This is a question that has stumped us before too.

For more information you can check out this link http://www.gean-ealogy.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=... , but basically...

Your g-grandfather appears in the household of his parents Wm & Susan Warren in 1850 & 1860. I am 99.9% sure (after years of debate and moving back and forth) that William was David & Grisilla's child...not John & Ann Shaw's. I primarily concluded this based on census records, deed records, court records and studying other children of William & Susan Warren. It would definitely appear that William was the brother of the John that married Lucinda Hazelwood and was murdered in Lincoln Co., TN. Since, John and his brother Joseph were born in Indiana, and David is the only one that we know of for sure that moved to Indiana, I truly believe he has been placed with the right father. Some have said that John & Ann Shaw moved to IN also, but I have found no evidence of that, and there children's birth locations certainly don't indicate that. I believe that was thought because of the placement at some point of William & John to John & Ann Shaw.

John & Ann Shaw's son William Edmond was born about 1821, which is why there has been some confusion about whether he was the one born in 1819 or the one born in 1821. However, he died in 1854 and could not be the William that was married to Susan Warren, and therefore the father of your g-grandfather.

I should also note that from what I have seen, oral family history from descendants of the William Jean that married Callie Miles is that William was the son of David.

Please feel free to check out our website and let us know if you have any additions/corrections or questions!! It is kind of hard to explain in a post, but we are always willing to untangle all these fun Jeans!!
My Grandmother was Ozemba Fultz who married Mose Willis (sometimes known as Willis Mose)I have some info on the family but not much. I know they came south in the late 1800s from Wisconsin and were settled in Fultz Cove near McMinnville, Tn I do not know how she met my Grandfather who probably did not travel very far. Maybe you have a clue?

I am confused somewhat as to my ancestry. My ancestors were David Jean and John Jean who moved to Lincoln County Tennessee in the early 1800s. My grandfather is Mose Willis Jean sometimes Willis Mose. His father was Edmond Jean, His father was William Jean and William's father was either David or John. I wonder if there is any info for me to be sure which one is my ancestor. Both of them had Williams. David had William Wesley b1819 and John had William Edmond b 1828. Either one of them could have been the father of my great grandfather Edmond Jean who d in Lincoln County.

Edmund Jean of Stokes Co., NC

Some have discussed this before, but I want to try and take a stab at this again.

Edmund Jean of Stokes Co., NC was survived by Martha and 13 children, whose names and approximate ages in 1802 were: nine children by his first wife ; Wiley 25, Wesley 24, Elizabeth (Betsy) 21, William 19, Patty 17, Edmund Jean 16; Sally 14, Joseph 12, and David 08; and Martha's own children; John 6; Nancy 4, Harrison 3, and Jesse Lee 01. Since Wiley and Wesley were of legal age, Martha was left with ten children of minor age; six step children (ages 18 to 07) and four children of her own (ages 07 to 01).

Does anyone have a copy of this particular record? I haven't been able to locate it yet, and would really love to see it. If someone just knows what type of document it was (guardianship records, court records, probate records, deed record??). I am wondering if it is possible that it was hard to read and maybe William was 29 and not 19...or where they listed in the order above?

I would love to have a copy of this documenat and am willing to pay for a copy and postage, if anyone is willing to share. I am not trying to upset the balance of the Stokes Co., NC Jean tree, but we have already discovered a few branches that were crisscrossed and I just can't get it out of my mind that William Jean of Greene Co., TN is the correct son of Edmund.

I realize it doesn't mean anything, but the only thing I have ever found on the Rev. William Jean born abt 1784 and died 1825 in Granville is:

From "Death & Marriage Notices from the Hillsborough Recorder, 1820-1879 and the Hillsboro Recorder 1887-1888" compiled by Shirley Jones Mallard, page 34 - 6 Apr 1825 - Rev. William Jean died 9th March last, in Granville Co. He was a preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church, circuit preacher and presiding elder throughout NC & VA - Vol. VI, #268

The last record I have found for William in Stokes Co., NC was about 1816 - that is an eight year gap until the Rev. shows up in 1825. And one other thought/question that is bothering me "presiding elder" - wasn't he a bit young to be that? I would think the 1825 Granville Co., NC Rev. William Jean was a little older than 39...prob at least 45 - 50?

Has anyone else ever looked in to this?

