Since you have considerable data, you need to indicate where you have already looked. For example the following is from the LDS FamilySearch website. Do you have this?
=================
IGI Individual Record FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0
ELSPET GEORGINA FORBES
Birth: 16 MAY 1839 Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland
Father: GEORGE FORBES
Mother: ELSPET MURRAY
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record.
Batch No.: C119068 1836 - 1855 0991249 Film 6901058 Film
=================

Note that these data are recorded in LDS microfilm 0991249 that can be rented at your local LDS Family History Center. Many times there are additional information in the actual record.

This record is also in that microfilm.
==============
IGI Individual Record FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0
British Isles
GEORGE FORBES
Spouse: ELSPET MURRAY
Marriage: 01 MAR 1825 Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland
Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.
Batch No.: M119068 1820 - 1835 0991249 Film 6901059 Film
==============

The parents of George and Elspet and their birthplace may be in the actual record.

I would suggest that you also join the Aberdeenshire mail list. There are additional local (to Aberdeen) experts that frequent that list.
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/SCT/ABERDEEN.h...

In addition Aberdeen has an excellent Family History Society. They have additional resources. http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/index.htm
Forbes in Franklin County, VA

I am assisting a friend in finding info on her father's Forbes line which is from Franklin County, VA.

I searched the trees on Rootsweb World Connect. All of them, without exception, show that Robert P Forbes, who married Harriett Louise Wray, was a son of John R Forbes, who married Lydia Wright. They also show that John R was a son of John Forbes who married (1) Sarah Bernard, and (2) Agnes ________. Some of the trees have lists of children for John Forbes. The sparse documentation given on the trees indicates that Sarah Bernard died shortly after 1800 and John and Agnes married around then, but no evidence of this marriage is given. There is even one tree which assigns three children to this second marriage.

I had already done a lot of searching through Census online prior to looking at the trees so I had no immediate arguments against what the trees showed. Recently I started looking at original records for Franklin County.

The probate records I have found do NOT support the conclusions about John Forbes and his two wives. His will, dated 22 July 1832, and presented for probate and proved in court on 6 Aug 1832, shows something very different.

1. This gives a very narrow window for his death, between 22 July and 5 Aug of 1832. Dates given in the various trees, when a date was given at all, are much later than this.

2. He refers to "my beloved wife Sally" three times in the will, and also names her as an executrix of the will, along with John R Forbes. This is presumably the Sarah Bernard that he is supposed to have married, although I have yet to find proof of her maiden name. If this is the same Sarah (Sally), then she obviously did NOT die shortly after 1800.

3. So, where did the second wife Agnes, who is named in so many trees, come from??

A single reading of John Forbes' will provided me with the answer to that question. His will names the following legatees.

a. "My beloved wife Sally"
b. Daughter Agnes Forbes and her heirs forever
c. Daughter Sally Wray, Patsy Bradley, and Polly Lyon
d. Grandson Philip Forbes
e. Son John R Forbes
f. Son Peter B. Forbes
g. Son Thomas J Forbes
h. Heirs of my son William Forbes

4. Obviously Agnes Forbes is the daughter of John Forbes, NOT his second wife. Her estimated birth year of 1786-87 fits in very well with her being an older child of John and Sally Forbes. Whether Agnes never married or whether she married someone whose surname was Forbes is unknown at this time.

5. Since the will refers to "her heirs" [Agnes'] it seems entirely likely that the Otey Forbes found living with her in the 1850 Census in Franklin County is her own son. If Otey had truly been a child of John Forbes, then he should have been listed in the will, as he was certainly alive in 1832 when the will was written.

6. Philip Forbes is listed in some of the trees as being a child of John and Agnes. Well, he might still be a child of Agnes, but he is obviously a grandson of John Forbes.

Another document in the probate records gives further info about Sally Forbes. On 7 Jan 1850 John R Forbes submitted a record of the sale of the estate of Sally Forbes. In case there is still any doubt as to whether or not Sally survived her husband, John R makes reference in his final accounting in the probate files, at a still later date, to the proceeds from the sale of the personal estate of "Sally Forbes, the widow of John Forbes, deceased".

