Hi there,

Well, I have been trying to connect my `Woods` family back to Du Bois! My Woods family were in the south of Ireland, nr Dundalk city. The strory goes that my Woods family were decended from French noble family, maybe Brittany or Normandy! They probably escaped from France du to religious persecution, way way back. I am told that they would have changed their name to Woods, the meaning of du Bois meaning wood.
Julie Perry (woods) somerset England.

Dubois / Woods - Family Mystery

Anyone have info on the following Dubois/Woods prior to 1911 (sorry for the length):
Mary (everyone called her Stella) was the oldest and then there was Albert, Blanche (married Lucien Pilon, Syracuse, N.Y later Arizona), Loretta (married Joseph Quinn, Cardinal), and Maurice (married Anita Kenville). The obit of Joseph Dubois (Woods) gives his children's names as Dubois with Woods in brackets. I believe my grandmother had a hard time getting a birth certificate for when she reached pension time because of the name issue. The obituary I have is hard to read - here's some details from it: J. Dubois (Woods), died suddenly of a stroke; he stayed at his home for a long time at 16 Maple Ave. He died on a Sunday at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. It says he "was better known in Cornwall as Joseph Woods", born in Longueil, Quebec 77 yrs ago - I think the date of his death is Aug. 1956 or 57. It also says he is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dubois (my mom always thought he was an orphan and his wedding certificate gave different names). The obit also says he "was the last survivor of his original family". The obit goes on to say that he came to Cornwall "50 yrs ago".
Rose Delima Boyer was only married once but Joseph's marriage to Delima was his second. This was not generally known in the family until Auntie Anita, Joseph's son Maurice's wife, let it out. No one knows who she was or where she was from. A whole chunk of Joseph's life is missing for us - from birth until the 1911 Census in Cornwall and his ensuing marriage to Delima Boyer. On his marriage licence, Joseph states his parents as Magloire Woods (deceased) and Genvieve Battineau (deceased). He is a man of mystery and I would love help solving this puzzle!
His wife was Elizabeth Brown who was born 26 Jan 1832 in Bethel NY and died 03 Feb 1917.

Elizabeth's parents were Samuel Brown (d. 1852) and Agnes Du Bois (d. 1877).
I am also related to the DuBois' from New Paltz. According to family history sent to me by my great aunt, my line was of the nobility in france until one of my ancesters Christian turned protistant, he was stripped of his nobility. My line left france for new york where they helped found New Paltz. I have to find the information again, it may be helpful as most of those names sound familiar..

Thank you for the information.
Our line apparently originates from what is today Belgium and according to Belgian historians, is not related to the French one. It became part of the nobility in 1672 under the Spanish regime and still is. None of its members, as far as is known, ever converted as protestants. And I am the first one having emigrated to the USA.
But I must confess that there are quite a few coincidences in the history of both.

After researching in Dutch birth/marriage archives in Amsterdam I found out that my forefather Jaques du Bois came from Elbing / Elblag. He was married to Johanna Sophia Wilson.
He had at least one son named Charles Henri du Bois, born around 1780 in Elbing and moved to Amsterdam around 1800.
This summer I am planning a trip to Elblag, but If anymore has more information about this family, please let me know.
If it can help anyone, there was a lot of traffic between the harbours of Elblag, Amsterdam, Bordeaux and Cadiz (France)
Jacques: Are you the guy who sent me an e-mail with an AOL address. If so, let me know, because my attempted reply was bounced back to me as a nonexistant address. Have you contacted your relatives in Brussels? Do you know about Kino's personal history in Canada? There is to me some mystery why Kino came to northern Manitoba and did not move back to Belgium. You obviously read my Addendum web page on the issue, unless somebody else spoofed your address! I have talked to people who knew Kino but I never met him myself. He was truly a character in local history.
-David Westfall
westfall@westman.wave.ca or westfalld@brandonu.ca

Thank you for your comments. The info you gave me corresponds to what I already had, but it appears that my family, despite the similarity of first names, does not have the same origin. A book published 2 years ago by l'Association Royale, Office Généalogique et Héraldique de Belgique, states that the belief of identical origin is erroneous. This book deals with the 3 noble branches of my family, which may be traced in the early 1500's in the Flemish part of what is presently Belgium. At that time the name was Van Den Bosch ( Du Bois in French, or Of the Wood in English ), soon translated into French Du Bois, and then du Bois.
Thanks again for your kind attention.

They also had a son Jacques born 27 October 1628 in Artois, France. Could this be the connection you are looking for. They were both members of the Walloon Church. Louis married Catherine Blanchan on 10 October 1655 in Mennheim, Germany and Jacques married Pierrone Bentyn on 25 April 1663. I have more information on them if these are the ones you are looking for.

