Does anyone have a connection or further information on my Fleet family? My Gt Gt Gt grandfather was Robert Fleet (a gentleman by profession??) who had a son called William George Fleet (my gt gt grandfather) William married Sarah Charles Strong on 2.12.1837 in Kennington, Surrey (it says on their marriage certificate that he was living in Norwood, Surrey at the time and his profession was a sailor). On the 1871 census Sarah is listed as a widow so I don't know when William died but they had several children including Emily (my gt grandmother born 7.1.1839), Oswald Charles b. 1844, Louisa Anne b. 1846, Rosina Phoebe b. 1850 and Fanny Isabella b. 1854 ish. All the children were born in Peckham, Surrey and the family were living there at the time of census. Emily later went on to marry John McLachlan in 1872. If anyone is connected to this family I would love to hear from you.
Carol

This may be a red herring, but I am researching a Fleet family, originating in Surrey. My subject became well-known Victorian actor Rutland Barrington (born George Rutland Barrington Fleet in 1853). Father was John George Fleet (born 1818 died 1902). Another brother was Admiral Fleet. Please contact me if further information required

Hi Richard

Thank you for your reply. Although it's been four years since my original posting I still haven't found out anything about Robert Fleet (William's father) and I didn't know he had a brother called Robert either!

To update my original message I now know that William George Fleet was a Draper, Tailor and Hatter (not a sailor) and was born in the City of London, Middlesex (according to the 1851 census) c1816. He died on the 23/1/1853 (age 36) of chronic alcoholism.

Any information you could give me regarding William's parents and siblings would be gratefully received.
Regards
Carol

Hi Jacquie, I am a Fleet decendant in Adelaide too! My line starts with Frederick Fleet born in Surrey, London and married Eliz Camp in England. His father was Robert Fleet and mother was Ann Elizabeth Kitton. Frederick and Eliz came to Adelaide in 1849. They settled in the Adelaide Hills and there are hundreds of us around. They had 11 children that I know of.

I do know that Frederick had a had at least 3 brothers called Robert 2 of which I presume died young. He also had a brother William George.

If there is a connection, or if you need further information, please contact me.

Bev.
