I'm just leaving the house but will check later. I have tons of information from Robert Goulet, a Canadian who has done extensive work on the various Goulet lines.

Lorraine was apparently named after Lorraine Aubert (is that spelled right?), a sister of Henry and Josephine. Also, my aunt Lora Alpert(Lorraine) was Josephine's daughter, my dad's sister, my godmother. Josephine, my grandmother, married William Salzmann; 3 children: Stanley (my dad), Lorraine and William. She then married Lee Crutcher. All 3 children took his name.

One of the other sisters, Genevieve, is another that I've had trouble searching. I remember meeting her, believe she had a son (I think we visited her son in Mesa, Arizona back in the '50's. Do you know anything about them?

Yes, that's us. My mother is Lorraine under the name of Goulet, and my aunt is Rosemond under the name of Walker or Turner, she still lives in LA. Meanwhile. I've managed to trace the Goulet line back to Louis Joseph Goulet b. 1797 in Montreal m. to Clarette La Fleur. The Gervais line ( your gr. grandmother, my gggm) goes all the way back to Rennes in the 17th century.
Do you have any info. on the Goulet line before 1797?
Best, Donna Maria

Same line. Your grandfather and my grandmother, Josephine were brother and sister.
As a young child I remember your grandparents, living in LA, as were my grandparents. Henry and Rose had a pool (a very big deal to an 8 year old from Illinois) and it was the first time I had pineapple sherbet (still a favorite). This was in 1950. My father took my brother and I out to visit his parents (my mother had died the previous year).
I remember Henry was a theatrical agent; however, I was looking for a Henry Goulet, not Walker. I didn't realize he had changed his name. I remember they had 2 daughters, saw photos, but never met them. They were older and probably not living at home.
Do I have the right people?
My grandfather was Henry Goulet, born in Detroit and moved to St, Louis. He changed his name to Walker. As a young man he was a comedian and a tap dancer in vaudeville--working with another performer under the names of La Perle and Walker. He later became a theater producer and an agent. He married Rose D'Alba, my grandmother. They had two daughters, my mother Lorraine and my aunt, Rosamond.

Hi

I can't really recommend anything, since all of my knowledge comes from working online. All I can suggest is that you familiarise (and I do mean "really" familiarise) yourself with all the various forms of information available. Also, don't be afraid to ask folks for translations of pages in, for example, French.

You will find, as I have, that the same type of information (e.g. French Canadian Catholic church records) is presented in many different forms, some in latin, some in french, some in english, some in combinations.

Another useful point is that the spelling of names often depends on the primary language of the person completing the form, hence I have found a county death record for Mary King, when the person I was (initially) searching for was actually Marie Roi...

Sometimes you just get lucky - e.g. when you look at a search result, check out the pages either side for possible additional information. If you get stumped (and this is where the catholic church records are useful) try searching the god-parents names (as many will have been close relatives).

In the end, you may well develop a feel for the style of the records, at various periods in time, and will start to know where you are more likely to find a missing piece of information.

Above all, when you get stuck, ask.

good Luck.

What was common in French Canadian catholic families was that male children were very frequently named Joseph first, then whatever name they would be known by, whilst the female children were named Marie first, the whatever name they were to be know by...

Often the first born, male or female, would be known as Joseph or Marie, while those born later would not.

Very confusing when you also have cousins in the same locality, of the same generation and, therefore, of similar ages.

HTH

Thank you so much! Too many names here, as I mentioned, the only document I have found so far is for the marriage, which had her listed as Emily, and her mother as Annie.

I recently found out that my father-in-law's name was Joseph, not Thomas. His parents passed before I met him. He grew up all his life thinking it was Thomas.

And, thank you for a little education in geneaology; I am rather new at this!

After all this time you may not still be seeking information on the children of Francois Goulet and Therese Lemay so I will not go into any great detail unless I receive a response. According to what I have found Francois Antoine Goulet and Marie Therese Lemay dit Delorme had at least five children: Marie Marguerite (born 1783 in Laval), Marie Genevieve (born 1786 in Sault au Recollet), Marie Angelique(born 1788 in Terrebonne), Pierre (born 1789 in Laval) and Francois Xavier (born 1791 in Laval). I have a marriage of Marie Marguerite Goulet to Etienne Larrivee (1800 in Montreal) and of Francois Xavier to Josephte Desnoyers or Desnoyer (1815 in Montreal). I have records of children in both marriages. The Marie who married Jos. Migneron/Miron (Montreal 1808) could be either Marie Genevieve or Marie Angelique. I am going to investigate the 1808 marriage further.

There are other Goulets in the church records, whose parents are Pierre Goulet and Mathilde Peloquin). I found the family in the 1880 Census in Fall River under the name of Goum. All the children and parents match up to the Fall River Marriages. The family is from Sorel, PQ.

Cedulie's mother might be Adele Lessard, but I'm not 100% positive at this point.

David
Thanks for the response. Yes, that information does help. Pierre Joseph descends from that line. I had known that they had lived in Fall River and had been married there at a church that still exists, but I believe was rebuilt after being damaged by fire. Is there any information about Pierre Goulet's father during the Civil War.? That is something I've always wondered about this side of my family. I also wonder what this family did after Britain took over Canada after the French and Indian war, but this information is probably lost. I had been examining the line starting with Thomas Goulet on One World Tree, and was also wondering if that information is accurate. Thanks again.
Tim
I believe his father's name was Pierre Joseph as well. I have seen that the Goulet family is very well researched and traces its origin back to Thomas Goulet b. 1590. I blieve that Pierre Joseph is of this line, but I only have bits and pieces of information to connect them. I have Pierre's 1910 census from Woonsocket, RI, but don't have any documents that predate that. Thank you for any assistance.

1911 Census of Canada lists Horace and Amanda with their children Helene 18, Edouard 16, Theora 15, Eva 13, and Leo 8.

1901 Census of Canada lists Horace and Amanda with thier children Joseph 19, Alberta 17, Marianne 14, Marie Louise 11, Zeferina 10, Helene 8, Edouard 7, Dora 5, Eva 3.

The 1920 US census lists a possible Amanda Goulet as a widow living with her neice and nephew Eva Jalbert and Vincent Jalbert. I'm not sure this is the same Amanda, but the town and the age are appropriate.

The 1911 Census of Canada lists Zepherina as Seferina Benville, living with her husband Alfred Benville and their sons Carina 3 and Semanne 4 1/2. Benville is a misspelling of Bonneville. A nearby census page lists Georgianna Banville age 51 as mother-in-law living with Angelina Trudeau 22 and her husband Avilla Trudeau 28.

At some point in the last 5 years I received information that Horace is the son of Jean Baptiste Goulet born 1/15/1810-11 and Francoise Beauchamp who I have no information on but saw on one of the message boards a JB who married a Catherine am wondering if it may be Catherine Francoise or vice versa. I have JB's father as Benjamin Goulet 7/22/1781 married to Louise Provost. Unfortunately I did not write down a source at that time and the only info I can find on a Benjamin is one that died at the age of one year. I have Benjamin's parents as Dominique Goulet 2/13/1744-5 and Marie Amabel Pelletier, from this point I can go backwards all the way to Thomas.

If anyone can offer me information that documents from Horace back to Dominique and/or the correct parentage it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to ancestry.com for the free three days of census searches. Without it I would still be lost in the dark as to Zepherina's family.
