Any information on James & Mary (Gill) Lane would be appreciated. It is a family oral tradition that there is Cherokee heritage here. Have not been able to find any documentation as yet.

I have in my line James Lane, (wife Mary (Polly) Gill), b.1795 in Wake Co, NC, d. early 1847 in Robertson Co, TX age abt 51. James & Polly m. 1817 in Maury Co, TN. and went from Giles Coi, TN to Texas about 1835.
Will of James Lane, Wake Co, NC 1804 mentions above as follows:
"Item I give and bequeath to my beloved grandson James Lane son of Joel Lane at the death of my wife one negro boy the name of Randall to him and his heirs forever."
And the last paragraph: "And I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons, Joel Lane, Edmond Lane and my worthy friend Isaac Hutchens executors of thios my last will and testament..." It is signed 28 Dec 1804 and was recorded in the clerk's office of Wake County in Book H and page 4 the 17th day of May 1805.

and has an added note: "This James Lane was the brother to Joseph, Barnabas, Joel, Jessie and John Lane, sons of Joseph and Patience McKinnie Lane."

I have added info on James' family, esp. Alfred Lane, James' second son, b. 07 Mar 1827 in Giles Co, TN, m. Elizabeth Ann Goodnight 26 Jun 1851 and d. 15 Jul 1864 by indians in Palo Pinto Co, TX.

Hello Jim, yes we corresponded several years ago. I have been out of the loop, so to speak, for several years and am just getting back into researching. My ggrandmother was Mary, sister to Alfred. Thank you for the additional information. This will help me considerably. I am descended from Alfred+Elizabeth (Goodnight) Lane.

On the 1850 U.S. Census, in Robertson Co., TX the Lane family's last name is incorrectly spelled "LAIN" on the 1850 Census. Mary is a widow raising five children.

Alfred was a Texas Ranger and cattleman. His wife was the sister of Charles Goodnight. On the 1860 U.S. Census we find Alfred Lane+family, and Wesley Sheek+new wife (Alfred's younger sister) + Wesley's step-brother, Charles Goodnight (who is also Alfred Lane's brother-in-law) all on the same page, page 19.

Since you list surnames of Lane and Key, it would seem you may be descended from Mary (Lane) Key b: Abt 1835 (Henry Co.) TN d: 1858 (Robertson Co.) TX.

Yes, she is my paternal ggrandmother. She married Joseph Key and don't know much about him either. Family oral history suggests he might have been a Cherokee. Haven't been able to verify this though.

Martha Lane was my gr gr grandmother, younger sister of Mary Lane. Martha Lane Sheek and her brother Franklin are the aunt and uncle who traveled 50 miles on horseback to take the young Key children home to be raised as their own, as the story went.

I have noticed in my search some Key descendant have been in and around Kiowa and Washita county since early in 1900's. Martha Lane and J. Wes Sheek's daughter (Mary's niece), Lou Emma Sheek Duke, lived in Indian Territory/OK since about 1887 until her death at Roosevelt, Kiowa, OK, 14 Feb 1927; buried at Centerville Cemetery near Roosevelt, OK.

I'm interested in learning more about James and Mary Unknown Lane, also.