Please feel free to check out or website at www.gean-ealogy.com - if you have any questions/corrections/additions please e-mail me at memmathis@gean-ealogy.com

Mel Harman

Does anyone know where that came from? Does anyone have any children for him? Is there anyone researching him?
My great grandmother's older brother, Thaddeus Forrest mentions "my cousins, Annie [A.] Nicholson, Mollie Nicholson, Ella D. Nicholson Marriett, widow of Milton M. Marriott, Alimira B. Nicholson Croga[u], widow of Dr. Crogru and their two daughters, Annie Lucile Crogau and Margaret L. Crogau in his will 23 Aug 1916. He died in Baltimore 1917. These are definitely relatives on his mother, Mary Ann Jean Forrest's side. Do any of these ring a bell?

Some Southern Jean family descended from the Cornwall England Jane family

Recent dna testing reveals that some of the Jean/Jane family from TN, SC, NC and KY are descended from the same ancestor as the Jane family of St Cleer, Cornwall.

Those matching this family from Cornwall are descended from:

1)Wiley Jean, of Bedford County, TN (born NC)

2)James Thomas Gean (originally from Lincoln County, TN but moved to Wayne County)

3)Philip Geane/Jean of Chatham County, NC

4)Burrell Jane/Jean of Bute County NC - then to South Carolina

5) Unk Jean of Montgomery/Floyd County, KY.

The family from St. Cleer didn't immigrate to the US until the 1860's. Our common ancestor would be much earlier, as we can document all of the above men for a long time before that. We know Burrell, and Sherod were in Bute County, NC before and during the Revolution and Philip was in Chatham by 1772.
I have not been able to determine who the Joseph Jean was that married Catherine McClure...but there are several Jean men in Lincoln Co., TN who are "unlinked".

Wyatt & Margaret Tilson Jean's son married a Mary, and he can be found in Greene Co., TN on the 1850-1880 census' - I haven't been able to locate him in 1900 yet, but he died in 1901 and apparently used the spelling Janes.

I feel sure that the Joseph that married Catherine was a sibling of the Wiley Jean that married Rosannah Webb, but have not been able to place either of them with a parent.

The Joseph that married Martha Pamplin is surely the son of David & Grisella White Jean.

Looking for VA, NC, & TN Jean family researchers.

On our website www.gean-ealogy.com we have been collecting information on as many "Jean" families as we can.

Right now I am specifically looking for researchers of the Rev. William Jean Sr. of Guilford & Stokes Counties in NC and Brunswick Co., VA Family. Descendants of this family have spelled the surname Jean, Jeanes, Jeans, Jane, Jayne, Jaynes and possibly Gean.

I recently received a stack of deed and court records from a fellow researcher in Lincoln Co., TN, (I am in the process of ordering more), and am now looking for someone who is willing to exchange information and ideas.

I am not trying to upset the balance of the Jean tree, but there are known errors in the published Jean trees, and I believe there are some errors on the tree of some of William's descendants. If you are interested in, or are, researching one of these lines, we would love to have your input!

Please join our Forum area at:
http://www.gean-ealogy.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=...

I am researching the JEAN family of Baltimore also. My direct line is George JEAN m. Sarah BOWEN of Baltimore County, MD 31 Oct 1811, whose daughter Mary Ann JEAN was my great-great grandmother.
I have a reference about Eleanor D. JEAN m. Thomas NICHOLSON 22 May 1845 from several sources, although I do not how she ties in to George.
I also have saved info from the Mt. Olive Cemetery that has a David JEAN b. 16 Nov 1805, d. 01 Sept 1880. It has a list of other Jean’s who are buried with him if this would be any help. It is probably that David JEAN that is listed in the 1870 Baltimore Co Census.
If I can be of further help, please let me know.
Danette Machen

I am researching for Jean connections in Baltimore, MD and Maryland in general. I believe that there were 2 surviving daughters both married circa 1845 Baltimore and father may be David Jean who would have died 1830-1839 range. Does this group strike a chord with anyone? Am also looking for parents for Thomas Nicholson as his ancestry is in dispute and may lead back to Commodore Nicholson of the American Revolution.

Re: William Jean/Jeans b. 1774

Bob - I am not sure I can help you - but we have been wondering about this ourselves.

The information I have shows that:

Edmund Jean was survived by Martha and 13 children, whose names and approximate ages in 1802 were: nine children by his first wife ; Wiley 25, Wesley 24, Elizabeth (Betsy) 21, William 19, Patty 17, Edmund Jean 16; Sally 14, Joseph 12, and David 08; and Martha's own children; John 6; Nancy 4, Harrison 3, and Jesse Lee 01. Since Wiley and Wesley were of legal age, Martha was left with ten children of minor age; six step children (ages 18 to 07) and four children of her own (ages 07 to 01).

