Have you used FamilySearch.org? That has a database of the census, 1880 US, & 1881 for Canada.

In order to help you, we need to know more details, especially the time line and the surname of each person.

Do you have any specific dates of birth, marriage, or death?

To identify a person positively, we need the maiden name of the wife.

It is also easier to read if you use standard capitalization and punctuation except to capitalize entirely the SURNAME, like that.

You could do the FamilyTree Y-DNA test. Go to FamilyTreeDNA.com. Find the Dunham site. Then find the price for the number of markers you would like. The 37-marker test should be sufficient, $156, or you could even test only 25. The two main lines that have surfaced are from Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth Colony and the descendants of Richard Singletary who used the name Dunham. It's interesting to see the various haplogroups for people with the same surname.

After going back to the 1880 census, I noticed that Frank Dunham has both of his parents listed as born in MA. I can't find any reference to either Martin Dunham or his wife Margaret Denner. It's possible that I have the names wrong. I can't think of a way of making sure without a birth certificate for Frank where both his parents names might be listed

Frank Dunham and Hannah Hayes seem to be as far back as I can go with any reliability. Beyond that, it seems a lost trail.

I just went back and checked the 1880 census and Martin Dunham, Frank's father was not from Ireland after all, but from MA. I was told by my sister, that she thought Martin was from Ireland, but she was clearly wrong. He married Margaret Denner from Ireland. I'll do some more research tonight to see if I can find him. He must have lived in or around Boston or on the South Shore somewhere. My Grandfather, William James Dunham, (Frank's son), was born in Plymouth in 1869, was married in Quincy in 1902 and died in 1935.

My dad used to tell me our roots were in Plymouth, but he grew up in Dorchester and Quincy. I need to find some reference to Martin to make the right links.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is my father William J. Dunham (1910-1977), he was living in Ohio when he died. That would be him on the 1920 census age 9, living with W. J. and Margaret (Souter). I missed that on the 1920 census.

I found Frank & Hannah and their children on the 1880 census. One of their children was William, my grandfather. I can't find any further references to their other children and have no idea what became of them or any children they may have eventually had.

As far as Martin Dunham goes, I only know he was born in Ireland and must have been in Boston at least as early as 1832, when his son Frank was born there. I didn't see him on the 1840 census and I haven't found any reference to him in Ireland or on other US Censuses or marriage or death certificates. The same is true for his wife Margaret Denner of Ireland.

Are you related in some way to this branch of the Dunham family?

MA: George, 9; Kate, 14; William, 11; Minnie, 8; & Frank, 6.

Pilot.familysearch.org has William J., 9, with W. J. & Margaret, Dorchester, Boston, MA, 1920.

Social Seurity Death Index doesn't have any William J. to fit, but it has a William (22 Nov. 1910, SSN issued Massachusetts - Jan. 1977, last res.
Martin Dunham, Frank Dunham, Hannah Hayes family search

I'm searching for information on the Martin Dunham line of Dunham's. He was married to Margaret Denner both from Ireland. They had a son Frank Dunham born in Boston, 1832, married to Hannah Elizabeth Hayes of Andover, MA, born in 1840. Their son William James Dunham is my grandfather born in 1869. Frank & Hannah had four other children, George, Kate, Minnie & Frank Dunham.

My grandfather William James Dunham married Margaret C. Souter in 1902. She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1881. William & Margaret had 2 children William James Dunham (my father), and Margaret (Peg) Dunham. Margaret Souter's parents were, Alexander Souter and Margaret Smith, both presumably from Scotland.

Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated.
Dunham and the Revolutionary War. I would love to know more about him though. What do you know about him?

Also, could you fill me in on your Lewis and Admiral Dunham relatives.
Thanks. I had a few questions. Did you mean they moved to Washington County, MO?

What company was A.R. Dunham in during the War? Confederate or Union?

I think it is interesting about the reference to Henry H. Dunham serving in the Revolutionary War. I have found that it is almost always a true story passed down from generation to generation. The facts seemed to get skewed sometimes, but I bet he was a soldier. I have seen reference that he was born in England also. Have you seen that? What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks so much for your reply. You have done a lot more research than I have. I had seen the Henry H. Dunham being born in England and the Elizabeth Medlin being born in Scotland and was a bit puzzled by it. Could you fill be in on Elizabeth Medlin's family being traced back to Jamestown? That sounds very interesting. You referred to a Joseph Dunham Sr. site and a Medlin site, could you direct me to those please?

I know that my Dunhams moved from Tennessee to Alabama to Missouri. But I also don't know which of the two Dunham's from Beulah, MO were in the Confederate units and captured and died as POW's. What were their names? Do you know any more about them? That sounds like an interesting story too.