These two records show that Sally did indeed survive her husband, John Forbes, and probably did not die until late in 1849 and possibly even at the very beginning of January 1850. In other words, she just missed being on the 1850 Census.

So, where has everyone who submitted trees been getting their information?? Are they just passing around gedcom files, which are all incorrect?

Has no one ever looked at the original records from Franklin County? These probate records are easily available on microfilm through your nearest FHC.

It's time to stop perpetuating the myth that John Forbes had a wife named Agnes and put her in the tree where she belongs, as his daughter.

Has anyone got any reference as to the maiden name of John's wife, Sally?? Is it really Sarah Bernard?? Where did this come from??

I haven't even gone back any further than John Forbes yet. Who knows what errors I am going to find in lines further back.

Carol Sullivan
mcsullivan@juno.com

Any info would be appreciated!
My great-grandfather, Ira Tildon McIntire, married a Clara Jane Forbes of/at Corydon, PA in 1867. I am not sure of Clara's fathers or mothers names. I suspicion her fathers first name may have been Belvin as this was middle name they gave to my grandfather.
However, every census I have seen after her marriage, they list Clara's father as being born in Scotland.
Any insight into my "Forbes Family Mystery" would be great!
Thanks!

Re: FORBES, WILLIAM, born about 1751, WELLS, YORK, MAINE

I have William Forbes and wife Elizabeth in Nova Scotia, with daughter Charlotte, born 31 Aug 1799, died 10 Nov 1874 in Liverpool, Queens Co. Her death record shows her as born in Brooklyn to William and Elizabeth, with William being a farmer.
She married Thomas Eaton, a sea captain born in Liverpool, Lancs, England, 05 Dec 1823 in Liverpool, Queens Co. Their daughter Sarah married Edward Pierce and they went to California, where in 1880 guests in their home (per census)were Elizabeth Caroline Webb Bean (daughter of Elizabeth Forbes and George Webb) and her daughters.
This leads me to assume that Elizabeth Forbes was probably the daughter of "my" William and Elizabeth. You have in another post said that your William married Mary Maxwell, so I wonder if Elizabeth was a second wife. Do you have anything further on his marriages?
You also said that he was at Bunker Hill in the Revolutionary War.....I have found an Alexander who was there, but not William. However, William Forbes was granted 100 acres in Shelburn Co., NS in 1785 ("Loyalists and Land Settlements in Nova Scotia - Pub. 4) so he apparently was a loyalist, and could well have been a British soldier in that war. Perhaps Alexander was a brother, as there was one in NS at the appropriate time.
My son-in-law is descended from Thomas Eaton and Charlotte Forbes through their son Joseph, and I am trying to add details to the genealogy I have worked on for him.
I'd appreciate an e-mail with any helpful information you may have come across. Unfortunately the Nova Scotia site hasn't added any new records recently.

Margo Stapleton

Amos E Forbes, Sarah Jane McKinney

Kingfisher County
SKELETON Township 19 North, Range 5 WIM
Section 32:
FORBES Estate
N. HOPKINS
F. LUDWIG
J.W. STONEKING

It has been very hard to verify all the facts of this family and their ancestry. I know of at least two others that are researching this family. Here is what I believe, at this time, to be the most probable. For details, I can send you a pdf file.

Amos (b. 1854, IN or MI) was married to Sarah (b. 1858, IL) on Oct. 3, 1880 in Depue, IL. Here they had two sons before moving to Kansas. In 1885 the first of three children were born in Kansas. In late 1890, the first of two sons were born in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma. (A possible location of their estate is shown above.)

In 1893, it appears disaster strikes this poor family in a big way. A Typhoid Fever epidemic breaks out in the county. On March 3rd, Amos dies leaving Sarah two-months pregnant. Three-year old Robert dies on the same day as the baby, Carl is born - September 18. On October 6, Sarah dies, and little Carl only lives to March 16, 1894 (6 months old). The older children, still living at home, are sent to live with Sarah's Mother in Illinois. Amos, Sarah, and I presume the two little boys are buried in a little cemetery near Hennessey, Oklahoma.

