Searching for the name Hard and origin of name.

Deborah  (View posts) Posted: 23 Jan 2000 11:41AM GMT
I am wondering if any of you are having the same problem I am?
When searching different geneology search areas, and I enter in Hard
I can get back items like: "they had hard times..." or "The ground was hard".
It doesn't seem to matter if I capitalize Hard or not.
Any one have any helps?

Also, is there any specific origin of the name HARD? Irish? English? Or have any
of you found it is the shortened version of another name such as HARDIN, HARDCASTLE, etc?
Glad you are all here.
Sincerely, Deb

Deborah, I am so glad someone else is trying to find the origin of the Hard name. I have thought it is a shortened version of something else, too. I wondered what country the Hards came from, too. No idea here. Maybe we can get help soon. Rita

I have been told it was given to the family in the 12th century by the Invading Normans who defeated England. They needed to keep track of the new found slaves.Last names helped to keep track.

Yes, I know that the Hard's came from England. The original name was Hardcastle. The name was given to a them because of their hard work in the English castle. Acording to what I heard, they worked for the castle in hopes of gaining access to the new found land at that time, which was North America. When the name arrived on America, it got shortened to Hard.
