to know who, what, where, and when.
francis' last residence was with my dad, david m lore, in pennsville nj. my dad's uncle, kenneth lore, operated a boatyard in salem nj. my dad's aunt(?) rhoda operated a store in new port nj. it seems, according to the 1900 census, that francis lived with her father, david hunter and her mother, lydia c and a sister, jeanette. jeanette is not lydia's child. suggesting this is david's 2nd marriage. at this time they are still living in commercial twp cumberland co. i have a certificate of distinguishment from the mauricetown district,no.5 in cumberland co. for a jeanette stevens, dated may 1, 1899. co superintendent- john n glasill; albert woomer, principal. i am guessing that this is francis' half sister, but cannot be certain.
most of this information has come from my baby book. i am 51 yrs old. i also have a brother, david e lore and a sister barbara e lore blanker.
i apoligize for going on and on. any help or direction you could offer would be greatly apprecited.
sincerly,
carol (jay) lore gilliard

Dave,
Possibly you misunderstood my message so I will try make it clear that the date a will is proved is not to be considered an actual death date. When I gave the date of May 26, 1772 please note I wrote it was the date the will was PROVED & not the date the will was written or a death date. Many times researchers do use the date the will was proved because they lack any other reliable source for a death date like a tombstone or a Bible record. However, in the case of William Lore we have a tombstone inscription. The date a will is proved is when it is taken before a court of law to establish its validity. The writer of any will would have been deceased by this date.

Sara

The Archives of the State of New Jersey, First Series Vol. XXXIV Calendar of Wills Vol. V pg. 319 gives the following information:
The will of William Lore of Fairfield, Cumberland Co., NJ was written on Feb. 7, 1772. The will was proved on May 26, 1772.
From the above source we know a document was filed on Feb. 28, 1781 in Cumberland Co., NJ by the executors of William Lore's estate requesting the court to allow expenses for bringing up 3 children. The children named were sons Rosil, Gideon & daughter Elizabeth.

William Lore according to his tombstone in the Dividing Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at Dividing Creek, NJ died May 2, 1772, in 32nd y. I hope these sources will be of assistance in sorting out the William Lores.
Sara
Dividing Creek, Baptist Church, Cumberland Co., , New Jersey...

So he could not write this will if he was dead ?
( 26 May 1772 - as you state ?)

Dave,

A follow up thought is that it's quite possible that the person that submitted the LDS information confused the date of William Lore's will with a birth date. William's will was written Feb. 7, 1772 & the submitter has Feb 2, 1772 as the birth date for the supposed son.
Sara
Hi Dave,

I looked at the LDS reference you gave for William Lore b. Feb. 2. 1772. I believe this information to be incorrect because there is no documentation for it. Please note the submitter gives no source for his information. First of all the will of William Lore proved May 26, 1772 doesn't name a son William Lore. Another source that indicates there was no son William is a diary written by a family member in the 1800's It gives the genealogy of the William & Elener Forigison Lore family & mentions deceased son Gideon who died as a young man but no William is recorded. After her husband's death Elenor Lore married Jonathan Sockwell. I relate to both of these families. The original diary is housed at the FHL archives at Salt Lake.

It would be convenient if this William Lore fit the one you are looking for however I don't believe you would want to link to a person that isn't actually related to you. My suggestion is you contact the submitter & ask for his documentation on William Lore.

Sara

Yes, I am interested in any information...

Also, that 1773 date could be / should be a ballpark date
meaning William may have been born anytime between 1770 to
1775, from what I seen with his family.

Just want to say, the Latter Day Saints, also have a
William - as a son of William and Eleanor ?

Dave,

I have a Lore research file sent to me from Roberta Estes that she compiled on Lores in PA. There are some William Lores mentioned in it. I didn't see one born 1773. I can send it to you if you want to review it. I will need your e-mail address. I only know of other Lores in Canada who go by the name Loree but are related to the Cumberland Co., NJ Lores & have the same ancestor John Lory b. 1612 of Cornwall, England, Saybrook Colony, CT & Southold, L.I. N.Y.
Don't know of any Lores in PA in the 1700's.
Sara

Dave,

The will of William Lore of Fairfield Township, Cumberland Co., NJ was written Feb. 7, 1772 & proved May 26, 1772. He names wife Elenor & children, Rosil, Gideon & Elizabeth. I have no knowledge of the William Lore b. Apr. 11, 1773 listed from the site you found or how the link to William Lore of Fairfield, NJ was made. William Lore of Fairfield died between Feb 7, 1772 & May 26, 1772 & the other William Lore was born Apr. 11, 1773, it apears to me impossible for the William Lore of Fairfield who died before May 26, 1772 to be the father of William Lore born Apr. 11, 1773. The birth & death dates also rule out the possibility of a posthumous birth. I have other documentation on the family of William & Elener Lore & there is no mention of a son William Lore. I hope this will be of some help to you. If there is any other information you need on the Lores of Cumberland Co., NJ, please contact me.

