Kevin...I'm stanley davis (birthname melvin lofgren jr.) I have been trying to reach you. I'm pretty sure I am your uncle. I grew up in wichita...birthfather was melvin lofgren sr. I believe I have located him (soc.sec. match) in mesquite, texas. I live in Las Vegas now (since'98)
email adavis11@mindspring.com or phone (702) 395-7902
I have a woman who tracks down folks (relatives long missing) just to help them...she's great and charges me nothing. She's been working on this for a long time. I got your snailmail address in Berryville, AR and was going to send you a letter. I hope that you check the posts--seems like your address has changed from the highway 143 into town. I don't have your email and your phone is unlisted. Is Katrinka Lofgren Ivie your sister? If so, does she work as a rehab. specialist in Wichita? I sent an email to the place where she works, but, once again, have no phone or email for her. I tracked down Melvin Sr. with a lot of cross-checking and false leads and am pretty sure I'm right. I'll fill you in further when we talk or email. Most of these "services" charge fees, which is beyond cruel. Stephen Quintos Lofgren would be my half-brother, since I had a different birthmother in Long Beach, CA. After I left Wichita, I moved to NYC, then to the Netherlands for 4 1/2 years (my wife, Annelies, is Dutch), then Estes Park,CO from '78-'98, then Las Vegas. I'm a musician and music therapist, songwriter and recording artist and have listings on Facebook and Linkidin (sp?).
Regards, Stan (melvin lofgren jr.) davis

I doubt you are a relative. but here is some help. there is no town named nyberg in sweden. However, your ancestors were probably tenant farmers, called Torps. They lived on a piece of property owned by a wealthy land owner. The farm where they lived was called nyberg or nyborg. There were probably a few different farms called nyborg or nyberg. in the early 1800's the church for tracking purposes began requiring people to take unique last names, so they would take the name of the farm or area where they lived. I am going to guess that they came from an aggriculture area just west of lake vattern

Re: Origin of the name Lofgren

Here is a quote from Carl-Erik Johansson's introduction to Anders Persson Löfgren's Autobiography: " Ander's father, Per, took the surname of Löfgren (löf or löv meaning leafy, and tren meaning branch or twig) when he bacame a village blacksmith, as was customary in Sweden."

I have researched village records and have found that there was a village blacksmith by the name of Löfgren before Anders' father became the blacksmith. From this I have to assume that Per took over the smithy and adopted the name Löfgren for continuity or, as Mr. Johansson says, Löfgren was a common name for blacksmiths to adopt.

Craig Lofgreen

Thank you Ingela! When I spent a lot of time in Sweden, I looked for Lofgreen's. Never found any, although they may be there. I did find that Lofgren seems to be as common in Sweden as the names Johnson, Nelson or Murphy are in the US.

My great great grandfather, (John Victor, Johan Wictor) is said to have wanted to "be an American" so he added the second "e" upon landing in the US. We seem a little unique as John Victor settled in the middle of the US, and most of the Lofgreen's in Nebraska, Kansas and MO are closely related.
Deb

Searching for August Lofgreen, b. Sweden abt 1863, Son of John Victor (Johan Wictor) and Johanna.
Arrived NYC July 17 1871 and proceeded directly by train to Chicago, where the family (4 children and mother-in-law) cleared Immigration. Family spent a little time in IL before moving to Hickory Co, MO for a short while. Eventually landed in Kansas, just south of the Nebraska state line (Norton CO). John and Johanna are buried at the Spring Green cemetery, Furnas Co, NE.

August married Nellie in 1894, Furnas Co NE, then he disappears from all records. (Family story says he drowned in the Snake river.)

Let me know if any of this pops up in your line or research.
I have a William Alexander Lovgren b. 1866 in SWE. He immigrated to Minnesota around 1895. He also lived in Wisconsin. This is my wife's lineage. You wouldn't happen to have anything on him in your records? There is also another William Alexander Lovgren who immigrated to the US much later and lived also in Minnesota. I have found no link between those two yet.

Lofgren is a Swedish name which means "Leaf of the Branch." Lof is Leaf, gren is branch. The spelling of Lofgren is now spelled Lovgren is Swedish. My great grandfather, Oscar Lofgren, is from Sweden. He changed his name to Logan in the late 1890's. We aren't related, but I thought this would help you. Mike

Hi Mark!
Greetings from Sweden!
If you are a descendant of Pehr Andersson Löfgren we are very distantly related. Pehr's mother was Sissa Bengtsdotter (Anders Pehrsson Löfgren's first wife) and she was a first cousin of my mother's father's father's mother, Olu Jeppsdotter. Olu's father Jeppe and Sissa's father Bengt were brothers.

Löfgren is a very common surname in Sweden. In Sweden before 1901 you could appropriate any surname you liked (except for noble names) and just tell the vicar to write it in the church record and it was your surname after that.
Löfgren is very typical of what we call "town-names", which is to say that someone who moved into a town and became perhaps a shoemaker or some other sort of craftsman or perhaps opened a small shop would take a name like that.
Löfgren literally means leaf (löf) branch (gren); other common names of this type is Ekberg (oak mountain), Lindgren (linden branch - one of Sweden 20 most common names), Björkkvist (birch twig) - well the list goes on almost for ever.

Why the name Löfgren was originally taken I have no idea since I haven't researched this line since it is only collateral to me. The simple rerason may of course be that they just took a fancy to it.

Best regards,
Ingela

My question concerns the origin of the name Lofgren – is it a farm name?

I see the name first appear in my lineage with a Per (Pehr?) Nilsson Lofgren, son of Aldre Nils Svensson (and I believe “Aldre” is a title meaning Councilman). Per was born 17 Oct 1782, Nils was born about 1755, both of Annelov, Malmohus, Sweden.

Mark A. Pederson
If you go to Gotland be prepared for a wonderful experience. It is a very unusual place - inhabited much longer than the mainland of Sweden - evidence says 6,000 years! There is even evidence of trade between the Gotlanders and the Minoans. While I did not meet them, there are still Lofgrens living in the southern tip of Gotland. So keep digging for that information.

I will look through my records and see what else I can find for you. My grandmother was a Lofgren whose parents emigrated from Gotland. (Their cemetery monument, proudly declares they were from Gotland.) The only way I found out about them was that, like you, my father's middle name was Lofgren.

Caren

To CC,
Knute would have been my Uncle, I would like to trade information with you. If he was your husbands grandfather, I would like to know if I have any family members who are descendents of Knute. His brothers (my father) name was Nils Walter Lofgren and his
older sister was Svea Englund. Sorry for the delayed reply we have been away.
Charles LOFGREN, wife Glynn, children Jacqueline & Larry (1940)

I have just found some pictures in my parents' album of the Lofgrens. It was probably taken about 1940 in perhaps Mattoon, Ilinois or Niles, Michigan. On the back of one, it says "Jacqueline Sue, age 13 and Larry Leon, age 7" Also, below that in my mother's handwriting, "2003 Adams Street, Paducah, KY". I would like to give these to anyone who has info on this Lofgren family. You can contact me at: jacnjin@earthlink.net