Amos and Sarah are also my great grandparents, my Grandfather being Edward (Edwin) Leroy Forbes, the oldest child.

Forbis vs. Forbes as surname variants

Am not researching either Forbes or Forbis exactly, but as neighbors of my husband's ancestors in Richland and Ashland Counties, Ohio, they keep showing up and am corresponding with a descendant. So, I'm noticing that in some records, the surname is spelled Forbis, but later is Forbes. These are Scottish immigrants, and the surname there seems to be Forbes. So, folks might want to be alert to the possibility that immigrants to the US might have been heard, by someone else creating a record, as saying Forbis, when they themselves spelled their name as Forbes (assuming they were literate and the spelling was well established, neither of which I can say at this point.
The records in question, showing this family as Forbis, are an 1853 tax record for Butler Twp, Richland Co, Ohio. Section 7 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohrichla/TaxMapCD/Butler18...
and the 1850 census for Clear Creek, Ashland Co, Ohio, both showing the name as Forbis. Later this will be standardized as Forbes, including on gravestones and later census, platt maps and tax records.

On Ancestry.com on One World Tree, I read that the parents of William Henry Forbes, who married Mary Allis Roberts, were William Forbes and Mary Spinney. The parents of William Forbes, who married Mary Spinney, were Josiah ( a.k.a. James ) Forbes and Catherine Allen.

At the Nova Scotia Vital Statistics, there is a record of death for William Forbes in 1874 at age 85 yrs., and he was the son of James and Catherine Forbes, and he was born in ca. 1791, according to this record. Ancestry.com gave his birth year as 1792. His father, James or Josiah Forbes, was said to have been born in 1754 and he married Catherine Allen in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

According to the death record of William Forbes in 1874, the informant was his son, Ebenezer Forbes. On the marriage record for Ebenezer Forbes and Fanny Stephens, Ebenezer's parents were listed as William Forbes and Mary ( probably Mary Allis Forbes.

I am trying to research the Forbes line further back in time before Josiah ( a.k.a. James ) Forbes, who married Catherine Allen. Can anyone help?
Jean Mayo

AFN has this family as well as most researchers with her in the family. Cokayne's Peerage, as well as thepeerage.com state that William and Elizabeth did not have a child named Christian.
Forbes, Soldiers in Denmark 1600 - 1700

, James Forbes, or James Forbus in Denmark. He was born 1608 somewhere I Scotland, and came to Denmark as a sold soldier. He must have done good as he was given land at the Island “Lolland” about 1640 – 50. We think he was captured and sold as a soldier, may be a member of the “McKay Regiment”, that came from Holland and was hired by the Danish King. He died 1680 and was buried September 7 in the town, “Halsted” at Lolland.
Who is his parents?

I believe that the name “James” could be "John" as well, but I am not sure. We have tried hardly to find out what family he came from, but without success. Other families at Lolland that are of interest, as they are all ancestors to me, living at Lolland, is Mortimer that came from Dundee as merchandisers, Janet Small was the mother.
My Forbes research stops with Agnes Forbes who was born in 1802 and I haven't got much info on Agnes's brother Alexander Forbes was born 26.12.1799 in Kirkliston. There are a lot of Forbes trees on Ancestry however who hail through James Forbes and Agnes Spaldie. I have several Alexander's in the 18th Century - Alexander born 1731 in Ecclesmachan (he married Elizabeth (Bettie) Thompson, His father was Alexander Forbes born ??? who married a Katharin McKenzie. His father was Alexander Forbes born 31/8/1670 in Bo'ness to John Forbes and Isobell Mershall. There are heaps of Alexander Forbes, many from West Lothian but also many from Aberdeen
Not much help to you I'm afraid but if you search James Forbes and Agnes Spaldie you will find the Forbes line I'm on and you will see all the siblings which might lead you to your Alexander born in the 20th Century.

Good luck.

Regards Shelagh
