Hi! My name is as above. My great-grandfather was Daniel Hodgins, born in New Hampshire. Both his parents are listed in the 1900 census for Carbondale, PA as having been born in Ireland. Unfortunately, they did not have room on the form for the county. Daniel was a Saloon Keeper and had 7 children. His eldist was my grandmother Jane. I am trying to find out the names of his parents as well as his wife, who apparently was deceased by 1900. Daniel was born on Jan. 1843 in New Hampshire and came to Carbondale to marry. His children were Jane, Ann, Belle, Bridget, Barbra, Thomas, and James. Unfortunately, that is all the info I have of his past.

Much has been researched and written of Hodgins who came to Ontario, Canada. My ancestors came from Tipperary and Limerick around 1820 - in fact a whole shipload of Hodgins came at that time - it gets very confusing as Hodgins married Hodgins. Their ancestors before had come from Gloustershire, England the time of the English civil war (around 1640)- 2 brothers - James and Thomas - served with Cromwell (a nasty man)and after fighting in Ireland they stayed there. After 180 years the family as you can imagine spread out 'somewhat'! Many of the Hodgins just in my branch went to Michigan and others. If you think there is a chance you are connected to a Ontario branch I can give you an address which has much info.

My greatgrandfather John Thomas Hodgins was born in Canada about 1845 (according to the 1885 Dakota Territory Census). His father was Joseph Hodgins, born in Ireland. Joseph was married to Hannah Croft, who was born in England. Two of John Thomas's sons were born in Michigan, John Joseph and James Garfield Hodgins. I would like the address you mentioned in your message board. Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks, Marlene

In your message you spoke of an address for more info on Hodgins coming out of the Ontario area. We are pretty sure we come from the Tullamore-Hodgins line from around Clandeboye or Lucan (more specifically Tullamore George). Any info would help in sorting out the 'George' Hodgins lines.

Get a book called "Irish Migration to Canada" (I think). It's a marvelous story of murder and reprisal that started the Hodgins migration to Canada. They had to. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll get you exact details.

Now for everyone else: does anyone know about an English branch in Durham County, Darlington? There's a Jonh Hodgins who was born in Ontario about 1841. His father was born in England about 1811.
