Jane, My ggg grandfather was Joshua Gilbert, born abt. 1794 in NC. I have not been able to connect further than him. He married Margaret Purcell in Daviess County, IN in Mar. 1818 and bought property in Knox County, IN in 1836. I have no info on him earlier than 1818. Think his father may have been Josiah or possibly Joshua or maybe a Thomas. Really don't know. You mentioned having all Gilberts mentioned in the 1790 census in NC. Do any of these names ring a bell?
