Jerome Hard or his sister's family Kenneth Canfield - Ohio

Mrs. Canfield (Betty)of Medina, Ohio once worked with the Hards responsible for the restoration of the "ABRAHAM HARD LOG CABIN" and seemed to be involved in Hard family reunions in Ohio. In 1980 she told me that her brother JEROME HARD was a painter living in Paris. I bought a pastel by him, but did not get to know him personally. I have read a notice that he died in 1990. I would very much like to communicate with anyone of this family, as I am still working on a Hard family genealogy. Thanks to anyone who might have information to share.

Re: family tree

My father (Gary B. Hard, b. 1901 near Mansfield, Texas) came to California probably in 1936 as a single man (after working in the Detroit area for about 15? yrs.)& went to work for American Aircraft, etc. I was born in 1939 in Santa Monica, Calif. (no brothers). We could very well be related, but my father never metioned "other Hards" in Calif. except Darlene Hard (b. 1935-36 in Calif.) a well-known (in the '50s)tennis champion about whom I would like to know more. I have done considerable research on the Texan line, but have seen none around Galveston. I have a feeling there may be an African-American relation somewhere because of some of the "earlier" members of the family who probably had slaves in the 18th C. in Connecticut or other slave states. Also my G-G Grandfather John Joseph Hard (b. 1935 in New Jersey, to Texas around 1855) was in the Galveston area during the Civil War, Confederate Army as an "Overseer". Following this possibility, with clues I do not have, would be of interest to me. In any case, I would be pleased to help you if we can find a connection. Do you know where your father was born and the names & birthplaces of his parents? Most of the Hards in my "tree" from 1835 on are pretty simple people - there were lots of poor farmers in Texas. Those who stayed "back East" were more wealthy & probably disregarded the "Texans". Regards, Barbara Hard Allemand

My grandmother, Georgia Mae Hard, was Alonzo's granddaughter. My grandma's dad was W. A. (Wallace Albert) Hard. I'm a little confused, because I'm pretty sure that W. A. Hard only had five children, four boys and one girl. The girl was my grandma, Georgia Mae, and she only had one son, my dad, and I only have one sibling, a sister. Please respond.

A long-shot, replying to a message posted nine years ago. I'm looking for relatives or information on Elsie Hard, born August 1876, daughter of Thomas C. Hard, siblings were Bertie, Bessie, and Rhea. They lived in Wadsworth, Ohio about 1900. Elsie married my great-grandfather Edward Walker Osburn, who was a Methodist minister in that town. She was his second wife, his first wife (my great-grandmother) having died in 1899. Elsie was living in Florida with Edward in 1930; Edward died in 1931, and I have no further information on Elsie. Elsie and Edward had two children: Herbert C. Osburn and Ruth M. Osburn. I'm hoping to find out what happened to her.

Re: Hard Times Family Newsletter

A descendant of John Joseph Hard of Sringfield/Mansfield, Tex., I began work on the Hard genealogy in the 1970's but dropped off until recently (2004). I have lots of information going back to Connecticut ca. 1650. I am in the process of verifying information & sources I received from other family members in the '70s. I am satisfied with my information up to the existence of Melville Thomas Hard (b. 10 Aug. 1808) , m. to Abigail Ward, but things get "fuzzy" about the tie with Eli Hard and Laura Thomas (said to be parents of Melville Thomas Hard). Many first names are carried through to my father Gary Baldwin Hard, b. 1901 in Denton County, Texas, d. 1970 in California. I am now 69, still living in France since 1967, so hope to "correct" what I have to be able to pass it on to other family members for future research. I am particularly interested in Melville Thomas Hard's will (he died 30 June 1878) probated 24 Nov. 1894 in Newark NJ w/ref. 8, p. 531, Bond 12, p. 484. Do you know of a copy? I would also like to know more about the Hard Newsletter. Thanks for your comments. Barbara Hard Allemand

So many years since this question was asked, but it couldn't hurt to answer:
I was told by my father and his father that the name Hard was actually a nickname that stuck after landing on the American shore; that his true name was William McKinlay, a man who found his way unto a pirate ship as an angry pirate himself. "William the Hard" they called the Scot since his anger was fierce as his left hook - one that would strike just before his blade.
Pirates and ships seems to be the only commonality we have with our stories I guess, sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

I have heard of a story involving a pirate ship and someone with the last name hardcastle and they shortened it to hard so that they could escape. My grandfather whose name is Don Hard was born in Missouri and he married Evelyn Emr

Dave: Did you have a Y DNA test done by Sorensen Labs.?
I recently posted on there and came up with a match of 35 of 36 markers with a decendent of William Henry Hard. My Haloptype is E3b Please get in contact with me. jerherd@hotmail.com

My name is Jerry Herd, the fartherest back I can go in the Herd line is my great grandfather James Lacy Herd of Tennessee born 1848 who moved to Texas about 1870. I wonder if there have been some name permutations.

Hi,
I believe the origin of the name 'Hardcastle' comes from an area in North Yorkshire, on the moors between Bewerley and Pateley Bridge. According to Dr. George Redmonds the name means a bleak place or cheerless dwelling and that every Hardcastle originate from this area.

Does this help.
Alan Hardcastle

I am particularly interested in Hards in London in the 1600's. Do you have any information about Hards during the plague
probably 1655 to 1665?
Thanks,

Patty
