I have been unable to determine, with certainty, the parents of my g-grandmother, Martha
Belle Hiser Judy (b-10 Jul 1871 Pend Co; d-8 Oct 1953). 15 Aug 1888 she married
Abraham Seymour Judy (b-19 Jul 1867; d-2 Jan 1951). They had six children: Ella Grace (my grandmother; b-1889), Minnie
Estelle (b-1891), Bertha V (b-1894), Frederick A (b-1896), Lester Isaac (b-1899), Leila
Belle (b-1902), and Adam S (b-1905). In 1912 the family moved from
Landes to a farm near
McNeil,
Hardy County. Martha
Belle and
Abraham Judy are buried at the St. Luke’s Cemetery at Glebe,
Hampshire Co.
I have found in the 1880 census that Martha B
Hiser, age 9, was a domestic servant in the household of Jacob C Judy. (Jacob C Judy and her future husband,
Abraham S Judy, were first cousins, once removed.) In addition, the 1880 census shows a nearby household of a Jonathan
Hiser, age 50, and his second wife Mary J
Landes Hiser, age 25. Jonathan, widower, and Mary J were married Jan 1872 in Pend Co. Possibly, Jonathan was Martha’s father and she was able to walk to work at the Jacob Judy household. If true, then Jonathan’s first wife, Louisa
Payne, was Martha’s mother. However, I have been unable to find any records to verify this possibility.
