Alex Gast married Blanche Schuchmann, lived in the St. Louis area, my father was named after Paulus Gast. Paulus Gast was the founder of Gast Brewery in North St. Louis. Blanche was my father's great aunt. Any information on the Gast family or the Schuchmann family is greatly appreciated.
My father was born in 1922.

Hi...I came across your site while looking at Schuchmann names. While I was at Columbia University (1957-60) I did a family tree search and came up with alot of my family going back to early 1800;s. Most came from Germany and landed in New York City. Some spelled Schuchman others Schuchmann but all were family. I think I was the only Schuchmann in the NYC phone book but I have found many hundreds by using my computer and I keep in touch with a few. I'm now almost 70 and live in Florida a good place for us old folks. I would enjoy hearing from you if you have the time.

Paul Gast was the oldest son of Leopold and Bertha (Volckmann) Gast who came with family to the US in 1848. Leopold wrote a two volume autobiography that has been translated by family in California. In it are letters Paul wrote to his father when Paul was serving in the Civil War. I have information on both Leopold and Bertha's families in Germany as well as info on Martha (Paul's younger sister) and her descendants (I'm one of them). I saw your post while searching for info about the Gast Brewery. I'm Philip Melchor Schuchman(n), son of Philip Melchor Schuchmann and Pauline Elenore Jolliff. I had a great aunt I knew as Bell Schuchman, who may have been Blanche or her sister. I know that the Paul Volks family was also related to Bell. My father's Mother was Agnes Burnes Schuchman McCabe. He had a sister Imelda who married Paul Eugene Donnelly.
I have a stein given to Mrs. Alex Gast by (I was told) Kiser Willhelm. While the personalized inscreption was removed by my father just prior to WWII out of fear of persecution, the stein is in remarkable shape and some of the markings are still visable in the right light. I have very little knowledge of my family beyond a few generations. I'd be happy to send you photos (.jpegs) of the stein if you like.