Does anyone have a copy of this particular record? Is it possible that it was hard to read and maybe William was 29 and not 19...or where they listed in the order above?
I would love to have a copy of Edmund's estate records, and am willing to pay for a copy and postage, if anyone is willing. I too am not trying to upset the balance of the Jean tree, but we have already discovered a few branches that were criss-crossed and I just can't get it out of my mind that William Jean of Greene Co., TN was related to Wiley Jean of Greene Co., TN - I just can't place him anywhere in the family (not even as a cousin, unless there was another child of Rev. William Jean Sr. we don't have...both men arrived about the same time in Greene.

Mel Harman
William Jean/Jeans b. 1774

Since it's bee two year since my las posting, I'm trying again!

I'm searching for the parents of William JEAN(s) b. btw 20 July and 4 Oct 1774 in NC. William is my 4great grandfather through his daughter Nancy JEANS b. abt 1810 NC who married Jacob BOLES in Greene Co TN. This is the information I have on my William who migrated to Greene Co TN about the same time, after 1810, as Wiley JEAN(s) son of Edmund JEAN and his first wife.

Martha JEAN in the 1810 Stokes County Census is living one household from my William JEAN. I suspect this Martha is the widow of Edmund JEAN.

In William's household in the 1810 Stokes County Census he had a 45+ male and female which could be his wife's parents, but I have not found his wife Mary's maiden name anywhere much less her parents. Of course I haven't found anything definitive on William's parents either other than by supposition.

In the 1830 census in Greene Co TN, a female 60-70 years old living in William's household which could be Martha, William's step-mother. The problem is William's age does not fit the 1783/84 generally accepted date of Edmund JEAN's son William's birth. That's what keeps throwing me. My William JEAN(s) consistently appears in the census records ten years older than the 1784 date.

In the 1850 Greene Co. TN Census William is listed as 76 years old. In the 1860 census he's 85 which would be consistent. His household for the census was polled on 4 Oct 1850 and on 20 July 1860, placing his birth date between July and Oct of 1774, making him the eldest son of Edmund JEAN and his first wife - if in fact Edmund is his father, and if so probably the son who traditionally would bear the responsibility of caring for his elderly stepmother. Of course that's purely supposition regarding his responsibility and his parentage.

Also there is a woman 16 years William's junior living in his household in Stokes Co NC and in Greene Co. TN. Although in the 1830 census the female is placed in the 15-20 column rather than the 20-30 column which was probably an oversight on the census taker's part or he misjudged her age. William's daughter Nancy JEANS b. abt 1810 was married in January of 1830. She is my 3great grandmother and is in Jacob BOLES' household in the 1830 Greene Co. TN census.

In 1850 his wife Mary is 16 years younger than William Jeans than she is in the 1860 census.

Any chance that Edmund's son Wiliam might have been born in 1774 instead of 1784? And, yes, I have seen that Edmund's William supposedly died abt 1823/24. Did this William die or vanish from Stokes Co to appear in Greene Co TN? Does a Bible record or tombstone attest to his death? I am not, repeat NOT, contesting anyone's research only searching for possibilities or facts to substantiate or refute my suppositions.

My William is just too consistent on his age to have made himself 10 years older on purpose. He lists his place of birth as NC which is consistent with the children of Edmund and his first wife's children.

Everything I find seems to point to Edmund as his father or to Wiley as either an elder brother or a relative of some sort.I can find no other JEAN(s) family in Stokes Co. or in NC to whom my William could belong.

I believe William had a son Carter who appears in the Bright Hope Furnace comany store ledger. Carter is married at the time and occasionally he makes purchases on William's account. William was a collier by trade.

Any opinions, rebuffs, or preferably facts would be appreciated that would turn speculation into reality, or that provide circumstantial evidence to disprove or support my suppositions.

Any information on William's marriage or Mary who would have been born abt 1790 in NC would also be appreciated.

My direct email is rwallace15@comcast.net.

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Bob Wallace

Hello, I am researching the Kilpatricks and I was wondering if you have any info on "Mattie" Kilpatrick's parents. My g-grandma, Lula Belle Kilpatrick is a sister to your g-g-grandma, Mattie. I would appreciate any info you have on their parents. Thanks

William Edmund Jean

I am looking for someone who can clear up the confustion I've found regarding William Edmund Jean b. anywhere from 1819, 1820 or 1821. This Wm Jean married Susan Warren, Callie Miles, and Betsy Tucker. The confusion rests with the parents. I have seen him recorded as the son of John Jean and Ann Shaw, and David Jean and Grisella White. Thanks in advance.

Should looked at this board a long time ago.

You just broke a small brick wall for me. My spouse is descended from Francois Regis Jean & Marie Josphte Gauvin, through their son Michel Jean.

I have only been able to go back to Pierre Jean & Marie Josphte Mignier. You've taken me back another 3 generations - thank you.

Robynne