Both sets of my grandparents lived in Licking, MO. I used to go visit there often. I'm the only one who seems to be working on the family tree in my immediate family at the moment, so I really appreciate all your help and sharing of information.

I really appreciate your help.
I'm descended from Medlin Johnson Dunham, Richard Henegar Dunham 1828-1901 (Edgar Springs Cemetery), Issac Amanuel Dunham1854-1931 (Anutt Cemetery), and Dollie Dunham 1900 - 1992 (Anutt Cemetery). I was in Licking last summer to visit an aunt who still lives there.

My grandparents Fountain William Carney and Dollie Dunham Carney bought a white stucco house on Main Street in Licking right across from the Baptist Church in 1943 or so. It used to be the Methodist parsonage many years ago. Fount died in 1943. Dollie lived there until 1991.

My other grandparents were Irvin and Juanita Mitchell. They had a farm out on the highway to Rolla just outside of town, and in 1957 moved to town. They had the rock house behind the REA until 1970. Then they built a red brick house on the road to Raymondville just inside the city limits I think. Irvin was a rural mail carrier for 50 years. Another interesting fact- his mother was Cora MARR 1881-1945. Her father was Evan MARR 1855-1927 who is buried at Beulah!!! Can you tell me which Marr your first wife was related to? I have quite a bit on the Marr side. Small world.

Yes, I have read the book. I found it last year in a used books site. Joel Sherrill Marr who married Polly Howell is who the book is written about. Joel was a brother to my great great grandfather Evan Nelson Marr.

The earliest Marr I have is James Allen Marr b. 1817 in Bedford County, TN. He came to Licking, MO area with the slaves. I don't know any earlier than that, sorry. It's interesting that Mrs. Dean knew my grandparents, but it is a very small town!

Naval Schoolmaster - George F. Dunham - 1831

Dear friends

I have recently found in Google Books, on the Reports of Committees of The House of Representatives, 1831, reference to a George F. Dunham. That man is on a list of persons employed in the Naval Service of the United States. He is said to be a schoolmaster on the sloop Lexington. The link is:

http://books.google.com.br/books?id=3qEFAAAAQAAJ&pg=RA10...

My ancestor George Felix Dunham declared himself Navy Officer to the Rio de Janeiro police register of foreigners in 1832. So it seem possible that he could be the naval schoolmaster “George F. Dunham” of 1831.

George Felix Dunham was an American citizen born in France about 1795, son of George Dunham, of Tisbury, Dukes (Martha’s Vineyard), Ma, USA and Eugenia Ducameron. He married Angelica Gertrudes de Jesus in Salvador, Brazil, on January 10, 1827. They have had 5 sons and 2 daughters, the ancestors of most (or may be all) Dunhams now living in Brazil. He died in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1861.

A naval schoolmaster in the early 19th century, as I tried to find, was someone that taught midshipmen mathematics, navigation, and sailing lore and was usually a civilian. That is a profile compatible with George Felix Dunham, as his ancestors in Martha’s Vineyard were involved with sea activities.

Would it be possible to find in the US Navy archives information about those schoolmasters?

Best regards

Geraldo P. Caldas
Florianopolis, SC, Brazil
I have a John Dunham as the father of my great grandmother, Margaret Pearl Dunham-Black. Margaret married Harry Myron Black of Connellsville, PA. but later moved to Ohio. My grandmother, Olive Pearl Black, was born within that union. She also had two or three older brothers and a sister. Her mother, Margaret, died at the age of 22 in Vermillion, Ohio (I have her death certificate). The father later remarried. So, I am hoping that you are talking about John Sr. which would add another branch to this nut tree of mine. I will check it out and if any of this comes to anything I'll get back with you. Then you can add another line in there.

I am searching for information concerning the parents and family origins of Eleazer Thomas Dunham, who was born on June 30, 1887 in Middleboro, MA. Eleazer was adopted by George E. Marquit. He married Helena Bentley, who was born in 1893 in Rhode Island. They had son, George Eleazer Marquit, who was born in 1919 in Rhode Island.

It is believed that the parents of Eleazer Thomas Dunham were Edward F. Dunham ( born in Michigan ) and Bessie A. Hazlet ( born in New Brunswick, Canada ). Any information would be very much appreciated.
Jean Mayo

No, I think this is a different William Bell Dunham. My Dunham family would be in Pushmataha Co. He was my fathers brother and probably born around 1910-12. He was the son of Thomas Jefferson Dunham and Emma Elizabeth (Sutton)Dunham. William Bell, if I remember correctly was married to a lady named "Oretha".

Census of 1880 says Charles was born in Ohio and his father in New Jersey.]

Rhea MELKE (10 Jan. 1895, Dayton, OH - 24 Dec. 1948, Dayton, OH) widow of Charles, daughter of Hiram DUNHAM, b. Cincinnati, & Kathryn STOCKERT, b. Dayton. [Kathryn does not fit the census data and death certificate, where Hiram's wife was Anna.]