Sara

Dave,

William & Elenor Forgison Lore only had three children, Rosel, Gideon & Elizabeth. It's possible but I'm not aware of any Lores from Cumberland Co NJ that were in PA in 1815-1850. Testing by the Lore DNA project (Roberta Estes is the administrator) showed the Lores of Cumberland Co & her Lores from PA aren't related.
Sara
When he went to fight in the Revolution he left his wife and children in the care of his father-in-law in Maryland...but I have no idea who that was. Barbara had two brothers...John and Henry Lore.

Any information would be appreciated.

Family DNA Testing Program

Hi Cousins,

The DNA testing company that our family project is using is once again offering 6 holiday gift certificates for each surname project. This is a great time to join and be tested or to give testing as a holiday gift.

I can't talk about price on this list, but there are two certificates for a yline (paternal) 25 marker test, two for a 37 marker test and two for mtdna (maternal) testing.

These are not fully paid tests, but will reduce the cost of the test by 10-15%.

Terms of the certificates are:
1) that they be used only for new members (new kits), not upgrades,
2) that they are not valid in conjunction with any other promotion, and
3) that the kit must be ordered *and paid for* by 31 Dec 2007.
Any certificates not used by December 31st will expire, although if the kits are ordered and paid for by the, they don't expire.

You can use the certificate and purchase the kit, even if you haven't decided yet who will use it. The kits have a virtually indefinite shelf-life (until the samples are actually taken), so you could purchase a kit now and use it later.

If you are interested, please contact me offlist and I will send you the link and instructions.

Roberta Estes

I don't know anything about this court case or the people, but I do have a "George P.Lore" in my family. He was born in Knox County Ohio in 1875. His father was William G. Lore and was "adopted" or came into the family in Knox County about 1865. Possibly from New York , but not sure about that.
Don't know why he named his first son "George P. " but I'm looking for any clues to find his birth parents. Interesting that your "George P." has same name . . .
If you have any thoughts about possible family connections, please let me know.
Bobbi,

I compiled a 482 pg book "The Lores of Cumberland County, New Jersey" in 1996. It's an extensive study of the descendants of Hezekiah & Seth Lore sons of Richard Lore of Southold, LI. Richard Lore was the son of John Lory who migrated from England to Saybrook Colony, Ct & settled in Southold, LI. I'm descendant of the people you mention in your post. Please let me know if I can provide any information for you on this Lore family.

Sara Robbins Hoffman

Leaming and Lore Family

I found an article in the Persi index for Lore and ordered it. It is "A History of the Leaming Family and the Leaming House". This is from the Cape May County on Long Island New York. The Lore family marries a Compton who married a Leaming. Here are the Lore's covered, from earliest to latest. Hezekiah Lore b 1697, David L. Lore born 1740, Jonathan Lore b 1784, Elizabeth Lore b April 16 1813 fo married Charles Compson born Aug 3 1812. Their daughter Esola Compton married Reuben Hunt Leaming who lived in the Leaming house. This article was published in the South Jersey Magazine - Millville NY Vol 11 No 4 Oct 1982 if anyone wants to order the entire article. Does anyone on the list descend from this family?

Bobbi Estes

DNA Testing Results

Lore family members,

We have now had a second person do the DNA test. That person was a Lory, and they do not match the one Lore that has participated.

I would like to encourage anyone from the NJ, NY or Canadian families to test. The one Lore we have was born someplace in Canada, and moved to Ny and then to Pa in the 1830s. He married a Hill in Vermont, so kind of worked his way South. I cannot break through this brick wall, and until other Lore's test, we won't know who he might be related to. Other Lore families won't know if they are connected or not either.

The testing company where the surname project resides is giving gift certificates for some kinds of testing that must be redeemed between now and the end of December. If you are interested, please let me know. This would also make a wonderful gift for someone whose DNA would benefit your genealogy.

Bobbi Estes

Mary Ann vs Geo. P.Lore Pa 1851

Hi All, I recently picked up a few court documents from Lycoming County, Penn in 1851 that state Mary Ann Lore born about 1807, wife of John Lore filed a lawsuit against her brother-in-law George P. Lore (born about 1810, married to Catherine, had children William B., Charles H., Mary E., Phebe E., Thomas P., Lavina M., and Hannah J.). She charged him with slander. There must have been a lot of bad blood between George and Mary Ann because he publicly said a number of truly scandalous and cruel things, using words I didn't know they used in 1851. (and the lawyer providing the definitions of each word) Mary Ann was suing for $2000 which had to have been a huge sum of money. I also have a document from August 1853 that is an agreement to settle with George paying all legal fees and costs. If any family would like a copy of the transcripts let me know. It really must have been quite the scandal back then. I wonder if they were ever on speaking terms again.
