Re: GUERRERO INFO.

As the Spanish colonization of the Americas progressed there were several Guerrero lineages that made the trip across the ocean. It then comes to reason that in Old Spain, there were already many Guerrero lineages.

There is no agreement as to what "type" of name Guerrero was. Was it an "occupational" name such as Miller, Baker, or Smith or was it an "attribute" name, such as Little, Strong, or Brown? Perhaps the answer is both, and therefore, from the very beginning the surname had several origins from several individuals.

What is certain was that it was borne by some knights, and therefore to some noble lineages. Among the orders of knights such as that of Santiago, the Guerreros were involved. To qualify, a knight had to prove that he was of ancient Christian noble lineage on both his father's and mother's side. As for attestation, the earliest Guerrero I've so far come across was a knight named Juan Guerrero de Soto, who was awarded membership to a Spanish king's Order of the Band, in about 1333.

Most descriptions as to the specific origins of the name in Spain, that I've come across almost invariably mention virtually all regions of medievel Spain. It is not instrucive when "Castile", "Leon", "Aragon", and "Andalucia" are mentioned in the same paragraph especially without a chronological context, much less when one source contradicts another source. One gains the sense that it originated in all these places more or less simultaneously, at the worst, or that it had already spread far and wide before it was finally recorded, at best.

In terms of frequency and distribution of the name in modern Spain, maps on these sites can be instructive.

http://apellido.enfemenino.com/w/apellidos/apellido-guerrero...

http://www.miparentela.com/mapas/detalles/guerrero.html

Re: GUERRERO INFO.

I too have looked for info on our great name and have found several roots to it. I consulted my family and most seem to believe we come from spain. This seems logical as the queen would need protectors and an army of which guerrero's or warriors would be necessary. Most websites seem to point to Spain as our "home land" and our family crest varries as I believe there were many "warriors" or Guerreros the queen had. I have come to know that my ancestors were a family by the surname "Westtroop" or "Westroop" family and that even seems interesting as it seems to indicate a correlation to military life or a military history. One family member in particular has a family tree that puts us in Jewish ancestry and that also carries some need for warriors as Jews needed an army of their own.
I don't think that we are talking about the same Guerrero's. The other Guerrero's that I spoke to lived by the High School. When I was manager of Sonic in Palacios I worked the these other Guerrero's. My niece dated one of the boys since they said that they were not related to us. I do believe that they are our cousins I just cannot prove it. I have been trying to research because I want to know if they are related to us.

If you don't mind me asking, who are your parents? I don't reconize your name.

Irene

My family is the Guerrero's in Palacios Texas. Are you referring to the land in Mexico? After talking with several older family members we found that the orange orchard that was owned in Mexico was taken over by someone outside of the family. When our great great grandfather passed the land was taken over. One of our family members went there to try and find out what happened with the land and there were guards at the gates that would not let him in. He was not able to get any more information.

My name is Irene Guerrero Carpenter, the daughter of Ramon Guerrero Sr. I have also been researching my family's history. Ataufo Guerrero was my grandfather. I have found out that there are other Guerrero's living in Palacios Texas that know about that land labled Guerrero INC. I spoke to someone who became upset when I mentioned the situation to her. She stated that when some leaves the land and some else takes over it is now theirs. I spoke to a Jose Guerrero that told me that his dad's first cousin had the ranch and he was an engineer. When my dad was alive he also told the that his first cousin had the ranch and was an engineer. So, from that I am come to the conclusion that the other Guerrero's in Palacios are related to us but since they have the ranch they do not want us to figure this out.

Irene Guerrero Carpenter
