Yorkshire Hirds

Mike Hird  (View posts) Posted: 15 Jul 2001 5:59PM GMT
Surnames: Hird, Sexton, Angus, Gage, Lyles, Bruce, Waterworth, Squires, Copping, Labourn, Sheen, Senior, Scaife
I have now established the Family tree details as researched by my Father

I am one of three children of Stanley Hird (b. 19/02/32) who had a single brother Jack (b. 10/03/25 d.08/01/95) both beimg residents of Dewsbury West Yorks
Their Father, my Grandfather, was George Willie Hird (b. 17/04/1901. d. 08/01/1992) who was married to Edith Ann Lyles (b. 23/07/1902 d. 04/11/19722).
George Willie had two siblings namely Gerry Hird who married Ida, and Florrie Hird who married firstly a James Senior and then a William Scaife.
George Willie's Father, my Great Grandfather was one Fred Hird (b. 06/02 1870 d. 04/03/1959) of Low Well, Shipley near Bradford West Yorks who married Eliza Ann Thompson.
Fred was one of 9 siblings (possibly more when infant deaths are taken into account) and these were :-
Charlotte b. 16/01/1868 at Briggate, Shipley, married to Joseph Labourn 29/11/1890
Emily who married one Edward Copping
Matilda Sarah b. 19/02/1872 at 55 Briggate, Shipley
Robert who married Jane Squires
Joseph (b. 25/03/1886) who married Elizabeth Waterworth 26/03/1910
William (b. 19/01/1890) who married Nellie Sheen 26/12/1916
Angus (b. 06/06/1880 d. 22/02/1890)
Elizabeth who married avisiting Australian during the Great War by the name of Willie Bruce who later died in Adelaide
(her Father was so offended that he wrote her out of his Will)
All nine were the product of William & Sarah Jane Hird, my Great, Great Grandparents
William was one of two identified children his sister being Elizabeth b. 03/08/1840 in Elland, West Yorks
William b. 12/05/1842 at Ovenden, West Yorks died 08/08/1917 at Hanging Heaton, Dewsbury where my Grandfather lived and my Father does now. He married Sarah Jane Angus a Scot resident in the Bradford area. She was born 1847 and died 10/08/1906. Apparently William remarried to a Mary sometime later.
William and Elizabeth were the offspring of one William Hird of Skircoat, Halifax and Matilda Sexton of Elland who married at Halifax Parish Church on 08/06/1840.
This is where the trail grows cold.
There were two weddings that day at the church, one involving a Wood and Williams to Matilda.
The wedding certificate shows William's Father as a John Wood; should this have been John Hird or did the author get it completely wrong.
If it were a John Hird, there was a John Hird who married a Hannah Gage at Fewston on 01/08/1813 - they had a son, William Hird b. 01/09/1820 in Bingley.
There is a John Hird born in Bingley 28/08/1791
There are however three other John Hirds whose marriages were as follows :-
John & Hannah married 13/10/1801 at Masham , North Yorks
John & Mary married 07/05/1809
John and Molly married 24/06/1813 in Haworth, West Yorks

So the big question that my Father was unable to answer is... was the William Hird, son of John Hird and Hannah Gage, the same William Hird that married Matilda in 1840.
If so and it is the same John that was born in 1791, the trail could be picked up further ( although I'm not sure how)
Does anyone out there know any of these ?

Mike: I sincerely hope that you are right about the Hird- Wood mixup. My wife is the Hird. Her Father came from Bradford in 1915, to California. His father was Samuel Hird of Bradford. Ran a butcher shop. Other members of his family were in the wool trades. The family had close ties to Bingley, and some of them are buried in the Churchyard there. I thank you for filling in my files on Hanna Gage's sirname. I only had a given name. I have data back to the Battle of Waterloo--compliments of Edward Hird of Florida, a descendant of Samuel's brother. None of this may be of interest to you, but you are welcome.

MIKE: H. EDWARD HIRD at-- "ehird@aug.com"-- he is from New Jersey originally. I haven't been in contact for a few months, but his Chrisatmas card didn't come back, so I assume the address is still active.

I have just started doing my family tree. From the little I know, My greatgrandfather was George Joseph Hird from Yorkshire. Also I have heard that 10 brothers in the 1800's went to America and 8 of them stayed and 2 went back to England. Do you think any of your descendants may be my decendants?

Hi,

I'm descended from one of the brothers that returned to England. I have a fairly comprehensive set of info on the whole bunch though. Let me know if I can help.