In 1880, Milford, Clermont Co., OH, DUNHAM:
Charles, 41, OH NJ OH, cooper
Wf. Elizabeth, 41, NJ NJ NJ
Ch. b. OH: Hiram G., 15; Charles T., 13; Josiah, 10; Elva E., 7 (female); Jenny F., 5; Earl, 2.

In 1900, Hiiram G. had been married eight years, and he & wf. Anna had Anna R., 4, b. Jan. 1896; & Hiram G., 1, b. June 1898. In 1910, Hiram G. & Hanah [Anna?] had Rhea, 14, Hiram, 11, & Joseph, 2.

In Dayton, OH, 1920, MELKE, Charles, 25, OH OH IRL; Anna R., 22, OH OH OH; son James, six months. Rita MELKE was 9 in 1930, Montgomery Co., OH.

I don't know how to reconcile the various discrepancies. Anna Rhea or Rhea Anna DUNHAM was probably born in Jan. 1896, since they were more likely to have her age correct when she was only four instead of later. She was probably 24 instead of 22 in 1920.

Do you have any living male relatives with the surname DUNHAM? A DNA test might help.

MT1975: Have you tried to get a death certificate for Mary E. BEACH (1863 - 1930, bu. Akron, IA)? Death records in Iowa are supposedly complete from 1905 on and should name Mary's parents.

Re: Lindsey W. Dunham 1850's NY

Lindsey Dunham, Spencer Dunham and Eli Dunham were all listed as early settlers of Manitowoc County. Spencer & Eli's Mother was Mrs. Caroline Dunham, she married John Warfield on 1 Oct 1842 in Hopewell, Ontario, New York.

John was previously married in New York and his wife first wife Caroline died on 23 Jan 1831. He had three children from his first marriage. Caroline Dunham Warfield had 2 children that I know of. The combined Warfield-Dunham families moved to Mukwanago, Waukesha County, WI. In Wisconsin this family added 3 more children to the family, with the first born in Wisconsin in Feb 1847.

Spencer and Eli Dunham are living in the Warfield household in the 1850 census in Mukwanago. Spencer was born Jan 1834 in New York. Eli was born 1837 in New York.

In 1861 Spencer was living in Pierce, Kewaunee, WI; was married to Sarah Jane Unknown and had twin daughters born 4 May 1861. His wife Sarah Jane died on 16 July 1861 in Pierce. His twin daughters followed in Oct & Dec 1861. He remarried in 1861 Almira Reynolds and had 5 children with her. They settled in Humboldt Brown WI and can be found there in the 1870 census. Eli Dunham in that census was living right next door.

Eli Dunham married Mary unknown in Manitowoc County, WI on 18 Aug 1867. They had 2 children that I could find. Eli disappears after 1870 and I could find no trace of him. I did however find his daughter Daisy Dunham living with Spencer Dunham and daughter Jenny Dunham in the 1900 census in Humboldt, Brown, WI.

In 1870 Cato, Manitowoc census your Alanson Hickok was in household 168. My John & Caroline Dunham Warfield were in household 170. In household #177 is Luther & Mary Warfield Wicker, John Warfield's daughter. Sarah Dunham in Alanson's household was born 3 years earlier than my Caroline Dunham Warfield. I know that your Alanson Dunham and his parents William and Sarah Metcaff Dunham lived in New York in 1850 census in Monroe County. Caroline Dunham Warfield came from Ontario County right next door.

Is it possible that your Sarah Metcaff Dunham and my Caroline Dunham Warfield both married Dunham's from the same family in New York? I just find it too coincidental that Lindsey, Spencer and Eli Dunham were all in Manitowoc County in the 1850's, That John & Caroline Dunham Warfield moved right next door to Sarah Metcaff Dunham leaving John's Warfield brother's in Mukwanago.

Further coincidence occurs in the Cato, Manitowoc 1860 census. Your William & Sarah Metcaff Dunham are listed in household 836. In household 838 Luther & Mary Warfield Wicker. Mary is the oldest daughter of John Warfield. Alanson Hickok is in household 832.

Another coincidence is that in Mill Center Protestant Methodist Cemetery your Lindsey W. Dunham is buried in Old section NE-7. My Edna Warfield Branch Davis, another of John Warfield's daughters is buried in Old section NE-6.
Since Lindsey died in Oconto County I find it very interesting that he and family are buried so near another member of my Warfield/Dunham family in another county.

There are just too many coincidences of Lindsey and Sarah Metcaff Dunham and my Dunham Warfield's being so close to each other so often. There has to be a major connection that neither of us has made yet. Perhaps it goes back to New York. I have never been able to find Caroline Dunham's first husbands name. He either died or they were divorced.
