Isaacks in Texas

Samuel Isaacks and his father Elijah Isaacks are both listed in the Texas Handbook Online which is sponsored by the Texas Historical Association and The University of Texas. Elijah was married to Ester Donoho. Samuel married first Nancy Allen and second Martha "Patsy" Richardson. Samuel is considered the first Jewish settler in Texas (even though they had to swear allegiance to the Catholic Church in order to live in Texas and own land.)Samuel was unmarried at the time. However, two unmarried males were allowed to constitute a family for the purpose of fulfilling the Austin 300 family contract. You can read about the Isaacks online in the handbook. Elijah was a delegate to the Convention of 1832. He was the son of Samuel and Mary Wallace Isaacks and was born in South Carolina in Feb. 22, 1775. Elijah was in Texas illegally until 1830 when he became part of the Bevil Settlement.
Europeans roots and even surnames have little bearing on their Jewish heritage, since people of the Jewish faith lived in every European Country and often took local surnames.
However, Samuel's second wife, was not of the Jewish faith. I do not know about Nancy Allen.

Does the hanbook state they were of Jewish faith? None of them were. Samuel(1) was born in Scotland approx 1665. If this is stated please give me the URL for this handbook It is definitely not correct. Samuel was not Welsh either. Samuel(2) came to Texas not Elijah. Samuel greeted the original 300 at the Sabine River. If You do not agree please find Rodney Allen on the Message board and send him the same info. Elijah and Hester came with the old 300.

If noone has given you the site address to the handbook, here it is: http://www.tsha.ustexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/II...
and it definitely states that Samuel was PERHAPS the earliest Jewish settler in Texas. And Samuel is the ONLY Isaacks that I found listed among The Old Three Hundred. I have a copy of the typed transcription of the book and I have attached it to this post. It is the Brazos River that he met Stephen F. Austin and it's near the Brazos River that he was granted the land, just over 4400 acres of land. I'm not saying Elijah and Esther were not of the Old Three Hundred, I just did not find their names on that list and I could have possibly missed their names.

Samuel makes the list for the Old 330. Hester and Elijah settled in Bevil. If you know them to be with the Old 300, I would love this information. The Handbook does not state they are Jewish, but other sources do so. I just downloaded a long article from Tennesse by a descendant stating such. We descend from Elijah and Hester through daughter Matilda. Do you know her exact birthdate; several are offered on ancestry. Also does the family have a record of her marriage to John Schrier

There's no proof that Samuel was Jewish. It's all speculation because of the spelling of the name using the "k". He probably was not Jewish. Not that it really matters to me but there is no historical records at all giving any proof. There was a book that was written about the history of Jewish people in America and Samuel was listed, mostly I believe because a kinship was assumed with Abraham Isaacks who emigrated to New York. Abraham was in fact Jewish. No kinship has ever been established with Samuel though, who's ancestor Samuel emigrated to Virginia. That Samuel, the emigrant, is thought to have come from Scotland originally, by way of Wales to America.

Try http://www.findagrave.com

Search for Isaacks.

Nothing on Matilda Isaacks Schrier but her daughter, Dicy Schrier Mitchell on that site.

Also, see my website:

for more information on the Isaacks family.

Hope this helps`