Roots of the du Bois family

My family originates from the southern Flanders, Belgium, which centuries ago belonged to France. We can backtrack the origin to approx. 1520. I have found two brothers du Bois, Jacques and Louis, born in 1626 and 1627 in Wicres, County of Artois, France, and their father Chrétien. The brothers, Huguenots, emigrated to Ulster, New York.
Wicres is located in what is still today France, but not very far from where my ancesters originate. I am trying to find out if these two branches were at one point related.
Can anybody help ?
Jacqueline, your previous post was moved to the Dubois message board since that is how you spell the name. This is the Du Bois message board with a space between the u and B. I have changed the spelling in the subject line on this board to meet board specs but you might want to keep track of both posts. You can find both of them by clicking on your name next to where is says author: or by:
Hope you find what you need.

My brother and I are descendents of Louis DuBois through his son Abraham and grandson Abraham who moved to Somerset County, NJ. My brother has recently been diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) which is a very rare form of kidney disease. In plain talk his kidneys are like a sieve where the holes are now plugged up. He will be beginning dialysis in a few months and will eventually need a transplant. I was wondering if any other DuBois descendents have this form of disease or something similar. I recently came across a descendent from the unproven ancestry line of Chretien who died of the same disease in 2004.
Jacqueline Wells Lubinski
I think that just about every noble family in Western Europe claims Charlemagne (or Karl der Grosse) among their many ancestors. Given the time that has passed and the limited size of the breeding pool (don't marry below your station), they are probably right whether or not it is the particular path they claim. Since there was a lot of "give the folks what they are paying for" research done by supposed genealogists, I am skeptical of any specific claim that that isn't backed up by more than one source.

I only recently located my DuBois family line. I had always wondered about my great grandfather's middle name. I decided to once more look at his line and discovered that the line went back to Seigneur de Beaufermez on the DuBois line. I had heard that someone on this site on another was able to research back to 815 AD. I can tell you that if Peter Dubois is in your line, he had served in the Revolutionary War as a lieutenant to George Washington, and also help to start a town in New Jersey.

A book has been written and will be published very shortly by the Office Généalogique et Héraldique de Belgique about the du Bois family. It appears from it that the roots of the Belgian du Bois do not originate from France, nor have any connection with later generations of du Bois, either in France or in the USA as first thought. Indeed " our " du Bois came from what is today Belgium and their original name was Flemish ( van den Bosch ), later translated in French into " du Bois ".
Thanks to all who have been responding to my original question.

From an aunt I have learned that my family, the Dobbie's were originally from France with the name duBois. One ancestor was with the Norman army of 1066 AD and settled in England. Another ancestor (my branch) fled France with the Hugenots in the 1700's and settled in the North of England and the border area of Scotland. I'm searching for any pertinent information for either branch.
I know that the duBois name was 'Anglicized'
to its present DOBBIE in the distant past, but I haven't any later information further back than my Grandfather, William Dobbie from Dalkeith/Sandbach area

I'm not sure when the one I have was created, but the paper that came with it was dated in the 1960's and stated that the artist studied with Chagall in France and then moved to Canada, and after an illness had exhibited in California and Mexico. It's a beautiful, impressionist style painting.

If you email me, I can send you a picture.

Hi Marty -

Nice to hear from a first cousin a few times removed.

Unfortunately Mary Ann Kelly married Uriah DuBois in 1847, so she does not appear with her family in the 1850 census. If she did, the mystery would be solved. There are quite a number of Kellys in Tompkins County in relatively close proximity to where the DuBois family resided. I have looked at the 1840 census records to see which Kelly families had a female or females in the age range for Mary Ann. I also keep hoping to find a Kelly will or probate file where Mary Ann is listed as an heir. What I have NOT done is devote all of my genealogical efforts towards this one family and examined every piece of evidence available for the area. More results would likely be forthcoming with this approach.

Parents in the time frame of Uriah and Mary Ann tended to name their offspring after their own parents and siblings. Uriah and his first wife named their first son Henry after Uriah's father. Mary Ann named her first son James Monroe. No James in the DuBois line. Perhaps her father was James. Her first daughter was Susan if I remember correctly. These "may" be clues. I have visited their graves in Waterloo, Iowa, and have a photo of their stone.

I have a great deal of data on our DuBois family. They are a fascinating group. Once you find the names of his parents you can go to www.familysearch.org and look up the 1881 census for Canada and hopefully find the parents there. My pepere was Joseph DuBois and was born in Hemmingford PQ in 1870. His family came to western MA to work in the cotton mills. Half his family stayed in MA while the other half returned to the area around St-Jean. I have been lucky searching the family back to France. Found that the original settler from France had the last name of Rondel. Bev

Hi Cathy,

My DuBois were never in Tennessee; however, other descendents of the original immigrants scattered over the country. The original spelling in France was duBois - pronounced doo-bwah'. Bois in French is Woods - they were "of the woods" in the very early days. It is a very old name in France.

Good luck with your research,
Kay Fordham

Anna du Bois / Jacob Heydenrych France/Holland/South Africa

I have an Anna Catherina du Bois born France about 1850? married Jacob Frederick Constant Heydenrych born in Holland - also I would guess about 1850. They moved to South Africa and had ten children there. I am looking for any information on these two and where they link into the du Bois and Heydenrych family trees. Can anyone out there help?
