My line of Cantzlers came from Germany. I don't know the city in Germany that they emigrated from, but their father had been
burgemeister of that city, had died and left all his estates to the Church (leaving his family completely out of the inheritance), so the four boys left Germany together, all changed their name from Kantzler to
Cantzler, and settled in
New York City. My great-grandfather, Martin
Cantzler, was born in
New York City. There was (in l918, when my mother visited it in NYC) a hotel near
Wall Street with the
Cantzler name on it. I suppose NYC tax records from that time might have it recorded. My grandfather had an
Uncle Henry (whom he was named for) and an
Uncle Frank and an
Uncle Carl. The family story was that Martin and Henry named their first sons for each other, so there should
be a Martin
Cantzler who would be Henry's son(back in the l890s) I guess that means that at least four of the second generation moved to
Wisconsin and became farmers. Other offspring from the
New York Cantzlers moved to
California, but I don't know where. My cousins went to Salt Lake City for an Air FOrce REunion a few years ago and the
Mormon records there had many Cantzlers
and
Rabe (Ida, grandmother Cantzler's maiden name) marriages and births, but none
seemed to coinside with dates I had. A death annoucement my dad has mentioned Zicher, Germany for one of Grandma (Ida
Rabe) Cantzler's brothers birthplace. I believe that is situated in a part of Germany which would have been
Prussia at the time and is now in eastern Germany.
